Styris guides NZ home.

Scott Styris put his hand up for 2nd test selection in a dramatic win over the Victorian state side. Styris crafted a brilliant 124 to put NZ into the winner's circle.
Chasing 383 to win Lou Vincent smashed 131 off just 89 to put NZ in the hunt. But it was Stryis who lasted nearly the chase, falling 2 runs short.

The selectors will now have a tough choice to decide on the 2nd test team. If the pitch does not favour spin it is exspected Styris or Jacob Oram will come in. Lou Vincent is pushing hard for Matthew Sinclair's test opening spot after sinclair got 0 & 29 in the 1st test.

13 man squad: S. Fleming (c), Sinclair, Richardson, Astle, Styris, McMillian, Cairns, McCullum, Oram, Martin, Tuffey, Bond.

Second Test

Well Fraps went early.

Australia were steaming ahead on the 1st morning however a brilliant fight back by Cairns and Vetori saw NZ take honours in the first session. at 71/0 through the first hour and a bit, Australia were on track for a great start to a test they cant lose, or they will not be able to win the series. But vettori removed langer for 29, the third time he has got out to Vettori, with a floaty delivery and they found themselves at 71/1. Vettori ended the morning with 1/14 off 7 overs. But what was to follow was sensational. Cairns had already beaten Hayden out side the off stump on 3 ocassios\ns, however this time he found an inside edge and the ball torpedoed ontp the stumps. New Zealand had the other opener for 44 off just 58 balls. Cairns then let Matin off the hook as he strayed onto the leg stump and they batsmen ran 3. then ponting wipped him away from two. The magic of Cairns returned and he had Ponting with a beautiful line and length ball caught in the slips by Bruce Martin for just 2. Waugh and Martyn slowly set about rebuilding the innings and Australia at lunch were 101/3 off 28 overs.

scorecard: Australia 101/3.
Langer 29 (55) 71/1
hayden 44 (58) 75/2
Ponting 2 (2) 80/3
Cainrs 2/35 (8)
Vettori 1/14 (7)

Australis once again showed thir lack of batting depth falling for just 176. Cairns was the star with 4 wickets, Vettori got 3, Martin 2, Tuffey 1. Australia resumed after lunch well, taking charge of some inadeqaute fast bowling, the only thiing holding them abck was Vettori. 1st to go after lunch was Martyn trying to smash Tuffey to the boundary. Lehman looked to repay the faith for his selection, but swpt across the line against vettori and was gone. Waugh then went on the attack hitting Martin for 4 fours in one over. Gilchrist was out of soughts and continued to show his vulnerablity to Vettori, geting out for the 3rd in a row. waugh went once to often for the boundary and was caught off the bowling of Cairns. Bichel didn't trouble the scorers. Australia contiued losing wicktes as Martin continued on from picking upl Bichel to get McGrath and Gillespie was finally out edging to a diing astle, becoming Cairns' 4th scalp. Australia will have to bowl extraordinary if they are going to pull NZ back. the same side made 517/9 dec last outing.

Well an interesting 3rd session. Nz resuming on 15/0 from 3 overs...they finished 109/2 just 67 behind Australia. Lou Vincent earnt his call up with a great 50, pl;undering 5 fours off one over from Gillespie. That was after Richardson was ajudged LBW to Macgill. Vincent then went for a good 52 off 80 balls. 93/2 at that stage. Astle and Fleming are playing with great control as MacGill continues to bowl at around 1 run per over. NZ with a strong position at the close.

Good bowling performance and a solid start to the batting. Especially 5 fours in the over from Gillespie. Should be able to build a nice first innings lead from here.

Does look as though the LBW is heading down the leg-side. Look at the keeper, he's going to take that ball at leg slip!
