The British Super League Season I is an upcoming debut season of the British Super League (BSL), established by the England and Wales Cricket Board. A ODI and T20 tournament is held. It will be staged annually between nine domestic teams from England and Wales along with a representative team from minor counties called Unicorns XI. The ODI format is sponsored by Hardy's and the T20 one is sponsored by Etihad.

ODI History

The first top level one day competition was introduced by ECB known as "The First Class Knock Out Competition for the Gillette Cup". The competition was replaced by the ECB Pro 40 competition from the 2010 season. The ECB40 which was a forty-over again resulted in utter failure. The Royal London One-Day Cup began in 2014 as a replacement for the ECB 40. The number of overs was again increased to 50 to bring the competition in line with One Day Internationals. At the ICC WC 2015 a string of disappointing results happened including the team failing to advance from the group stage. Thus this league will be focusing on the development of the nation in the limited overs format.

T20 History

When the Benson & Hedges Cup ended in 2002, the England and Wales Cricket Board needed another one-day competition to fill its place. The cricketing authorities were looking to boost the game's popularity with the younger generation in response to dwindling crowds and reduced sponsorship. It was the first Twenty 20 Cup held in 2003 and was marketed with the slogan “I don’t like cricket, I love it”. By the end of the 2009 Twenty 20 Cup, the ECB had decided to implement a larger competition for the Twenty 20 format of the game. In May, before the Twenty20 season began, the England cricket team were crowned world Twenty 20 champions at the 2010 ICC World Twenty 20 competition in the West Indies. As national interest in the Twenty20 format new Friends Provident t20 cricket league competition was established. The NatWest T20 Blast replaced the Friends Life T20 competition, which has won in maximum attendance but lost in nation’s development. So another league was needed to focus on development of T20 cricket and hence BSL was established.
