TAOC Commentators!

How will people audition? By reciting a few lines? And how will it be recorded?
What I did was start commentating on a match that was on TV, it is much more natural that way (which will best show your talent). Just plug a microphone in to your PC and then use some sound recording software (I would recommend Audacity) to get it recorded. Then save it as something that isn't a WAV file. A simple way is to import it into iTunes and then right click on it in the library and click Convert Selection to ..., where ... is either AAC or MP3, it shouldn't matter which at this stage. Audacity has built in options for saving as OGG (which will play in VLC) and you can get plugins to make it save as MP3. No one wants to download 100mb for a few minutes of you talking and it might harm your chances.

Something else I'd like to mention, this isn't for 'putting on' accents, speak in your natural voice.

Ha ha. That'd be a problem for us Aussies. Because we have no cricket on at the moment! :p
Oh, I guess we could chuck in a DVD.

I suppose I could try. Im from New Zealand and that might be a bit different. Though I have no idea if my voice would sound good as a commentator.

thats why the audition ! mate..even if you have a ordinary microphone..
its fine. just record some commentary you would see on TV or imagine some
scenario yourself and send us a sample ;)

im a sound recording engineer so if anybody wants any information on recording software just PM me,
also it has to be said

NEVER!!!!!!! record ANYTHING!!!!!!!! as an MP3, AAC or any other type of lossy codec!
record as either wav or aiff, then convert the file to mp3 or aac when your going to upload it. trust me, it will sound much clearer (also never use any mp3 less than 320kbps).

I've never seen a program for sound recording that does record straight to a lossy format. As for MP3s under 320kbps, for the commentary it will be much lower, for multiple reasons: the human voice has a much lower frequency range (as opposed to music), size and the fact mp3 won't be used in the game itself.

I'd be happy to give it a crack as soon as I can find my microphone.

sonar can record to lossy, and apparently so can pro tools 7 (i use 6.9)
what format is going to be used in the game?

I'm going to take a wild guess that someone using software like that to do commentary samples in will have their head around not recording to lossy.

Probably OGG Vorbis, but I'm looking at Speex.

you could use FLAC as well if your useing open source OGG stuff, i think its the only lossless one and is still pretty small

I'll see how big the difference is between a high quality ogg and flac, but I still think that lossless isn't required for voice (but voice can compressed by lossless very well)

Well I am a pro commentator at AFL, so cricket shouldn't be too hard. I'll record a sample some time tonight, and I don't sound like a stupid kid either. Plus I have a great Australian accent.

Any need for an American commentator? Haha.

Actually, looks like you don't have any Indian commentators. I can also pull off a pretty good West Indian accent if you don't get any in that regard. I'll see if I can record some stuff while watching the India-Lions game today.

If you want the game to be realistic, you would have to get some Arun Lal into it, eh?
