What an article! Seriously, what an amazing article ! I see an analogy here. Replace the terms England, Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores with the terms India, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Greg Chappell.

I think Greg was hard-done by some of the Indian players' attitude of calling the shots. Its sad that he couldn't complete what he started off with but well, thats life. And lets not forget Greg got us Raina, Dhoni, Irfan as a batsman, Sreesanth and many more talents. I liked the guy and his coaching style.

Feel sorry for Moores and Greg !

Some crater size holes here. First of all, Greg didn't get us Dhoni. He wasn't even the coach when Dhoni made his debut. Secondly, about Irfan, I would rather say that Greg actually ruined his career completely by trying to change him to an allrounder and making him the guinea pig of his experiments time and again. Coming to Raina, Greg or no Greg, he would have been picked anyway as he had a brilliant Ranji season with UP that year. (620 runs in six games!!) Also, you say that Greg was responsible for spotting "many more talents". Alright then, let us see some of the names of cricketers in favour of whom Greg always used to shout; VRV Singh, Wasim Jaffer, Robin Uthappa, ...... you know what's funny about this list? It's that all these players are nowhere in the picture right now. What's ironical, the various players Greg discarded in his regime, in the pretext of building a young India (Zaheer, Sehwag, etc), it's those players only who are now saving our faces again and again in different matches. Tell me, why I should give Mr Chappell any credit then for spotting these so called "talents" you speak of ?

Greg did some things horribly wrong but there are certain things he did very well. He saw something in Sreesanth that others were not able to see. Same with Uthappa. Uthappa may be out of the team but that's part and parcel of cricket. It's very difficult to get into the team at the moment but I wouldn't be surprised if Uthappa made a comeback soon enough. He's been performing very, very well.

However, he did ruin Irfan's career... among other things.

Greg had a different method of coaching. Everyone has a method, this was his. It worked against Sri Lanka 6-1, against England and a lot of teams. And the Worlc Cup debacle wasn't exactly his fault. The team was divided into factions by seniors.

See, he had this one concept in his mind when he took over the reigns of Indian cricket- No one can have preferential treatment. It doesnt matter if you are a senior, junior or someone just into the team. Everyone is Equal.

This concept didn't go down well with some seniors who wanted to blow their own trumpets around and thought under-performing in a few games was fine. When Greg objected to this callous attitude, these players made a big issue out of it and who suffered? We did.

About Irfan, well, we needed an allrounder so that we wouldn't be a batsman or bowler short and at the same time, play a specialist. Irfan was his best choice. And he delivered ! When Irfan was shinning with the Bat and with Ball, no one really had a problem with it. Everyone was going ga-ga about his ability. But the moment he hit a rough patch, everyone went like "why the heck do we have a player like him in the team? What has he done for the team? Drop him. Its all Greg's fault". To date, Irfan thanks Greg and doesn't believe Greg ruined him. And he knows a thing or 2 more than we do as he was at the centre of the entire situation. You've gotta take the good with the bad. Thats the way of life.

As for Zak & Viru, lets not forget that Greg's approach of "shape up or ship out" actually spurred them on to prove him wrong and turned out to be awesome for Indian cricket. The fire with which Viru and Zak returned is legendary stuff. Like Ray Jennings once said, "You need to pick fights with a few players to get the best out of them. After the match when PK asks me how did I bowl, I tell him he was bad. It really fires him up and helps him and the team in the process".

Raina and Sreesanth really bloomed under him. No one really gave a crap about Sreesanth in particular but Greg backed him, backed his ability and we've all seen how he has bloomed.

So like I said, we've gotta take the good with the bad.
