Strange case of Ashwell Prince

I say keep Prince in the test team, drop JP and let him focus on the short form of the game until a regains some sort of form and then re-introduce him when he's ready into the test team. Players have worked JP out and he needs to work on it.

We will have to wait and see. JP has Smith's and kallis's backing. Smith also now has a vote on the squad so there is a pretty good chance that they will stick with jp like they did with ab and kallis when they had similiar issues. Another factor that helps jp is that he is a decent second spinner.

Disagree with JP not being able to become a great test batsman, you don't average 50 in first class cricket if you can't play. To put it in perspective only other guy to do that in SA domestic cricket is kallis. Yes the kid has issues but those can and should be solved.
A great first class average doesn't set a good Test career in stone. It means he'll get chances to perform, but not unlimited ones. Whatever the reasons, sometimes players just don't make the most of their chances. He hasn't exactly made himself invaluable to the Test side yet, so it's still a possibility that must be considered.

Who else can stake a claim if both players are dropped? Mind you JP's test career parallels a certain Phillip Hughes. JP definitely needs time in the domestic game. I wouldn't discard Prince just yet considering the experience, injury time and possibly lack of match practice (doesn't play limited overs does he?).

I'd be most shocked if they kept both of them, although it wouldn't be the first time they put the racial quota above team performance.

Dean Elgar and Jacquess Rudolph(If he makes himself available again) are the best options the others are too young. All of rillee rossouw, dave miller, jonathan vandiar and colin ingram aren't ready for the test arena.
