Virtual clean chit to Srinivasan-Cricket-Sports-TIMESNOW.tv - Latest Breaking News, Big News Stories, News Videos

It seems all the fuss was for nothing, as its said that N Srinivasan (Former BCCI Chief, and present ICC Chairman) is going to get a clean chit from the Panel formed to look into the IPL fixing probe. Srinivasan was neither guilty of asking CSK players (of whose he is the Chairman) to fix matches, nor did he at any time try and hamper investigations against his Son in Law who is one of the chief accused.

Mudgal Committee, which is led by a former Judge of impeccable integrity, also is likely to conclude that the authorities investigating the fixing, initially deliberately let the media get the impression that Srinivasan was trying to cause a hinderance in the investigations.

Srinivasan was vilified by both the Indian media, and fans (Booed by the crowd as last years' IPL final presentation), and it seems that Srinivasan, who always maintained he did nothing wrong, was speaking the truth.

Even Meiyappan is likely to go scot free. There is said to be no evidence to suggest that Meiyappan was involved in match fixing. It was initially reported that ICC ACU had told BCCI about Meiyappan's involvement in fixing, but the committee has found nothing on record to show that there was ever any such communication between the ICC and BCCI. Also there is no evidence to suggest that there was ever any meeting involving Meiyappan over dinner, to discuss fixing.

Unsurprisingly the rather mooted reports of MSD also having been involved, owing to the fact that he is CSK Skipper, a team with which Meiyyappan was involved, have been proven to be untrue. There is no mention of MSD on any of the tapped conversation of bookies, nor is his voice heard on any of the tapes. Although some verification remains, and the committee is waiting for the players to return from England to record their statements, before submitting the final reports.

Even Raj Kundra (co-owner of Rajasthan Royals) has been found not guilty of fixing, but he may be further probed for betting. Incidentally Betting in India is barred, but not so in England where Kundra lives. Owing to this there could be some confusion and even though Kundra may have been involved in betting in England, he would have still not broken any laws in India.

Final report is likely to be submitted in a few months, and while the fate of the three Rajasthan Royal cricketers is unknown right now, but if the preliminary reports are correct then it will just highlight the perils of media trial.

The point though remains that a media trial is very misleading and after the way the Indian media went after Srinivasan and Meiyyapan, they did more than enough to virtually pronounce them both guilty.
