Retirements Thread - Heinrich Klaasen and Glenn Maxwell (ODIs)

Bye bye Glenn Maxwell

Played the most important knock vs Afghanistan in CWC 2023, without which, Australia wouldn't have made the semi-finals.

I wanted to see him play against us in december but I guess it's not going to happen :crying:

Maxwell finishes with 149 ODIs and two ODI World Cup titles a true legend all-rounder

Maxwell was one of those players I was always genuinely excited to watch, from the beginning of his career to the end. That double hundred in the WC will forever be remembered as one of the best ODI knocks in history. I would have been more than happy to see him go at it for a few more years but I'm still satisfied with what we got from him. An impact player through and through. Farewell, the big show.

Klaasen retiring at his peak is insane. Wish he'd stuck around for the home World Cup in 2027
Surprised he hasn't at least stuck around for the next T20 World Cup in less than a year.

Wouldn't be surprised if one of the IPL teams has tapped him up on a some kind of regular deal.

Maxi I understand he has been waxing and waning for about the majority of the last 10 years. Some spells he looks like the most dangerous batter alive and can even be handy 5th/6th bowler. Then a few months later you are wondering where his next run is coming from.

Klaasen just spawned out of nowhere, I remember him being a bit part backup SA wicketkeeper who was ok but not awe-inspiring, then poof he was suddenly just the best white ball batter in the world seemingly overnight.

Maxi's career was incredible, but such a shame he didn't give himself a better chance in red ball cricket. The hundred he scored against India proved he mentally had the ability to reign it in, knock the ball around, survive the tough stuff (think his first boundary was off his 80th ball). Type of bloke and player you always wanted to see succeed, but was his own worst enemy at times.

Has the best knock in ODI history and 2 World Cups under his belt though. You'd take that career I reckon.

I admit the surprising element being that he has entirely pulled the plug- T20- could have gone out on a high OR attempted to. Plus, he is just 33! Lot of cricket left in him. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Proteas make an appeal to him next year- one final hurrah, on the grounds he knows well by now!

He is already on GBP 2Million from SRH. That is the official figure though- Not sure if these teams can pay under the table to ensure that Klaasen turns out for the Sunrisers across the globe.

Klaasen's retirement is surprising but not totally unexpected imo. We live in the era where T20 leagues and million dollar contracts mean more than playing for one's nation with the exception of India obviously. And other cricket boards need to accept this reality rather than remain rigid over old values.

Once players get established they will undoubtedly look for greener pastures. CSA ought to have followed the WI/NZ template to let him pick and choose between ICC tournaments. What you're left with now in the end is a dumbass taskmaster coach and one less world class player. This attitude already cost them ABd, QDK and Klaasen, and perhaps will the next such player who goes on to make a name for himself in the T20 format.
