Random Thoughts

Yea tutorials are intense. Working my way up from single engine right now, jets seem so far away but it will be worth it knowing how to fly them properly. Tried to take off a 747 and lets just say it did not end too well :(

It gets a lot easier. 737 is the easiest to learn in jets. Flaps create a bigger surface area of wing, thus, allowing the plane to take-off and stay in the air at a lower speed because it generates more lift. Check the kneeboard - (f10) for the recommended flap speeds in an aircraft. Typically, taking off use 5 flaps on 737 and 30-40 landing.

You'll soon be using the GPS to find the ILS frequency for an airports runway, putting it into the nav stack and letting the autopilot land for you.

It's ashame Microsoft stopped the multiplayer :(

Get yourself a decent joystick!

fearsome tweak me I'm a geek.

Finally someone bit on my flight sim bait!

I am no wear close to jets yet mate, still doing the private pilot tutorials. I am basically planning small flights within Texas (with ad on scenery its very realistic) and using proper ATC and aviation rules to complete them.

Biggest problem I am having is controlling the plane while taxiing and finding out where to go once I have landed, ATC says to go to X hanger using X Taxiway but there are no marking anywhere!

What is a good step up from the single engine cessna? I want something capable of longer distance flights, my plane starts to run out of fuel the moment I leave Texas.

Found a great flight sim forum but its mostly real private/commercial pilots and they are not to keen on helping newbies :(

There are soooooo many ad ons for this game its unbelievable.

ahhhh! i love most of the simulator games. be it rollercoaster, Flight simulator, railroad, restaurant etc.

my fav bit on the flight simulator was of course landing the 747 successfully. ;)
been years since i played this.

@Mark - IIRC, the airport tower window / console has an option of marking the taxiway ??

If it does then I am unaware.

Only communication I have with ATC is requesting clearance for take off, landing and entering airspace. Its all done with the ` key.

Are you using the keyboard to fly/taxi? If so that's always going to be difficult. The best advice with that is too get a joystick with rudder twist (the joystick twists so you can use the rudder).

I managed to get one of these free as an apology from Saitek for 2 previous broken joysticks. But there are some really good cheap ones at ?20-?30.
Saitek X52 Hotas Flight Controller System Joystick (PC): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

If you do have a joystick - try turning the sensitivity down of the axis if you have it high.

With ATC you can select progressive taxi (number 3), which, if you bring up a spot view in a new window, will show you where you need to go to reach the gates (pink lines). The other option (If you want to be super real) is downloading the airport charts from each airport - not something I've ever considered personally. You can find them on-line if you google.

Planes wise - That's tricky. I'd suggest having a go in the Mooney Bravo - which is quicker and I believe has a bigger range. Learjet is also a good step - but if your not ready for jets, I'd stick to the Mooney Bravo.

Avsim is your best bet for add-ons. Quite easy to get used to installing that stuff (just moving stuff into different folders), they all normally have good instructions.

BTW - New "Microsoft FLight" coming out in the next 2 years (Microsoft had closed the studio that makes Flight Sim in 2008). Has multi player too.

One more tip - With jets - if your finding it hard to get used to it - put realism down. You'll soon get used to it and be able to move the realism up.

How do I open a new window?

Im using FS2004 with a keyboard. Still have not gotten the joystick.

Thanks for all the tips man, I think I might make a new thread for this and pick your brain a bit more.

Will look into the progressive taxi as soon as I figure out how to open a new window.

Yeah that's kl - Or PM me. Open a new view by going into the top toolbar (whilst in game mode) "display" and it should be marked "new view(s)", or I believe you can right click and select "new view".

Don't you love it when a cop purposely avoids giving you a fine. Especially when he says "This car doesn't sound right" and reaches in and turns your music up as loud as it goes. Small town cops are awesome.

Inbetweeners is pretty good. Thanks for the tip Mark. Watched the first 3 episodes. Initially I thought it was just going to be mindless child humour, but the jokes are actually quite clever. On to episode 4...

Check out Peep Show, it's way better and I reckon it's probably right up your alley. Just read the quote in my "welcome box" on my profile. To me that sounds like something you would say :laugh

As if Mark's taking the credit for it...
