Wow this was a shock something must have happened cause his ODI spot was safe as ever. Sad to see him go even though I've been calling for him to be sacked, I'm surprised he didn't want a fairytale finish at his home pitch. Also it's put us in an awkward situation where we have to find his replacement and with Watson not really fit we will have to call someone else up. Maybe a Jaques, Cosgrove or Voges.

It really is a sad day when your favourite players retires, especially under these circumstances. You would have to think that he was not selected in the squad for Perth, and that he's said to the selectors "we'll leave it at that then". He's been a great batsman, contributing to many Aussie victories, and I'm going to miss his graceful strokeplay forever. All the best in whatever he chooses to do from here.

I just read a report stating just that.

It's understood Martyn made his decision to quit after being left out of the squad for the third Ashes Test, which starts in Perth on Thursday, AAP reported.

CA is yet to announce that squad.

But there was no way he was going to be left out surely, as Watson wasn't going to be fit so Martyn could have had his final game at Perth.

Damn this is a shock. I would have loved to see him play his final match at his home ground. Maybe the selectors might give him a chance to play his last game at the WACA but if not the replacement will probably be Hodge or even Voges.

The selectors were going to give him his chance but hes retired so they have no choice but to look elsewhere.

martyn is or i say was a gr8 asset of crickert australlia.we will really missed his play.as we all know he is the most dominant player in australia who can play spin better than others.he is a gr8 fielder. wishing him all the very best for future.

i think damien martyn has made a good decission. becasue there is a chance he may be dropped form side . so its better to call of by himself.

This is sad news...I guess Its just the pressure of international cricket. I will miss his him at no. 4 for Australia..But aussie1st are you serious? lol Cosgrove? Voges? Players with no test experience? And if jaques was included then he would have to open and that would mean an entire re-shuffle. I'm guessing an all-rounder...hopefully Andrew Symonds.

I just saw this. It's pretty surprising. I didn't expect this at all. I was already looking forward of seeing him playing in the World Cup.

Anyway Martyn gave us a lot of memories with his perfecti timing in hitting the ball.

That'd be a pretty stupid decision to play Symonds, I've indicated the reasons in the Ashes thread. He likes to wield the willow and his batting is not suitable for the Test Cricket. Either Jaques or Hodge, although it would be out of the blue for Hodge... I don't think his been in contention for some time now. Hodge would be estastic over this.

But Martyn, one of the great Aussie batsman. One of the best records & one of the best techniques. Was apart of one of the great Aussie teams and he held his own.

Hodge is injured....with a thigh injury so hes out. I still think Andrew Symonds, because he is an entertaining batsmen and has a good history at Perth. With his Seam bowling it would allow the selectors to play Stuart MacGill.

This is a shock! Martyn was playing so well for Aussies!

It's understood Martyn made his decision to quit after being left out of the squad for the third Ashes Test, which starts in Perth on Thursday, AAP reported.

I really wonder whats wrong with Aussie selection!

Martyn has played superbly in Champ Trophy and infact he played a match winning role almost in all matches! He has the talents but Aussie selection panel not understanding that!

Ask "Martyn" to come to India..." We will make politics and include him in the squad! ;) j/k!

S.Waugh was thrown off from ODI side after loosing in ODI series, Bevan was thrown off in similar way and now Martyn joins the list ( Though Martyn was indirectly thrown off ) These guys have talents and has made huge contributions to the team which one can nevr forget! Atleast for this sake, they shd have allowed to end their careers in nice way rather than throwing them off just for the sake of young players!

Someone mentioned that on the ABC at 4pm they were saying Martyn was still going to be left out of the test squad even though Watson was injured.

Also surely the selectors wouldn't have dropped him from the ODI side as even I have no problems with him being in there after some match winning performances in the Champions trophy.
