Trans Tasman Premier League

What a game! The batsman were good to set us up, and the bowlers started off well.

The Giants gave me a scare with their last ten over surge, but we held em off!

Good game Hedger! It looks like our trade has gone well for both of us, all four players were good :D

Bond and Guppers were on fire for Auckland.
At least they did NZ proud, unlike my boys...

Covvy and Troy’s Weekly Wrap Up - Round 1
Division 1
Newcastle Giants def by Melbourne Magic by 8 runs
The Magic had a good start to their innings with a healthy run rate but nobody could manage to relish from good starts. As wickets still steadily flowed, the run rate began to go down and some good bowling towards the end of the innings, Melbourne could only get a below par score. The Giants batting was going down the same path as Melbourne’s, but the wickets became a bit more frequent and Newcastle got into some trouble. Despite a good partnership between Noffke and Sarwan getting the Giants back into the match, they just fell short.

Southern Sharks def Sydney Stallions by 3 wickets
The Stallions had a reasonable start, but once the two openers fell, nobody could really get going towards a big total. But some fire power by Quiney helped the run rate up a bit and a good cameo by Dhoni supported by the late middle order helped Sydney post a good total of 237, especially after been sent it. The Sharks started shaky, losing two wickets early on but a sensational partnership by their two marquee batsmen, Taylor and Kallis, in which they scored a massive 130 runs together to obliterate any hope for the Stallions despite losing 3 wickets in 2 overs. Eventually no mass collapse happened and the Sharks won it comfortable.

Auckland Lions def by West Coast Wizards by 5 wickets
The Lions had a shaky start, losing a wicket second ball. With wickets falling constantly and nobody really getting a high score, Auckland posted a measly target. Right from the start of their innings, the Wizards looked home. Adam Gilchrist showed he still can bat by getting a brilliant half-century. And that was more than enough to give West Coast a comfortable victory.

Brisbane Braves def Gold Coast Panthers by 5 wickets
The Panthers started brightly, but wickets at annoying stages cost them big time as whenever a partnership started, it would soon fall. But a solid innings of a run-a-ball 66 by Aaron O’Brien and good finish gave Gold Coast a very reasonable score. Brisbane dominated straight away in their innings. Graeme Smith and Callum Ferguson produced a match-winning 124 partnership to give the Braves a strong position. Without any disaster, Brisbane mowed down the runs comfortable in a great batting display.

North Queensland Firebirds def Canberra Crunchy Nuts by 2 runs
The Firebirds started pretty average, losing a few wickets but still keeping the run rate up. But Crunchy Nuts bowled brilliantly to restrict North Queensland’s run rate. That added pressure and the result were constant wickets. The Firebirds finished steadily to post a par score. The Nuts started carefully, going at around three an over. But once Phil Hughes got in a bit more, the run rate began to creep up. When Haddin joined in with Hughes with a quick fire innings, the Nuts got the upper hand. But Haddin then Hughes fell in consecutive overs, it was going to be close. But a brilliant second last over by Tsotsobe left the Nuts with needing 14 off the last over. But it was asking too much of the batsmen as they fell 2 runs short.

Division 2
TTPL Div 2 Rnd 1- Adelaide Athletic v Wellington Thunderbolts at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide

Adelaide Athletic started well, winning the toss and electing to bat on an excellent pitch. Adelaide looked the goods at the start of the innings, but fell away quickly, with the only batsman showing any sign of resistance being David Hussey, who ended on a solid 78. That ended up as the highest score for Adelaide, while the second highest score was a mere 26 by the spinner Jason Krejza. The West Indian all-rounder, Dwayne Bravo starred for Wellington with the ball, managing 4 wickets off his 8 overs, whilst Andrew Hall, Chris Martin and Nathan McCullum supported him with the ball, grabbing 3,2 and 1 wicket(s) respectively. Only posting 177/10 off 35 overs proved to be tough to defend.

Solid batting by Marcus Trescothick (75 not out), Jesse Ryder (34) and Kane Williamson (65 not out), proved to be unstoppable, giving the Wellington Thunderbolts a very convincing win, and a perfect way to start off the new season of the TTPL.

Final Result- Wellington Thunderbolts won by 9 wickets (with 140 balls remaining).

TTPL Div 2 Rnd 1- Geelong Vanishers vs Central Stags at Kardinia Park, Geelong

This match proved to be another low-scoring affair, which was becoming a common occurrence in the TTPL. The Geelong Vanishers won the toss and elected to bat on a poor pitch, and started off disappointingly, with their star international, Kevin Pietersen, going for a golden duck in the second ball of the innings. Matthew Hayden and Dominic Thornley settled the ship, before ‘Haydos’ fell for 33, and Thornley fell for a well-deserved 66 when he got run-out by superb fielding by Chris Gayle. After that,
Geelong never recovered, and lost their batsmen for not many runs, giving them a total of just 174 all out in their 46 overs, a very disappointing effort. The wickets were evenly spread for the Central Stags, with Monty Panesar, Jon Holland and Daniel Christian getting 2 wickets each, whilst Brett Lee and Angelo Matthews got just the one wicket.

Chasing 174 runs proved to be an easy task for the Stags, as Chris Gayle and Tatenda Taibu, batted solidly, taking the game out of Geelong`s hands.Chris Gayle then fell for 44 after getting bowled by Luke Doran, soon after his partner Taibu fell for a superb 66, falling once again to Doran, lbw. Travis Birt fell early for just 21 runs, once again to Doran, this time a caught-and-bowled. But nonetheless, good batting by North and Matthews gave the Stags a relatively easy win, and the Stags will be happy with the start they`ve got to the season.

