Your Cricket Lost Technique...

When I try soft hand I miss time it, or I get no power at all. When I grip it hard, I am early on my shots. Batting is a bitch!

Are you keeping a loose bottom hand. And dont pushe when you are defending. Let the ball come to you bat with a very loose bottom hand. Most of the time ball would drop dead near your bat and edges wont fly too:happy

Are you keeping a loose bottom hand.

Jeez you give some rubbish advice, he has already said he grips the bat very tight with his bottom hand and that is the way he plays, he knows it has disadvantages but he sees past them and thinks that is the best technique for him.

Unless you want to be bottom handed, which he does.

Every technique has it's pros and cons, because nobody is perfect. It's usually better to not work on changing your technique but to just adapt and learn how to use what you've got.

I know he has a hard bottom handed grip. I was asking does he pushes at the ball with loose hands or hard hands. Even if you have a hard bottom handed grip, if you want to defend then you can keep your bottom hand loose as the intention is to defense not to score thus no need of hard bottom hand which is a big con only while defending.

And that is no way rubbish;)

See the video of sachin in slow motion and concentrate on his grip only. He is a very tight bottom hand grip but when he defends see how he losses hi grip completely on the bottom part of the bat and allows to ball to come to the bat.

See the video for yourself.

@ Treva: I have a game tomorrow morning, and I'm a middle order batsman, so I don't know if I'll bat, but if I do, I'll tell you my approach and how my knock went.

@ Blake: Yeah, I actually was using a dead-straight backlift. It might make a difference because I have a pretty open stance.
What I mean my flopping is that: Let's say I'm trying to play an on-drive. I would make contact with the ball, but then my bottom hand would just twist over to the left [as a RHB.] Therefore the bat would swivel over, causing it to look like a somewhat front-foot flick.

@ AngryPixel: Naah, to be honest, I'd rather try and stick with the textbook stuff [straight backlift]. I don't want to mess up my technique even more, especially since I'm still a junior. But to satisfy you, I'll try it in a net-session. :P

@ Treva: Agreed ;). Actually I had a straight high backlift last year. I gave the pacers some serious damage, but I don't recommend the high backlift when the spinner comes on.

@ AngryPixel: Meh, a true batsman tries to keep his head down and play technically throughout his whole innings IMO.

@ McLovin: Yeah, I'll probably just stick with the basics, being a junior and all.

@ Treva: No man! You had the right intentions, so therefore your mindset & temperament is good. I think the only problem there is that you're trying to play too far forward, hence away from your body. But I've never seen you bat, so I wouldn't know 100%.

LOL I didn't see the second page of replies. xD

@ McLovin: Don't be so hard on yourself, practise makes perfect. ;)

@ AngryPixel: Yeah I'll try that mate. And yeah that's true, soft hands, I'll keep that in mind.

@ Ollie H: Yo I think he was talking to me, take it eazy on him. Lol.

@ Treva: You're not talking to me, right? Because I never said I prefered a bottom-hand dominated grip at all.
And yeah exactly, everybody has their own style. [:

@ AngryPixel: I don't see any rubbish in that at all, mate.
Don't even compare or use Sachin as an example though, that man is just something else, LOL. He is probably the most perfect batsman of the modern era [in terms of technicality.]
And btw thanx for the vid. [:

I Wasn't comparing you. I was just telling you how great players do it. How they switch between attacking and defensive made. Basic concept is same. Ponting,Sachin,Kallis,Sangakkara all loosen or tighten their bottom hand according to their intentions.

Just watch the video's of players playing shot. It would surely help. Coach is decent but not that good. He plays shots very slow while teaching but they are played in a split second in real life.

If you could upload a video of you batting then we can judge you better and tell whats going wrong.:spy

Around 3:15 "thrown your hands at the ball" - For me that's an automatic loft to the player in Cover/Short Mid-off. Exactly what Treva and I was talkin about earlier

Hey they used a Bangladeshi player from 99'. They dont know anything.

jk

That vidoe is good for frontfoot defensive and backfoot defensive shot. FF is played by AB and BF is played by Kallis i think.

Ah well then Trini, I'm not sure. I'm quite a top handed player, although most openers are and I'm definitely not a slogger - I value my wicket quite a bit..

It works for me, but whatever you want is fine.

I think Only defensive shots should be learned from coach. Other shots should be explored by themselves. Every player is different and most of the successful batsman are those who have natural flavor in their batting, baring the exception of few like dravid. Play the cover drive the way you want to play, the way you feel comfortable. Just keep the basics, dont play far from the body and try to reach the ball.

Imagine if someone had coached lara and asked him not to play flashy cover drives or sehwag to move your feet. They may be technically wrong but they kept the basics. Head stays still, keep eye on the ball and hand-eye coordination.

Disagree. There's no point if a player tries to hack and comes down the pitch with their feet moving away from the ball and skies a terrible shot. Of course coaches need to teach players how to play aggressive shots if they have obvious flaws in their technique.

I think what you are trying to say is that coaches shouldn't change players' technique if it works for them, like Sehwag or Katich. However, I have no idea what you are on about with Lara - why on earth would a coach want him to stop playing cover drives if he is so good? They might want to improve his technique early, that is all. Think your logic is kinda flawed.

..

I meant coaches shouldn't alter the natural game of a player. They should only improve the way player plays rather than changing the way player plays.

I flipin' swear, all you guys should be coaches. You guys know everything, but most importantly how to effectively use it.

And just an update on my batting. In 2 innings, I have two ducks. In the second match, I came in at the last over, and got out going for the biggy, so it's somewhat excuseable. The first match though, was just a fail. Low full-toss, I play over the ball trying to flick it onto the onside, and missed it completely.
In all fairness though I haven't netted in ages, so I've clearly lost all form.
But hopefully when I go to Trinidad two weeks from now, I get some legit coaching in terms of my batting, and hopefully I recover soon.

Still, comments will be strongly appreciated. Thanx. [:

We think we do mate, but we're just a bunch of idiots :laugh

Just watch the ball in response to getting out on a full toss, that's the best advice I can give you.
