So that will be it as far as the group stages are concerned. We're into the playoffs now with the six remaining teams to battle it out for glory. Bangalore are the only side who've failed to retain their place in the playoffs off the 6 teams that made it last season. Johannesburg replace them and are finally back into the playoffs after two bad seasons - back in some style, mind you! Having been eliminated in their first preseason game at the Shield, they've since then looked a brutal side - both on paper and performance - made a mockery out of Melbourne during the warmups, before owning each and every opposition they versed in the group stages. Definitely go into the major semifinal as 'favorites' to claim the trophy.
Perth Pirates achieved their milestone 50th victory en route to the place where they've always belonged to - the playoffs. Stunning consistency from both the team and their manager ranks them as the top side/manager in the championship's history by a country mile. Perth Pirates's journey in the LMS thus far:
S1 - 3rd
S2 - 4th
S3 - 3rd
S4 - 6th
S5 - 2nd
S6 - 3rd
*S7 - Major semifinal (meaning a 3rd place finish is guaranteed at a minimum)
The question is, 'can they finally go all the way?'
Mumbai, Melbourne and Liverpool have fared reasonably well to be in the playoffs. Never did they look like being eliminated, nor did they look like world beaters. Nevertheless, whatever they input starting from the playoffs is what counts. Special mention to Swirler for his remarkable success ever since temporarily taking over Liverpool's helms at the halfway stage. Made some incredibly good trades, and success followed him immediately and deservingly too.
Meanwhile, the heart goes out to Adelaide and Auckland for a moment. They were coasting along in the top half of the table midway through the season, only for the winter break to do some serious damage on their title hopes - Auckland in special lost all their matches after the winter break, and guess who benefited there? Yes, the defending champions - Manchester Moonbeams made the most of Auckland's lapse and won five matches on the trot to blast their way into the playoffs! They were down and out after the first half of the season with just 1 win and 4 losses, before producing this sort of substance to head into the playoffs. Champion stuff!
Delhi and Cape Town were merely a shadow of their glorious past - never ever hit top form. Bangalore more or less fall into this category, except that they're more or less new to this league with only a couple of seasons under their belt.
Finally, one can but feel sorry for the Wellington Brawlers. Defeat after defeat, starting from the penultimate game of the previous season to the very end of this season. #Sadface