Final Result- Central Stags won by 7 wickets (with 33 balls remaining).

TTPL Div 2 Rnd 1-Northern Knights vs Darwin Daredevils at Seddon Park

The Northern Knights won the toss and elected to bat on a ‘Normal’ pitch at SeddonPark, Hamilton. They started off poorly, losing Dilshan and Redmond for 13 and 10. Craig Cumming and Younis Khan were good with the bat, and give the Knights a little more momentum, before Cumming fell for a decent 36. Younis Khan fell soon after for 37. Hamish Marshall and BJ Waitling didn’t do much good, scoring 7 and 0. Slow but steady batting by Rob Nicol (29 off 82 balls) and Roelef van der Merwe (55 off 82 balls) gave the Knights a score of 200, the first score above 200 for the Division 2 season so far. The Tasmanian medium-pacer, Luke Butterworth was great with the ball, getting 3 top-order wickets, whilst spin king Shane Warne managed 2 wickets, and West Indian quickie, Fidel Edwards was the only other wicket-taker with one wicket.

Darwin started strongly in its mission to chase 200, as Simon Katich and Joe Denly, started the innings solidly for the Daredevils, as Katich made 41 before getting out, and Denly managed a healthy 51. Glen Batticciotto, was 4 runs short of his half-century, and finished the innings 46 not out, and despite Yuvraj Singh and Graham Manou getting out cheaply, Darwin managed to chase the hardly competitive total with 9 overs to spare. There was no major wicket-takers for the Knights, with Rob Nicol, Mark Gillespie and Iain O` Brien the only bowlers to take a wicket.

Final Result- Darwin Daredevils won by 6 wickets (with 42 balls remaining).

TTPL Div 2 Rnd 1-Napier Crushers vs Hobart Heroes at McLean Park, Napier

The Hobart Heroes won the toss for their first match of the season, and elected to bat on an excellent pitch. They had a shaky start, losing wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakarra for just 1 in the first over. Soon after, Michael Di Venuto scored a quick 35 off 21 balls before getting out to Pattinson lbw. Mohammed Yousuf looked solid but fell for 43, after a brilliant effort by Pattinson in the field to force the run-out. Michael Hussey and Rhett Lockyear didn’t do much good, and George Bailey was left with the tailenders to bat with. He batted solidly with 41, before getting out by Kyle Mills.
Hobart looked in dire straits, losing wickets regularly after that, but superb batting by Graham Onions (21) at the end gave Hobart a respectable 203. Kyle Mills was the star of the bowlers with 4 wickets for Napier, with Mason, Pattinson and Sehwag the only other wicket-takers with one.

Defending 203 will also be hard, but Hobart definitely put up a challenge, getting wicket regularly. They got Sehwag and James Marshall for 36 and 26, and Rahul Dravid and Neil Broom didn’t do much good either with 21 and 22 respectively. Sourav Ganguly got out for just 5, hardly anything to write home about. Napier left the job to Matthew Bell and Luke Woodcock who batted solidly and steadily before Bell got out for 34. Luke Woodcock and Brandon Hinni finished the job for Napier, giving them their first win of the season with 10 balls to spare. Brendan Drew and Xavier Doherty were the only multiple wicket-takers for Hobart, whilst Jerome Taylor and Graham Onions took one each.

Final Result: Napier Crushers won by 4 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 2 Rnd 1-Perth Powerhitters vs Christchurch Crocs at W.A.C.A Ground, Perth

The away side Christchurch won the toss and decided to bat first on an excellent pitch at the WACA, and started strongly with New Zealand duo Peter Fulton reaching 50 before getting out, and Brendon McCullum getting 30 runs under his belt before he got dismissed. Shivnarine Chanderpaul didn’t do anything at all with the bat, as he got out for a golden duck. Misbah ul Haq and Corey Anderson were decent with the bat, scoring 20 and 43, before they both got dismissed by Kulasekara. Grant Elliot got out for a measly 10 runs, but all-rounders James Franklin and Albie Morkel, builded on the total and made 29 and 22 respectively. The Crocs ended up with 9/241 off their 50 overs, the highest score from the Division 2 season so far this season. Nuwan Kulasekara and Mitchell Starc were the highlight of the bowlers, with 3 wickets each. Allan Wise, Praghyan Ohja and Michael Cranmer contributed with a wicket each.

Perth started shakily when Jayasuriya got out for a cheap nine. Shaun Marsh and Ajinkya Rahane were great with the bat, scoring 47 and 35 each. Usman Khawaja was even more impressive, scoring 77 off 85 balls, with his partner Tim Paine hitting a quick 44 off 42 balls. Michael Cramner only made 3, but Mitchell Starc and Nuwan Kulasekara finished the job for Perth, ensuring their first win with 8 overs to spare. Grant Elliot was great with the ball for Christchurch with 3 wickets, as so was Albie Morkel with 2 wickets and Chaminda Vaas with just the one wicket.

Final Result: Perth Powerhitters won by 4 wickets (with 47 balls remaining).

PS: I'll make sure to do the same style as Troy does it next time.

Great stuff with the wrap up. :)

I think it would be better if each summary was posted with the certain match, maybe biggy could PM you the scorecard first then you could write something about it before it's posted.

Doesn't really worry us, just whatever Biggy wants. I really need to step it up next week as Troy's writing was outstanding to say the least. He does all Div 2 matches and I do Div 1.
