The PlanetCricket Champions League, known simply as the Champions League, is an international List-A competition played between the top domestic franchises from the major cricketing nations. It is the most prestigious cricketing league on the forums, jointly started by Prithvi (formerly Binnu) & Mihir Doshi in 2009. This league has been managed by various league holders till date.

Now in it's 14th season, the Champions League has gone through an unprecedented expansion with a record 16 teams participating in the event. England and South Africa were allowed to send over two teams, but beyond the traditional powers, the league also features teams from associate nations Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands and Scotland. Na Maloom Afraad, coming off successes with his Haier Cup Pakistan and Associates 'A' League has been tasked with the league management duties.

4 Points are awarded for a win, 2 for a tie or no result, and no point is awarded for losing a game.

1 Point for scoring with a run rate of 8.00+ in the first ten overs of an innings

2 Points for maintaining the run rate of Your opposition to 3.50 or less
1 Point for bowling out a side for less than 75

LINE-UP RULES
The line-up rules are pretty simple, a team can have a maximum of four overseas/associate players, the team can not change their captain. The playing xi must consist of a wicket keeper, obviously, and at least five players who can bowl. But, I'd recommend You to have six, so a player like Hashim Amla doesn't get selected by the simulator to bowl the last couple of overs. Which can actually cost You a game.

PLAYER CLASHES
There are players that are contracted by more than a franchise, if a player is contracted by teams that have a fixture together, then a player clash rule will be used.

A player is contracted by teams that have a fixture together, but that player is a local to one of them. In this case, the player will be retained by his local team.

Case 2
A player is contracted by teams that have a fixture together, but that player is a local to both of them. In this case, RANDOM.org will be used to determine that player’s team.

Case 3
A player is contracted by teams that have a fixture together, but that player is an overseas to both of them. In this case, the player will be declared unavailable for that match, and both the teams will have to select there line-up from the remaining players of the squad.

KNOCKOUTS
If a quarter-final, semi-final or the final results in a tie, then the team finishing better in the pool stages will be declared winner. If two teams managed by one person, or two teams from one country qualify for the quarter-finals, then they will face each other.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT & HOST SELECTION
The format of Champions League XIV is round-robin and knock-outs. There is a grand total of 31 games that will be played in this tournament, excluding warm-ups. The hosts are selected in a poll set-up by the manager of the league, and the members of PlanetCricket choose the nation they want to see host this tournament, by voting in that poll.

Summary
​

Champions League XIV was the fourteenth edition of the Champions League that took place in England & Wales from 19 June to 27 September 2015, using the List-A format. A total of 31 matches were played, nine fewer than the previous edition of the Champions League despite an increase in the team count by seven. The tournament was managed and simulated by Na Maloom Afraad for all but the final, where unavoidable circumstances forced The Author to temporarily take charge.

The 16 participating teams were divided into four groups of four for the group stage, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final; an ideal format that could have possibly saved the 2007 Cricket World Cup from disaster if only it had been put in use. The Abbottabad Falcons and Centurion Lions progressed through to the quarter-finals from Pool A, Belfast Knights and Guyana Heat from Pool B, Spitfires Basnahira and Cape Cobras from Pool C, and Toronto Hurricanes alongside Tottenham Hotspur from Pool D.

Belfast Knights, Cape Cobras, Guyana Heat and Toronto Hurricanes then progressed to the semi-finals, where the Belfast Knights and Toronto Hurricanes caused the biggest stir in the history of the Champions League by qualifying for the final. And so, for the first time since it's inception, a Champions League final featured two teams from associate nations - with the Belfast Knights being from Ireland and Toronto Hurricanes from Canada. The latter was even more perplexing given that Canadian cricket was in a freefall since failing to qualify for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and subsequently losing it's ODI status.

In the final face-off, it was the Toronto Hurricanes who emerged victorious and went on to create history by becoming the first team from an associate nation to ever win the coveted Champions League trophy. Hashim Amla, who played for as many as 4 different teams and emerged on top of the batting averages for two was adjudged Player of the Season for the second consecutive event.

