Present Era low on talent! 2017

Been on my mind a while guys. Is this era lacking of genuine cricketers? No Lara/Warne/Dravid/Pollock/Sobers/Wasim/Don?

When you have the number one and two bowlers in test cricket as Ashwin and Jadega or the numer one and two batsmen as Smith/Pujara, these guys just dont scream out as being a Macgrath or Warne, a Ponting or Kallis!

Your thoughts? Undeniably by some margine Dale Steyn of SA is heads and shoulders above the rest and probably the only legendary bowler playing, there are some young Aussies coming up but they havent break into test as yet to make a true mark. Joe Root and Kohli stand out as the batsmen but can we really place these guys as legends, given the poor attacks they wouldve faced throughout their careers?

Starc, Steyn, Johnson, Anderson, Zaheer Khan
Warner, Smith, Root, Kohli, Williamson, AB De Villiers, Sangakarra
These players are legends In my opinion. For us who have seen the older players play, this era players how much good they play they will never replace the old guard as we are attached to the older player.
But you ask somebody who has just watching cricket they can easily say the players I mentioned as legends.

Last I check Johnson, Sangakara and Zaheer were all retired. Of the three only Johnson was a special star while Sanga remebered for Stats only and played at a time when many players were much better.

I forgot Williamson he is an amazing batsman also, certainly one to keep an eye on. Ab Devil is nothing special and I not convinced Smith is anything special.

I think @Jack Ryder has hit the nail on the head. I suspect you tend to put a higher opinion of those that were playing during your formative years. That and the nature of popularity has changed, it used to be obvious, back in my day it you might have had posters on the wall, replica player specific shirts were a bigger thing, you might try to mimick their bowling action or batting stance etc. These days popularity is defined by things like social media following and interaction which is a little more subtle than perhaps it was previously...

Interesting take with social media.

I think they will still be counted as this gen.

I believe that is only for you. I think they both have imprinted their stamp on the game.

You definitely added some good points.[DOUBLEPOST=1490278917][/DOUBLEPOST]Everybody I know used to try to mimic Zaheer's bowling style.

Zaheer was amazing but I just felt he never played long enough but easily the best Indian fast bowler of all time.

Yeah I can see why people will give Smith and AB a high rating but would you compare them to Sachin/Ponting/Lara or Viv/Greg Chap/Barry Richards?

The players that Jack Ryder suggested to be legends connot be regarded as legends. It's too early to say that they are legends because Root, Kohli, Smith are still young players. AB has a few years left. Based on their current stats, they are very good batsmen but just cannot be called a legend as they have many years left. When these batsmen have retired then we will be able to say if these guys are legends. In my mind, they can be regarded as "great players" of the modern game. Over the years Kohli, Root, Smith and AB and Williamson will become better players. Also keeping in mind that now days there are a lot of pitches that are very good for batting that for the past two years we've seen teams racking up totals around 400. But my point is that we have to give these young guns some time to be called "legends". Bowlers now days have done reasonably well considering how many batting tracks there are nowdays.

Injuries ruined his career,he was amazing with old ball especially reverse swing in subcontinent conditions although was excellent with the new ball as well in all conditions. We were lucky enough to see him perform and consistently from 2007 - 2011.
Instrumental in India's win overseas at England,NZ and even that drawn series in South Africa and remains an unsung hero of India's 2003 and victorious 2011 WC campaign.

I don't think this era is low on talent. The following points are based on my personal experience. Thing is, we watched all those players when they were all established and already playing at their peak. This is for players like Dravid, Ponting, Kallis, etc. Whenever they used to come out there used to be huge stats that we saw of those players. And for the earlier players whom we didn't watch much, we always heard of them how wonderful they were from the articles, stats, etc. My father always says how Gavaskar was so good for India. It was like we always heard them as legends.

For the current gen players we have seen them right from the start of their careers. We know their strengths and weaknesses. Plus with the technology playing such a huge role nowadays we are also a bit harsh on these players as even their minor flaws are exposed. I know there isn't the same feel watching say a Kohli or a Smith bat as there was when say a Sachin or a Ponting would bat. But maybe that is only because we grew watching them bat and not these guys. I think the kids who have recently started watching Cricket will have the same thing for Kohli/Smith/Root/Williamson when they grow up.

Would you pick any of the players listed in an all time 12?
