Sound/volume icon disappearing

My sound/volume icon has disappeared from the taskbar (or whatever the little thing with all the icons is down the bottom) and I can't remember how to get it back. It's not as simple as properties then ticking it, because it is grayed out. Anyone able to help?

What caused the problem? Could be helpful if you post here, so that other users facing a similar problem might find a simple solution.

That happens to me sometimes. The taskbar crashes and I have to close it lol, then it comes back up and the sound is gone. I just go to control panel>sound and it comes back.