Lineup of the tournament​

Hashim Amla (Belfast Knights, Cape Cobras, Chennai Phoenix, Mountaineers)

Hashim Amla, who was adjudged Player of the Season for the second consecutive Champions League season topped the run charts for two of his four teams - scoring 255 runs at 51.00 for the Cape Cobras and 216 runs at 72.00 for the Mountaineers. He saved his best for the Belfast Knights, for whom he scored an astonishing 375 runs in 4 innings at an average of 93.75. However, an even more astonishing tally from South African team-mate Faf du Plessis saw him fall second on their batting charts.

Still, he was by far one of the most consistent batsmen in the tournament, finished with the most number of centuries (4) and dominated the new ball like no other. This was evident when he scored a record 179 against Guyana Heat in the group stages and an even more impressive 81-ball 112 in the final. If only Belfast hadn't collapsed after his dismissal, he could have also been part of a CL winning side to go with his batting accolades just like the previous season.

Faf du Plessis (Belfast Knights & Centurion Lions)

Faf du Plessis could consider himself hard done by after missing out on the Player of the Season award in favor of his South Africa and Belfast team-mate Hashim Amla. He even outscored the latter's tally of 375 for the Belfast Knights with 553 runs in 6 innings (two more than Amla) at a much superior average of 138.25, and emerged on top of the runs list again while playing for the Centurion Lions.

His consistent run of scores while batting second, which included 79 in the quarter-final and an unbeaten 121 in the semi-final, helped Belfast overcome Tottenham and the Cape Cobras and do Irish cricket proud by entering the Champions League final. He chipped in with 79 again, but it just wasn't Belfast's day in the end.

Kumar Sangakkara (Amsterdam Ajax & Spitfires Basnahira)

The Sri Lankan batting legend showed he had lost none of his ability both behind and in front of the stumps even after hanging up his boots from the international arena. 262 runs from 4 innings at an average of 65.50 for Basnahira was proof of that. He barely missed a thing while keeping wickets as shown by his 9 catches.

He predominantly played for and lead the Sri Lankan franchise Spitfires Basnahira to the quarter-finals, where Guyana Heat's extremely resilient last wicket pair hung on to clinch a thrilling victory that knocked his side out. His experience was badly missed by Amsterdam Ajax who couldn't make it past the group stages. He played just one match for them and top-scored with 89 in their sole victory of the competition.

Steven Smith (Abbottabad Falcons)

Quite predictably, Steven Smith proved to be one of the toughest batsmen to dismiss in the competition just as he is in the current international area. He was the fulcrum of Abbottabad's underperforming batting lineup with 289 runs from 4 innings at an average of 72.25. It wasn't more clear than in the quarter-final clash against Toronto, where he cut a dejected figure with 52 while the rest of Abbottabad's lineup imploded to 136 all out.

His tally of runs and personal high of 139 placed him third on both the top run-scorers of the event and highest individual scores of the competition. He also managed to pick up a wicket with his potent yet under-used legbreaks.

Ryan ten Doeschate (Abbottabad Falcons, Amsterdam Ajax, Centurion Lions, Dhaka Thunder, Guyana Heat, Sydney Shooters, Toronto Hurricanes)

Ryan ten Doeschate, the Dutch journeyman all-rounder had the most gruelling season among all players. The number of teams he played for was only marginally higher than the number of matches he played in total! While being given a variety of roles by each side he turned out for, he acclimatized best to the lineups of Toronto Hurricanes and Guyana Heat.

For Guyana, he was doughty middle-order batsman capable of opening the bowling with incisiveness, as shown by his spell of 3/35 against eventual runners-up Belfast. For Toronto, he was the glue that held their middle-order together and nothing much more than a support bowler. It was his batting that led the Canadian franchise to victory in the end, as he scored a peerless 126* in the final to help Toronto chase down 300 with almost 4 overs to spare.

JP Duminy (Cape Cobras)

JP Duminy was probably the only player to consistently score runs and at the same time pick up wickets in a tournament where there was something of a dearth of genuine all-rounders. He finished with 228 runs from 5 innings at an average of 57 and fetched 5 wickets at 25.00 with his tight offbreaks.

