This morning started with a smile for me (despite the Bears' shameful performance in the Superbowl last night) as a friend sent me a link to an article on The Guardian's website about the new Macintosh advertising campaign. It was so good I had to share it. Here's a little excerpt:

The Guardian: I hate Macs said:
"Unless you have been walking around with your eyes closed, and your head encased in a block of concrete, with a blindfold tied round it, in the dark - unless you have been doing that, you surely can't have failed to notice the current Apple Macintosh campaign starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which has taken over magazines, newspapers and the internet in a series of brutal coordinated attacks aimed at causing massive loss of resistance.

They perform a small comic vignette aimed at highlighting the differences between the two computers. So in one, the PC has a "nasty virus" that makes him sneeze like a plague victim; in another, he keeps freezing up and having to reboot. This is a subtle way of saying PCs are unreliable. Mitchell, incidentally, is wearing a nerdy, conservative suit throughout, while Webb is dressed in laid-back contemporary casual wear. This is a subtle way of saying Macs are cool.

The ads are adapted from a near-identical American campaign - the only difference is the use of Mitchell and Webb. They are a logical choice in one sense (everyone likes them), but a curious choice in another, since they are best known for the television series Peep Show - probably the best sitcom of the past five years - in which Mitchell plays a repressed, neurotic underdog, and Webb plays a selfish, self-regarding poseur. So when you see the ads, you think, "PCs are a bit rubbish yet ultimately lovable, whereas Macs are just smug, preening tossers." In other words, it is a devastatingly accurate campaign."
This made my morning as I too hate Macs and agree with pretty much everything the article has to say. You can read the full article here.

I have nothing against Macs, since I know a few people who use them (mostly graphic designers), but being a bit of a power user, I prefer the ultimate customisability of PCs (windows and linux...)

Apple Mac's are just funky! But I prefer PC's, especially now that Vista is out. A big fault with mac's at the moment is that the only game I have that would work on a Mac is FM.

On a lighter note, Mitchell and Webb are good!

I would always go with PCs for its customisation and also for no company having a monopoly on Hardware and Software including M$.

The only good thing about Mac is it's looks but thats not enough to get me to change to it.

PC vs. Mac. Those ads are so biased towards Mac, makes the PC look like nothing. Mac doesn't suit a lot of people anyway.

having a mac is great, for about a week and then you realise you spent twice as much as you should...

Maybe because it is an advert for macs...

I dont like macs probably because I am so used to PCs.

There are not enough games for Macs. And I don't think I could ever switch. PCs are just so much better.

But can you honestly say that Mac is better? Could be personal preference.

Mac is better for some people, PC for others. For the not so handy users, and the graphic designers etc, Mac is the way to go. For the others, gamers, power users, and many other categories a PC is better.

*nods*

What he said...

Of course you can always just buy both :p One of my lectures had a Mac laptop, Windows one. Think he did his messaging and browsing on his Mac, gaming on Windows and programming on linux

Technically on the hardware side, Mac has always been ahead of PC, just that the Windows somehow is a better operating system and thats what made a PC so popular. Even G. Boycott's mum can use a PC but not a Mac:
