Martyn announces retirement

It's a sad day, Martyn has always been one of my favorite Aussie batsmen.

I think this is probably because he knew he was going to be dropped, and decided that his chances of returning were very very slim.

I wish he was sticking around til the World Cup for ODI's though :(

I was surprised when I found out this morning.
This will effect the game plan a little if Martyn was going to be included in the third test.
He is a good player and I hope he does well in the future.

Hodge is injured....with a thigh injury so hes out. I still think Andrew Symonds, because he is an entertaining batsmen and has a good history at Perth. With his Seam bowling it would allow the selectors to play Stuart MacGill.

We already have batsman who can be entertaining. In Test Cricket, you don't need entertaining batsman. Ricky Ponting has also shown he doesn't really want to bowl Symonds much either and when he did bowl him it looked as if it was from publicity.

woah is this one a surprise! he was only on the ICC show last week with a story on him how he wasnt to play on another few years to stay in the Aust team

sources tell me voges in now in the Test team

Jumped before he was pushed :p?

Not a great way to end a great career but he was a quality batsman in his peak up until he was found out by England in 2005 and hasn't really came back since. Never actually liked the bloke though :p.

never have been a big fan of martyn but i was really surprised to hear about his retirement. it's a shame he couldn't go out on a high with the whole last game and all.

Don't have a big problem with this decision. The team needs to turn over some of its older players, so it could be a case of 'have one form slump and you're gone' from now on for a few players (Langer or Hayden may go if they have a big slump, Langer saved himself in that first Test)

Symonds is only the short term answer though the selectors have a obsession for Shane Watson for some reason the guy only has to be fit and hes in the team no matter how injury prone he is

I really cant understand why everyone wants to change a Australian team that hasnt lost their last 15 tests as the saying goes aint broke then dont fix it, well until they start losing I see no need for big changes

so where looking at

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Symonds

I think the all rounder idea needs to be ditched and Hodge should be in their at 4 or 5 and Clarke at 6 for the long term future

the replacement issue is meant to be discussed in the england in australia ashes thread

Bit of a shock to see Martyn retire from both International and domestic cricket at the same time. Even though he wasn't one of my favourite players I will miss him come in at number 4 :(

More info has come out on Martyn's retirement.

....
Sutherland was getting ready for the office Christmas party when an email from Martyn dropped into his inbox just after 11am.

It read in part: "If I'm not 100 per cent committed to the game, then the game doesn't deserve to have me there. It's actually time for someone else to take their chances. Cricket's been good to me and I'm leaving cricket in good hands and in a position where someone can come in and take the opportunities that I have been fortunate enough to have."

Sutherland subsequently spent a long time on the phone to the enigmatic batsman trying to understand what had moved him to retire. He then phoned the selectors, who were about to release a squad for the third Test with Martyn in it. Hastily, chairman Andrew Hilditch recalled his panel to search for an 11th-hour replacement.

Yeh, quite sad to see him go. He (to me) in the past few years has really been the player that holds the innings together whether they are way ahead or way behind. He has been very under-rated and is a player that could get his test spot (thinking that he was going to get dropped possibly) back anytime.

Yep one of the MOST UNDER-RATED Australian batsmen OF ALL TIME...