Ashish Bagai (Toronto Hurricanes)

The former Canadian skipper captained the Toronto Hurricanes to a Champions League victory. If that wasn't achievement enough, he also affected a staggering 13 dismissals from 6 matches, one of which he played without the keeping gloves on.

His batting however was quite mediocre with just 120 runs from 6 innings at an average of 24, but he performed credibly in the role that was given to him - to see off the new ball; something which Toronto's openers failed to do time and again. Nevertheless, his astute captaincy and brilliance behind the wickets was a treat to watch as Toronto shocked the cricketing world and made associate cricket proud.

John Davison (Toronto Hurricanes)

That John Davison was even playing in Champions League proved to be more of a surprise than him being one of the most influential players of the season. Coaxed out of retirement for the Canadian Premier League where Toronto emerged victorious, the 45-year old Australian spin coach and former Canadian World Cup hero decided to have one last go at professional cricket by making himself available for their CL squad.

His batting, which had deteriorated considerably by the time he called it a day during the 2011 World Cup, couldn't set the world alight this time either. Rather, it was his under-rated offbreaks which did so as he went on to collect 10 wickets from 5 matches an unbelievably low average of 12.90 to finish as the tournament's fifth highest wicket-taker. To top that off, his team went on to win the coveted trophy - making it an ideal way to finish a career for good this time.

Mitchell Johnson (Toronto Hurricanes)

Mitchell Johnson, the Australian speed demon was probably the most vital cog in Toronto's CL-winning outfit. With not much of a batting lineup to rely on in the absence of Ryan ten Doeschate for most part of the competition, Toronto often had to defend low totals or bowl the opposition out cheaply to give themselves a chance of victory.

He shepherded their bowling attack to do just that with 14 wickets from 6 matches at an average of 17.29, and emerged as the best bowler of the competition. He also proved his worth as a lower-order batsman in the semi-final against Guyana Heat which ended up being tied, thus helping Toronto to progress to the final due to a superior finish in the group stages.

Dale Steyn (Abbottabad Falcons, Canterbury Wizards, Cape Cobras)

Dale Steyn did with the ball what Hashim Amla did with the bat in the competition. After turning out for three different teams, he finished on top of the bowling charts for two of them - Canterbury Wizards for whom he picked 7 wickets at 14.57, and the Cape Cobras for whom he was at his irresistible best with 13 wickets at 18.23.

Despite that, he and the teams he played for eventually choked in the knockouts in a manner not to dissimilar from the South African national side. He saved his worst for last in the 2nd semi-final where he conceded 87 runs from 10 overs and was completely taken apart by Belfast's Faf du Plessis.

Umar Gul (Spitfires Basnahira)

Spitfires Basnahira's faith in Umar Gul eventually paid off as the constantly sidelined Pakistani pacer finished as the second highest wicket-taker of the competition with 13 scalps at 13.31. His team went on to dominate the group stages with 3 wins out of 3 before being knocked out by Guyana Heat in the semi-final.

The 6/34 he took on a lively pitch at the Rose Bowl was rather surprisingly the only five-wicket haul of the tournament which was played mostly on pace-friendly pitches.

12th man -

Devendra Bishoo (Guyana Heat)

Devendra Bishoo, the legspinner from Guyana was easily the best spin bowler of the competition. He picked 12 wickets in 5 matches at 14.58 and was the only bowler to pick two 4-wicket hauls.

After dazzling in the group stages with an impressive 4/14 against Chennai Phoenix, he saved two of his best performances for the knockouts. His 4/42 with the ball and his unbeaten 25 with the bat in the semi-final against Toronto weren't enough to take Guyana all the way to the final.

Best matches of the tournament​

This season had it's fair share of nail-biting thrillers. None perhaps were greater than the three mentioned below, some of which could be considered as the best matches to be played in any Champions League edition till date.

1. 1st Semi-Final, Toronto Hurricanes vs Guyana Heat at SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff

It was probably the most thrilling semi-final in Champions League history. After opting to bat first on a seaming wicket, Toronto's top-order failed miserably. Openers John Davison and Hiral Patel were snapped up by Junaid Khan and Ravi Rampaul respectively. The score read 11/2 when Ashish Bagai and Kevin Pietersen were out in the middle.

