Schweinsteiger Joins Real Madrid

Real Madrid have continued on their shopping spree with the signing of up and coming German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. Schweinsteiger, the 21 year old with 20 international caps, joins the club from Bayern Munich for a reported transfer fee of ?14 million.

"I am absolutely delighted to have joined Real Madrid, this is a great opportunity for myself to develop as a player. Obviously the chance to play with some of the biggest names in football is a major attraction for any young footballer. The big signings Guus has made during his time here allready (Steven Gerrard and Fabio Cannavaro) have been really impressive."
Schweinsteiger said on his arrival at the Bernabau.

Real Madrid assistant coach Paulo Campos spoke to the media on behalf of the team at the arrival of Schweinsteiger, who has opted to join the squad immediately in an attempt to play in the clubs next warm up match against Nice on Tuesday 26th of July.

"Its great to have Bastian here at the club. He has allready proven that he is a quality player throughout his time at Bayern aswell as his performances in the German national team. Bastian just gives us another option on both the left and right flanks."

The three signings of Steven Gerrard, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Fabio Cannavaro all arrived and settled into camp in Lille. The first training session with the trio involved was a light run after the teams 4-0 thumping of Lille the previous day. By his own standards, Ronaldo has under performed so far on tour, and worked hard in both the fitness and shooting department. However he will have to improve greatly if he is to manage to find a spot in the starting 11.

July 21, 2005

The team spent the first part of the morning travelling from Lille to Nice, with the final match of the French tour on the 26th. On arrival in Nice, the squad was given the rest of the day to tour the town and rest their bodies from the gruelling training over the past 2 weeks. Hiddink himself spent some time with senior players over a dinner.

July 22, 2005

After the rest day the players again came back to the training paddock. The defence spent alot of time to themselves working on tactics while the midfield focused primarily on passing skills. The attackers again worked on speed and shooting.

July 23 & 24, 2005

Training took on a much more unified approach. The group training as a unit in both fitness and tactical work. Gerrard, Schweinsteiger and Cannavaro have appeared to settle in nicely and the team mood has lifted along with the intensity in the training.

Schweinsteiger is the ideal signing as Zidane is nearing the end of his career, and will be a good replacement for the Frechman. Although I must say that Zizou is simple irreplacable!

Argentina Win Gold Cup

A 5th minute strike from Fernando Cavenaghi was enough to take Argentina to victory in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in America today. Cavenaghi, also voted player of the series and golden boot winner for his outstanding return of 9 goals in only 5 games, chipped over Mexican keeper Sanchez to hand Argentina the title 1-0.

Adriano Joins Chelsea

English heavyweights Chelsea FC have signed Inter Milan striker Adriano on a ?36 million transfer fee. The star Brazlian powerhouse forward has been the glamour clubs only signing of the off season, but the biggest in two months of transfer activity. The signing equals that of Steven Gerrard to Real Madrid only a week early, and adds further strike power to a team allready boasting Hernan Crespo, Eidur Gudjohsen and Didier Drogba.

A quieter training day was arranged for the squad ahead of our final match against Nice. After a day spent mainly on light fitness, Guus went over a potentially new tactic he wishes to trial in the final game. It appears evident that the three new signings of Schweingsteiger, Gerrard and Cannnavaro will all start in their first match in wearing the famous whites of Madrid.

All three have settled in nicely since joining the camp, the allready strong relationship between English international's Gerrard and David Beckham has been evident and their combinations appear to be working well.

The Teams:


Lille: Frederic Antonetti begins the match with a defensive 5-3-2 formation using wing backs Bisconti and Echouafni to attack from deep on the flanks. Roudet will have a crucial role to play in the midfield as the home side looks to play on the counter attack to break down Real Madrid

Real Madrid: Guus Hiddink uses the arrival of Fabio Cannavaro to change to 3-5-2 formation, Cannavaro completes a very talented back three with Roberto Carlos and Jonathan Woodgate which allows for a more attacking formation. Steven Gerrard comes into the side and partners Graverson in the defensive midfield role while Schweinsteiger occupies the left midfield position, allowing Beckham to stay on the right. Zidane is given the free roaming attacking midfield role. Cassano edges out Robinho to start next to Raul.
