Sri Lanka Tri-Series 2009
Samaraweera recalled in Sri Lanka squad

Thilan Samaraweera waits on the ball

Thilan Samaraweera has been recalled to Sri Lanka's one-day squad for the four match
Tri-series involving New Zealand and India while Chaminda Vaas is overlooked.

Samaraweera, 32, played his last ODI in 2005 but targetted a return to the
limited-overs frame during an excellent run of form in Tests earlier this year. Vaas
had announced his retirement from Test cricket before the final match against
Pakistan, citing his desire to continue until the 2011 World Cup, but his
non-selection leaves a question mark over his future. Vaas managed just one wicket
in the SSC Test and was dropped last year from Sri Lanka's Twenty20 squad.

The opener Upul Tharanga takes up a top-order batting slot with Tillakaratne
Dilshan, who sustained injuries to the finger and head in the third Test in Colombo,
ruled out. Chamara Kapugedera has been included after being overlooked for the ICC
World Twenty20.

Sri Lanka's bowling is in sound health. While the focus has been on the return of
Murali and Malinga their seamers, especially Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara,
have performed consistently. Bandara makes a return to the ODI side having played
his last game in 2007.

The series begins in Colombo on September 8.

Sri Lanka squad: Kumar Sangakkara (c/wk), Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya,
Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Nuwan
Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Thilina Kandamby, Malinga Bandara, Thilan
Thushara Isuru Udana, Upul Tharanga.

Vaas and Dilshan could be missed but I'm sure their replacements can do just as well as they would of done.

Great presentation and the writing is very good, Shan.

Dravid cuts for four against New Zealand

The Indian selectors have decided to recall Rahul Dravid to India's one-day squad
for the the four match tri-series in Sri Lanka and also the Champions Trophy in
South Africa.

Dravid returns to the one-day frame after 2 years. Dravid last played a one-day
international match for India back in October 2007 against Australia in Nagpur. His
Twenty20 form during the Indian Premier League in South Africa and his experience
has led to his inclusion in the squad.

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina who missed the four match one-day
series in West Indies due to injuries have all returned to the squad while spearhead
bowler Zaheer Khan has failed to prove his fitness and will miss the Champions
Trophy.

Zaheer Khan undergone a major shoulder surgery in South Africa last month and is
ruled out of the four match tri-series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy. The
Mumbai bowler could miss seven match home ODI series against Australia in
November-December if the recovery doesn't go according to plan.

Kings XI Punjab's left arm fast bowler Irfan Pathan who was left out of the ODI
Series in West Indies comes back in as a replacement for the injured Zaheer Khan,
while Abhishek Nayar who played just one match in the West Indies is a surprise
selection.

India face Sri Lanka on September 10th in first match of the Mobiltel Tri-Series.

Squad: M S Dhoni(C), Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar,
Abhishek Nayar, Ashish Nehra, Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh
Raina, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh.

Mobiltel Tri-Series 2009, 1st ODI: Sri Lanka v New Zealand at Colombo, Sept 8, 2009
cricinfo2.png

Good afternoon and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first match of the Mobitel
Tri-Series 2009 between the host Sri Lanka and New Zealand live from the Premadasa stadium
in Colombo. Rohan Mahesh here, joined by Anil Shah from Mumbai. So with out wasting any
more time lest see the pitch report.

Pitch:- The pitch is looking very good. Its the same pitch which was used for the last ODI
match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The pitch is very dry and there will be even bounce
throughout the game. The ball will swing around for the first hour or so but afterwards it
will come nicely on the bat. Captain winning the toss should bat first on such a wicket.

Toss:- Sangakkara ficks the coin, Vettori calls heads and it's a tail - and the hosts Sri
Lanka have decided to bat first. "Looks like a good batting wicket to me," says the Lankan
skipper. Samaraweera, Murali and Malinga in for Kapugedera, Prasad and Bandara.

Vincent and Bond return for the Kiwis, while Patel comes in for Mills. No O'Brien and
Guptill who played in the test matches. "We've to do our basics well," says Kiwis skipper
Vettori.

Sri Lanka:- Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Sangakkara*+, Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Kandamby,
Mathews, Kulasekera, Mendis, Muralitharan, Malinga.

New Zealand:- Vincent, McCullum+, Ryder, Taylor, Broom, Elliot, Oram, Vettori*, Franklin,
Bond, Patel.

Here come Jayasuriya and Tharanga behind the two umpires and the the Kiwis. Jayasuriya
will be taking strike as he is scrathing out his guard, and it eventually finishes. It'll
be Shane Bond to take the new ball along with James Franklin from the other end.

Reading the information from the pitch I feel that this is a batsmen's track as swing will only be temporary. That said, I feel chasing a total under lights in Sri Lanka is a difficult ask. If Sri Lanka get 270+ then they are definatly the favourites to win.

Its nice to see Shane Bond return for the Kiwis as he will be the spearhead of the attack. To be honest I am not that keen on Vincent's inclusion as players like Martin Guptill have to sacrifice their place in the squad. On a whole my money is on a Sri Lankan win.

Fantastic works Shantanu. Keep up the great works.