Bagai was the next to fall for a 28-ball 12. Pietersen oozed class scoring 41 with seven boundaries to his name. Devendra Bishoo, who had earlier neutralized the big hitting threat of Rizwan Cheema also removed Pietersen as Toronto slumped to 72/5 by the 20th over.

Jonathan Augustus and Toronto's lower-order including the likes of Kenneth Kamyuka, Damodar Daesrath, Mitchell Johnson and Daniel Vettori worked hard to help them crawl past the 200-run mark before batting out their full quota. Bishoo finished with 4/42, his second such haul of the tournament. Guyana's pace trio of Edwards, Junaid Khan and Rampaul all chipped in with wickets and bowled respectable spells.

Though Toronto's bowling lineup consisted of Johnson, Vettori and Stuart Broad, the general consensus was that Guyana would chase it down with plenty of overs to spare. They did have a powerful batting lineup consisting of Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch, Mahela Jayawardene, Ross Taylor and the 5-time West Indian World Cup veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Despite losing 3 wickets, they were coasting towards their target with the score at 95 after 15 overs - with Finch and Chanderpaul making batting look very easy. However, a stunning catch to dismiss the former by the 45-year old John Davison off Johnson's bowling turned it around for Toronto. With Chanderpaul also being dismissed a couple of overs later, Toronto saw their opportunity and pounced on their opponents like a pack of hyenas. Kenneth Kamyuka and Rizwan Cheema bowled tight lines to bog down Guyana's attacking batsmen.

Ross Taylor was bowled by Kamyuka while trying to break the shackles. Ravi Rampaul couldn't get himself going at all and holed out in the deep off Davison, who had taken another brilliant catch to dismiss Deonarine earlier. Guyana were languishing at 169/8. To Devendra Bishoo, their No 9, the match was still far from over. He added 14 with Edwards before the latter became Kamyuka's second wicket of the match. And so, Guyana were down to their last man with another 24 runs to get.

Toronto skipper Ashish Bagai unleashed his best bowlers at the duo, but neither one of Broad, Johnson or Vettori could stop Guyana from making it past 200 and then leveling the scores at 206. Mitchell Johnson gave it one last good shot with a pin point accurate yorker which was too good for Junaid Khan, the No 11 who had got his team over the line in a similar situation the match before. The umpire raised his finger and it was all over. The 1st semi-final had been tied.

There was a bit of confusion towards the end when the officials decided to ask both the teams to get ready for a super over to settle the result. They seemed to have missed the knockout tie rule set for the tournament which stated "If a quarter-final, semi-final or the final results in a tie, then the team finishing better in the pool stages will be declared winner." Toronto's manager had his wits about him to notice the honest mistake and point it out to the match referee, who declared the result in Toronto's favor for their superior finish in the group stages. They were just in time to avoid another Full Member-Associate conspiracy theory from developing.

2. 3rd Quarter-Final, Spitfires Basnahira vs Guyana Heat at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham

The match before that epic tie involving Toronto in the semi-final, Guyana Heat and Spitfires Basnahira had a fierce battle between themselves in a bid to qualify for the semi-finals. After winning the toss, Chris Gayle decided to give his bowlers first use of the greenish track by opting to bowl first.

Junaid Khan had a wicket in his first over, that of Vandort bowled while trying to cut an away-swinging delivery that wasn't high enough. Kumar Sangakkara came in at No 3 for Basnahira and hit his first ball to the fence. The pitch didn't trouble him one bit as he took on Guyana's fast bowlers and raced to a 43-ball half-century. Shikhar Dhawan at the other end was a bit over-cautious in his approach and never really tried to score quickly.

With Basnahira's score closing in on 100, Sangakkara was bowled by an excellent legbreak from Devendra Bishoo for 54. In the next over, Ravi Rampaul was re-introduced into the attack and bagged the wicket of Dhawan for a painstaking 29 off 69 balls. Mohammad Hafeez was dismissed for a golden duck the very next ball to put Rampaul on the verge of a hat-trick. It didn't happen this time as Kandamby shouldered arms to a delivery outside offstump. But soon, a procession began as both Kallis and Kandamby were dismissed cheaply by Fidel Edwards in the 24th over. There was more to come with Gayan Wijekoon and Sachithra Senanayake also departing without much of a fight to leave Basnahira tottering at 124/8.

