I've used it three times outside of this thread and all of those were legitimate English usages, not just using the word "dire" for the hell of it.

Looks a pretty dire situation for India right now. I just hope this pitch lasts. Harbhajan and Kumble seem to be largely toothless. I'm hoping that it's because the Aussie batsmen came with plans against them rather than the fact that they have just sucked.

I would be happy if someone stood up and forced them to recognize the ICL and promised dire circumstances in the case that they did not comply (such as boycotts).

Must be a dire situation that requires you to bowl, then.

What Sohum means is that he used it when the time called for it and therefore the use was 'legitimate.' Whereas a lot of people incessantly use the term 'dire' in place of basically every 'negative' word in the English vocabulary, therefore it becomes (In Sohum Speak) 'illegitimate' .

But, yeah, just head over to CW and you'll notice dire being almost every other word. I mean... since when have threads, members, opinions, etc. been dire? At CW, dire is almost the only adjective used.

i am stage 4, i think. but then again, i dont think that stage #1 never happened to me. b/c i remember those days. like it says 're-emergence, encouraged by sporadic positive comments from established members but mostly unregarded'
