Why were you updating the firmware anyways? As far as I know codecs play movies and not DVD drive's firmwares. 
Major problem with DVD Drive.

I'd tried countless codecs, none seemed to do the job and my mate suggested updating firmware. So when I went to the update site, it said that it 'increases media coverage', which sounded like it would help....

Increasing media coverage generally means supporting various more types of DVD making material, not the format.
Did you try K-Lite Codec pack?

Yeps, tried them all. One thing's for sure, I ain't never touching any firmware **** ever again! Good thing it's only going to cost around ?20...

Well, thanks for your help, guys. Just bought a new drive, a Samsung DVD-RW, installed it (it was a lot easier than I was expecting) and it seems to be ok.
Is installing a SATA hard drive that simple as well (I read somewhere that you don't have to worry about jumpers with them like you did with IDE drives)?