Nos 9 and 10 showed a lot more ticker and put up a 60-run stand for the 9th wicket, dealing only in singles and twos. Edwards claimed Thushara for 27 in his final over to finish with an expensive yet effective spell of 10-0-56-3. Umar Gul added 18 with Dilhara Fernando for the last wicket before the latter became Devendra Bishoo's third wicket. It was still enough to get them past 200 which looked very unlikely at one stage. Edwards, Rampaul and Bishoo finished with 3 wickets apiece with the only other going to Junaid Khan. Deonarine who didn't pick any wickets was the most economical, conceding just 21 runs from his nine overs. Guyana had been set a target of 202.

Chasing 202, Guyana were off to a poor start with the bat. After a lucky escape in the first over when an inside-edge missed his stumps and went to the boundary instead, Anthony Bramble was bowled quite convincingly by Thilan Thushara. A struggling Mahela Jayawardene was out without scoring to the in-form Umar Gul.

He was soon joined by skipper Chris Gayle and Ryan ten Doeschate - both dismissed by offspinner Sachithra Senanayake. The Guyanese facially tattooed duo of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Narsingh Deonarine joined hands with the score at 53/5. Together, they steered the ship in the right direction with a half-century stand. Both Chanderpaul and Deonarine cleared the boundaries two times each. They ran well between wickets and didn't take any unnecessary risks with a fairly straightforward required rate of less than 4 an over.

Running out of runs to defend, the Basnahira captain turned to the ever reliable Jacques Kallis who got the much needed breakthrough by dismissing Chanderpaul for a well played 46. Deonarine got past his half-century with a six over mid-wicket but threw it away while attempting another reckless heave off Thushara. All of a sudden, Basnahira were back on top with Guyana needing another 52 with only 3 wickets in hand.

Devendra Bishoo spooned one to cover off Hafeez to depart for 4. The next over, Ravi Rampaul was bounced out by Gul who picked his third. The Spitfires Basnahira were just one wicket away from securing a semi-final berth. Failing to realize that a one-day match isn't officially over till the last wicket falls or 50 overs are bowled, their fielders became a little too complacent for their own good.

Misfields, byes and unimaginative captaincy allowed Guyana's last-wicket pair to slowly but surely crouch towards their destination. After having survived till the 45th over, their confidence in themselves increased. Junaid Khan struck two boundaries off Hafeez in the 47th over to bring the equation into single figures. With just 2 needed from the next 3 overs, Basnahira couldn't possibly last them out now. They had to turn to Umar Gul, their best wicket-taking option. But it was too late.

Junaid struck the match-winning four to dash Basnahira's hopes and take Guyana into the semi-final. After thoroughly dominating the group stage with 3 wins out of 3, the Spitfires Basnahira had choked. Guyana's coach Sir Vivian Richards rated the match as one of the closest he's ever seen since the 1975 World Cup semi-final between the West Indies and Pakistan which took place at this very ground 40 years ago. Richards himself played in that match where West Indies' last wicket pair chased down 267 despite being 203/9 at one stage. He was all praises for his side and rightly so.

3. Pool D, Match 10 - Toronto Hurricanes vs Sydney Shooters at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham

This match was played on perhaps the dampest-looking pitch after a good deal of rain early in the morning. By the time the match started, Sydney Shooters' skipper David Warner opted to have a bowl on a pitch which looked like paradise for bowlers.

Not surprisingly, Toronto got off to the most disastrous start by any batting side in the competition. They were four down with just 7 runs on board by the 4th over, having lost all of Hiral Patel, Rizwan Cheema, Ashish Bagai and Damodar Daesrath for 1, 2, 1 and 1 respectively. Kevin Pietersen and former Ugandan-turned-Canadian national Kenneth Kamyuka managed to put up 50 for the 5th wicket. As it turned out, this was to be the highest partnership of not just Toronto's innings, but the entire match.

