I dont know who id chose, Enlgand were undefeated but then lost a few days ago to South Africa (although that was 05). Also, Australia won on the subcontinent, not the easiest thing to do, and whitewashed the pakistan series recently. Then when you look at Enlgand beating 6, 7 and 8. They have however made a lot of progress since the Ashes in 02-03....
I would say Australia with England 0.01 points behind on a scale of 1-10, Aus being at 9.5.

Australia at their usual unbeatable, that's to be expected.

But England going unbeaten in 2004 is an amazing achievment for a team so often prone to collapsing and lacking backbone. They've really improved, Fletcher has done a great job inserting an Australia like discipline into the team.

Aussies will still win the Ashes though, far too strong.

Aus=1st
Eng=2nd
Pak=3rd
India=4
West Indies=5th

but i`ll quote wasim akram that england has got the power to become world no 1

Even though England had been undefeated throughout year 2004, I think Australia's feat of 5 series wins, and winning against India in India puts them ahead of England. That might be my Aussie bias coming out though :)