Bond get rids of Jayasuriya early

2wbw60h.jpg

Shane Bond and New Zealand celebrate getting rid of Jayasuriya.

0.1, Bond to Jayasuriya, FOUR, shot! Lands on the half volley outside off and he gets
his bat nicely behind the ball before pushing it elegantly past the covers

0.2, Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, close call! Comes back in off the seam and Jayasuriya
is trapped at the crease as he tries to work it to the on side, he's hit above the knee
roll almost adjacent to the leg stump, that looked very close and Ashoka de Silva
hesitates but says not out.

0.3, Bond to Jayasuirya, OUT, that's an excellent yorker, swinging in late and
Jayausriya tries to squirt it out but the ball catches the underedge and clips the top
of the off stump.
Sanath Jayasuriya b Bond 4 (3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 133.30

0.4, Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, angles it on middle and leg and he works it past
mid-on.

0.5, Bond to Tharanga, no run, comes in and he taps it to the on side .

0.6, Bond to Tharanga, no run, fullish in length outside off and pushed to the off
side.

Sri Lanka 5/1(RR 5.00), End of over 1
K Sangakkara 1*(1b) - S Bond 1-0-5-1
U Tharanga 0*(2b)

1.1, Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, fishes at it outside the off stump, the ball
leaves the left hander.

1.2, Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, gets behind the line and pushes it away firmly
towards the covers.

1.3, Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, plays a touch away from the body and mistimes the
drive back to the bowler.

1.4, Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, keeps it on the stumps and he defends it back to
the bowler.

1.5, Franklin to Sangkkara, 1 run, angles it on middle and leg and he gets an inside
edge to the on side.

1.6, Franklin to Tharanga, no run, gets a good stride forward and drives to the covers,
tells his partner to stay put.

Sri Lanka 6/1(RR 3.00), End of over 2
K Sangakkara 2*(6b) - S Bond 1-0-5-1
U Tharanga 0*(3b) - J Franklin 1-0-1-0

2.1, Bond to Sangakkara, no run, enjoys a wild swish outside the off stump and the ball
creeps under his bat.

2.2, Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, angles it on middle and leg and he gets an inside edge
to the on side.

2.3, Bond to Tharanga, 1 run, really good effort by Ryder at backward point, flings
himself to his left and saves it one-handed, Tharanga tries to angle it away for a
single.

2.4, Bond to Sangakkara, no run, gets across his stumps and taps it to the off side.

2.5, Bond to Sangakkara, FOUR, almost perfectly bisects the gap between the keeper and
first slip, Bond drops it a fraction shorter outside off, Sangakkara tries to punch it
through the off side and the thick edge flies past McCullum who falls to his right,
Vincent was a little too wide at slip and he hardly moved.

2.6, Bond to Sangakkara, FOUR, even better! This one just rocketed off the bat, it was
a half volley outside off asking to be hit and both the mid-off and cover fielders
could barely react as the ball sped away, driven firmly off the front foot.

Sri Lanka 16/1(RR 5.30), End of over 3
K Sangakkara 11*(11b 2x4) - S Bond 2-0-15-1
U Tharanga 1*(4b) - J Franklin 1-0-1-0

3.1, Franklin to Tharanga, no run, bangs it on a good length and forces him to fend it
to the on side.

3.2, Franklin to Tharanga, no run, angles it on middle and leg and he works it just
wide of mid-on.

3.3, Franklin to Tharanga, 1 run, full outside off and jammed hard towards cover but
the fielder at short cover gets a hand to it.

3.4, Franklin to Sangakkara, 1 run, takes a steps down the pitch and tries to flat bat
it to the on side but he mistimes the shot to mid-on.

3.5, Franklin to Tharanga, no run, fires it on the blockhole outside off and dug out to
the off side.

3.6, Franklin to Tharanga, no run, another fast inswinging yorker and Tharanga watches
it all the way through, squeezes it out to the off side.

Sri Lanka 18/1(RR 4.50), End of over 4
K Sangakkara 12*(12b 2x4) - S Bond 2-0-15-1
U Tharanga 2*(9b) - J Franklin 2-0-3-0

4.1, Bond to Sangakkara, 3 runs, starts off by firing it on the blockhole and
Sangakkara does well to angle his bat and maneuver it between point and cover.

4.2, Bond to Tharanga, no run, full outside off and driven to mid-off.

4.3, Bond to Tharanga, 1 run, change of pace and it allows him time to angle it away
down to third man.

4.4, Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, hits it to the on side for a single.

4.5, Bond to Tharanga, 1 run, angles it on middle and leg stump and worked towards
midwicket.

4.6, Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, pushed away to the on side.

Sri Lanka 25/1(RR 5.00), End of over 5
K Sangakkara 17*(15b 2x4) - S Bond 3-0-22-1
U Tharanga 4*(12b) - J Franklin 2-0-3-0

haha, Bond is always classic. But Sri Lankans have strong batting and will be strong enough in bowling too. So the contest is never going to be over till 75 overs atleast. :D If Bond can take another couple of break throughs in another 10 overs, Kiwis are going to top the session!