Ravichandran Ashwin spun one past Pietersen's defences, dismissing him for 26. Ryan Harris, playing in his final List-A tournament struck Kamyuka plumb in front. Suresh Raina was also brought on to bowl and picked up the wicket of Mitchell Johnson. Zeeshan Siddiqi, Toronto's specialist No 7 batsman also failed to deliver scoring only 9. With the score at 67/7 and then 78/8, they were in danger of being bowled out before reaching three figures.

However, they had a good if accidental back-up in the form of John Davison. Once the most feared opener from an associate nation in World Cups, Davison at 45 wasn't trusted to bat any higher than No 10 - lower than even Mitchell Johnson and Daniel Vettori. He went on to prove just how silly that move was by hitting a rare boundary off Ashwin. Davison added 24 with Vettori for the 9th wicket to get his team past 100, and 12 with Broad before being the last man out with the score at 114. Having lost their first match of the competition and being one loss away from elimination, which really wouldn't have shocked many given that they're a Canadian franchise, Toronto didn't have much to lose.

Mitchell Johnson picked up the early wicket of Nic Maddinson owing to the seemingly ageless reflexes of Davison. Toronto could have had another, but a chance off David Warner's bat went begging between keeper and slip in the 7th over.

Daniel Vettori was introduced into the attack the next over and dismissed Misbah-ul-Haq for 6. Warner was joined by the Suresh Raina with the score at 25/2. The left-handed duo were looking to dig deep to ensure no further loss and it worked for a while. Then, after they had put up 40 for the 3rd wicket, Davison returned to the act by getting rid of the dangerous Warner for a 60-ball 36. Following Warner's dismissal, the rusty Adam Crosthwaite who hadn't played competitive cricket in more than three years also fell to Davison whose figures read 3-0-3-2. Raina also edged behind while attempting to drive a full length delivery. Sydney had lost half their side for 89, but had only 25 more to get.

Johnson was re-introduced into the attack by Toronto in an attempt to cause further damage before the lights went out. He did more than just that. By removing Ashwin and then Ronchi, he actually gave his side a sniff of victory with Sydney seven down and needed another 15 runs to win. A brilliant piece of glovework by skipper Ashish Bagai saw Ryan Harris stumped off Vettori for 1. It was down to Peter Siddle and Morne Morkel now. The latter skied one off Johnson while backing away from the short stuff and was easily caught out by Stuart Broad. Sydney needed another 7 to win with just one wicket remaining. Siddle and Fawad Ahmed decided to get them in singles.

While attempting the one to level the scores, Siddle realized to his horror that he had actually hit it straight into the safe hands of John Davison at cover. It was over! Sydney had fallen one short of leveling the scores. In other words, they were defeated. While chasing a paltry 114. Mitchell Johnson was declared Man of the match for his 4/30 off 8 overs. Equally deserving of the award was Davison who scored that crucial 16, had the safest pair of hands on the field and finished with an awe-inspiring spell of 5-0-7-2.

It was the most unbelievable result of this edition of the Champions League after the Guyana-Toronto semi-final tie, and a catalyst in getting the Toronto Hurricanes to believe they could go the distance in this competition.

Before we get Season XV underway, there are a couple of things that need to be done first.

1) The managers with more than one team, namely @Aravind. (Hobart Tigers, Kilkenny Pelicans & ROP Rams) and @Baahubali (ROP Rams & South Zone), will need to pick one while handing over control of their other teams to a co-manager or whosoever they see fit.

2) The Rest of Pakistan Rams will need to trim their squad to 18 players from the 20-odd they were allowed in NMA's Haier Cup. To get the squad composition to match on, I'd say go with 11 locals and 7 overseas/associate players. And one of them must be 'uncapped' or however NMA put it to meet the lineup requirements.

A minimum of 7 locals in the playing XI, and a maximum of 4 overseas/associate players - one of whom must be an uncapped player. This applies for the Rest of Pakistan Rams who have qualified for Champions League XV through Haier Cup Pakistan.​

I'll be ready to get this season started once all this is done. And if someone could be so kind as to make a banner for Champions League XV, that'd be great too. Other than that, I've updated the index with the fixtures, venues and everything else of note.
