The fast bowler Shaun Tait will miss Australia's limited-overs matches in India this month and at home against Sri Lanka in November after having surgery on his right elbow. Tait is expected to be out of action until at least early December, which also leaves his World Cup hopes in doubt as the squad will be announced later that month.

"Shaun Tait underwent corrective elbow surgery this afternoon for a chronic elbow complaint and his return to cricket will be determined by the speed of his recovery from surgery," Cricket Australia's doctor Trefor James said. "It is not anticipated he will be able to play within the next two months."

He can all but kiss good bye to a spot in the ODI WC team now. Such a shame as he was looking good in his recent ODI stint.

Oh sheesh. He is such an exciting bowler to watch. I would have loved to see him bowl at sehwag and Sachin. But this is the cost of bowling this fast.

As TumTum said, he isn't that big a loss. Especially in this series, I think he would have struggled really. The flat pitches and the quality of Indian batting.

^A bowler as quick as tait does not depend a lot on conditions. In fact indian conditions would have suited his style of bowling as the ball reverses quite early there.

He just tries to bowl fast with no brains. Once a batsman is successful in putting pressure on him, he tends to lose his line and length. With Sehwag at the top and given his style of play, I'm sure that would have been the case many times.

^Every fast bowler is bound to spray it around at times. I am sure Australian bowling attack looks weaker without a 150 KPH bowler who can reverse it.

It weakens their bowling line up, true. But, he is more vulnerable to 'spray it around' than many other fast bowlers.

He bowls more wides and no balls than other bowlers. I agree with User, it won't make a big difference, especially because they have a lot of backup options, like Clint Mckay, Nannes, Bollinger.

The thing with Tait is that he doesn't have to think too much to begin with. He has pace, he gets good reverse swing, all he has to focus on is using the old ball well and bowling full and straight towards the end of the innings. He has a good bouncer and a decent slower ball too. In rhythm he can be extremely destructive at the end of an innings.

Think of him has a less-consistent but faster Malinga.

Did you watch him during last years IPL in India? A bowler that just bowls fast without trying to trick the batsman with some different deliveries will always struggle in India. Tait would have struggled in India so its not a big loss for the WC. Harris is a much better option and hopefully he recovers.

He is not less consistent but way more less consistent than Malinga. Will do wonders in a match but then followed by an extreme drought.

Completely agree. Once a batsman like Sehwag gets going then hardly any bowler is able to stop him and a bowler like Tait, who if gets smashed for few boundaries, looses his line and length. Obviously wasn't going to do anything special if he would have came to India for test matches.
