Retirements Thread - R. Ashwin

Very surprised that he chose to shut the door on his ODI career. I always got the impression that he was more suited towards ODIs and Tests and that T20 was probably not his forte.

Got a feeling that we will be seeing more players follow suit in the near future, implying that ODIs as a format is on the wane.

Nonetheless, a significant loss for ECB. Players like him don't come by easy.

I felt Stokes was someone who came in as a middle order slogger who had some muscular abilities to hit the long ball only to realise that it was a myth and he was more than capable as a batter who can actually build the innings. His peak in the limited overs actually came when he toured India in 2016/17 and he carried that form into the Champions Trophy which unfortunately England lost in the Semis. He played his slowest ODI innings against India in 2018 series playing at Nottingham. But that did not stop him from winning the World Cup Final for England.

I felt he always did well in Tests as compared to ODIs & T20Is. I think his 99 at Pune batting at no.3 would come as one of his most destructive innings of all time in ODIs.

Possibly if Kallis belonged to the previous generation, Stokes belongs to my generation (late 90s/early 00's kids). A genuine all-rounder with some real capabilities! Hopefully there are more years of him as a Test Cricketer now!

Ah! It's just painful to see my favourite format of Cricket die like this with genuine players missing out/retiring!! :crying:

It makes no sense to quit T20's for Stokes as it is a format that will dominate international sport, with all the franchise leagues. And also it is much shorter in duration than ODI's and also fits a big hitter like Stokes. Those who retire from T20's first before ODI's, are probably guys whose gameplay is likely not suited for the shortest format.

ODI's are definitely on the wane. If it needs relevance, bilateral should be scrapped and triangular/quadrangular tournaments should make a comeback. Same with bilateral T20's. But the best option would be to scrap ODIs and make the T20 World Cup as the showpiece event that happens once every 4 years. More countries can participate on a format like this, and cricket expands.

Cricket needs players like Ben Stokes.

Their passion for game is unmatched.

Mental and Physical toll sometimes can be too much to take.

Wishing him the Best in both Tests and T20s, hope he flourishes in this new era of English Cricket in Tests.

Shocked by the Stokes news.
Honestly I'm somewhat shocked people are shocked.

He's been having mental and physical problems for years from the workload, and has recently taken on extra workload in the Test team. Buttler said the white-ball captaincy was pretty incompatoble with a red-ball career so I'm not surprised the same is true in reverse.

Plus, Stokes is a big team man. Bowing out now hopefully gives the team time to reshape its middle-order and for people to learn their roles ahead of the World Cup next year.

I also expect him to retire from T20Is after this year's WC, assuming they call on him

Lendl Simmons has also retired from International cricket

It's a shame that many people will remember him as the 2021 version, because for about a 5-6 year stretch he was bossing t20s and also won games for WI as recently as 2020

Retired on Carlos Brathwaite 's birthday.

Okay, after having a look at Twitter and this place, I have a slightly different take on Ben Stokes' retirement.

Much is being said about how the ODI format has lost relevance. Come on no! You can't simply attribute it to the retirement of one player. Agreed that this guy was instrumental in winning plaudits for his team and also for the CWC 2019 triumph. However, his loss isn't going to bring the downfall of ODI cricket.

All it takes for ODIs to become of somewhat consequence - a couple of thrillers. We have seen the same happen in Test cricket as well. If you go 4-5 tests without a results/ one-sided result, all of you are going to start predicting the death of the format.

What many are forgetting is that the man took a mental health break from all formats recently. I am sure had he been appointed the limited overs captain, he might have given up on Test cricket. I find @Aislabie thought process as spot on in this case.

What you're forgetting is there's too much of T20 being played these days. I, for one, am not a big fan of watching the IPL games day in and day out on a regular basis. Stokes quitting ODIs surprises many cause not a lot of players quit the shorter formats before the longer ones. Stokes' game has been more suited to ODI and T20-am guessing the captaincy played a big part here.

I also do not agree with the ODI on the wane theory. Just cause they aren't being played at this stage wouldn't make them irrelevant. All teams are trying to put their best foot forth for the WT20 -as there's an equal chance that anyone on their day can win. The last 2 years have seen back to back WT20s and that hasn't boded well for everyone (plus Covid)

The quadrangular/ triangular tournaments makes sense. I agree to making the WT20 a 4 year event as opposed to the current 2 year one. However, scrapping the ODI is not something I'd vote for. To get more context- scrap the non-existent CT and replace it with the ICC Knockout. That's how you will engage the audience here.

Furthermore, I see 3 main concerns for the ICC here (might not be apt for this thread, but anyway)
  1. Test cricket is increasingly one sided and ability to expand doesn't exist.- apart from the top sides, the others cannot simply compete. The ICC ought to simply keep the marquee series and let go of the rest. To try and make it a tad contextual, bring in a Tiered system
  2. Regulate the cricket leagues- Too many free agents in the market. Regulation of leagues is essential. I am sure it will never go the FIFA way, however, they need to bring it reforms that help regulation
  3. Cricket is being marketed to all audiences as a vanilla product.- the audiences for each product are different. Purists of cricket who prefer Test matches cannot be wooed with the slam bang treatment that is is getting via Bazball. Similarly, ODI and T20 serve a different purpose and the sooner boards understand this, the better.

I am really surprised that Ben Stokes would retire from ODI when the world cup is next year.
He probably cant be bother with ODI anymore but I really think he is great in ODI, England is going to find it hard to replace him in ODI.

Now Lendl Simmons Retired From international Cricket
:facepalm2:

That innings he played in 2016 WT20 semis against us will always remember that.

Was quite lucky on that day dismissed on No ball twice that too of spinners and a couple of drop catch as well.

Made his mark playing in T20s.

Agree! Lendl Simmons and that WT20 semi-final. That apart, I actually do not have any memory of him turning and playing a match winning innings.

Pretty strong statement this, from Ben Stokes! I know he is risking himself being criticized for choosing T20's because of the lucrative money from franchise leagues, and not prioritizing nation over money. But I still like the fact that he sheds light on the insane scheduling that has taken over world cricket today. More early retirements coming, and maybe the administrators will just accept it as the 'norm of life'.
