Trans Tasman Premier League

A slow start to the run chase again but we came back strongly as Graeme Smith dominated with yet another century, can you believe it? I think I'm developing a fetish for South Africans, it was Dale Steyn last season who was lethal and now it's Graeme Smith! Every single time he gets us off to a great start on the run chase, this time he almost guided us home himself with a superb knock of 120. Took it easy at the start and then unleashed in the last 15 overs or so to get the required run rate down. Mark Boucher also dominated with an excellent half century that really got us through.. I love South Africans. :D

Callum Ferguson struggled in the pre-season but he's come good now, he's been very valuable with those innings of 80 that he makes now.. a superb choice for number 3. We have depth all the way down to number 8 as well, it doesn't matter if our top order failes, with the likes of Hopes, Simpson and Johnson... we can handle anything.

Props to the Sharks, they batted well, I thought when they were 5/180 or so they were going to struggle to post more than 250 but Flintoff and McGlashan really whacked us around. Zaheer Khan was superb though with 3/50, without him the Sharks might've posted 320+.

An excellent win, delighted to get off to such a great start this season.

Just reviewing some Brisbane Braves statistics.

We have an incredible tendency to bowl first, obviously the team feels we are better chasing. Since I took over the Braves, we have played a total of 26 matches, recording 19 victories and 7 losses.

Of these 26 matches, we have elected to bowl first 19 times. We have won 14 times bowling first, and lost 5. This is a handy ratio of 2.8 wins per loss when bowling first. When batting first, we have won 5 times and lost 2. This is a ratio of 2.5 wins per loss.

So we are narrowly a better side when bowling first, and the experience we have when chasing means it is normally a good sign when we win the toss and elect to field. ;)

Covvy and Troys Weekly Wrap Up - Round 2
Division 1
TTPL Div 1 Rnd 2- Canberra Crunchy Nut vs Southern Sharks at Manuka Oval

The Sharks had a poor start, losing two wickets inside the first five overs. Nobody really was stepping up much, no-one making much of some good starts. From all the wickets they lost, the Sharks could only limp home to score only 211 runs. No batsman got higher than 33 and thats a real problem for the Sharks. Dirk Nannes was the pick of the bowlers with 3/47.

The Nuts had a solid start to their innings, not letting the required run rate go up too far. But it was their next Don Bradman (or some think) Phillip Hughes who really blitzed the game. He was in red hot form as he made sure that Canberra could not lose. He hit a magnificent 107 not out which included fine stroke play and pure class. Along side with the little master, Sachin Tendulkar, who score a half-century they guided the Crunchy Nuts to a comfortable win.

Final Result- Canberra Crunchy Nuts won by 7 wickets (with 43 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 1 Rnd 2- North Queensland Firebirds vs Brisbane Braves at Cazalys Stadium

The Firebirds had the worst start possible, losing three wickets by the fifth over. And it didnt get much better with more wickets tumbling and getting themselves 6 wickets down after 18 overs. But a quick fire innings of 48 came from Steve Magoffin, very much a surprise. When he fell though, North Queensland couldnt really trouble the scoring much more as they fell all out in 35 overs for 161 runs. Mitchell Johnson bowled brilliantly for 31/4 and Umar Gul, Zaheer Khan and Chris Simpson all got two wickets a piece.

The Braves had a shaky beginning to their innings when Nick Jewell fell in the first over. However this just started the match-winning partnership between Graeme Smith and Callum Ferguson. Their partnership of 144 was more than enough to ensure victory to Brisbane. Smith scored 76 and Ferguson ended up unbeaten on 67.

Final Result- Brisbane Braves won by 7 wickets (With 133 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 1 Rnd 2- Gold Coast Panthers vs Newcastle Giants at Carrara Stadium

The Panthers had a solid start to their innings with a healthy run rate despite losing a few wickets. JP Duminy was on set for a century but fell on 65 thanks to a wonderful catch by Ramdin. However it was the power of Ravi Bopara that was the centre show of the innings. He hit 94 runs which included two huge sixes, but unfortunately he fell short of a well deserved century. But still, a good score was posted by the Panthers of 272.

The Giants innings started nicely with Michael Clarke been the guy to get out. Eventually they got him on 55 and the challenge looked to be a lot more harder for Newcastle now, needing over 6 an over with still 25 overs left. Ramdin and Cowan did try to keep the run rate high, but when they fell in consecutive overs, Newcastle ran out of fire power.

Final result- Gold Coast Panthers won by 5 runs

TTPL Div 1 Rnd 2- Melbourne Magic vs Auckland Lions at M.C.G

The Magic had a poor first five overs of their innings, losing both their openers in it. Shane Watson went on rebuilding Melbournes innings, but was losing partners quick. By the 22nd over, Magic was 95/6. But Watson finally found a partner in Hartley as they put on 86 runs. When Watson departed though there wasnt to much added to the total, Melbourne ending up on 227/9 with Shane Bond ripping through the batsmen, getting figures of 36/5.

Auckland started their innings quickly with the two openers playing very attacking. Soon Dippenaar brought up his fifty off just 33 balls. The carnage continued until Dippenaar was dismissed for 71 runs. But the Lions continued on their way to an easy victory, thanks to a patient knock of 95 by Guptill.

Final result- Auckland Lions won by 7 wickets (with 70 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 1 Rnd 2- Sydney Stallions vs West Coast wizards at S.C.G

It was a reasonable start for Sydney to their innings, however though that soon changed as Voges and Pujara put on a huge partnership of 118 at nearly a run a ball. But Pujara went for 80 and soon after that Voges went for 74. But MS Dhoni and Ryan ten Doeschate both got quick fire fifties to set a formidable target of 318.

The Wizards had a fantastic start to their innings, going at around 7.5 an over for the first 10. But when the main hitter, Gambhir, got caught for 57, the task seemed to get a lot harder for West Coast. However Ian Bell wasnt going to go down easy as he and Andrew Symonds kept the run rate going. When Roy departed for 41, the momentum swung back into the favor of the Stallions. Heartbreak happened for Ian Bell when he fell just one run short of a century due to a dodgy umpiring decision. But still they pushed on with Adam Gilchrist reaching a half-century, but unfortunately they fell just short despite only needing 16 off the last two overs.

Final result- Sydney Stallions won by 6 runs

Division 2
TTPL Div 2: Round 2- Wellington Thunderbolts v Northern Knights at Westpac Stadium, Wellington

The away side, Northern Knights, won the toss and elected to have a bat first. The openers, Sri Lankan Dilshan and Craig Cumming looked solid to start off the innings, before Dilshan got out to Bravo for just 28 off 42 balls. Craig Cummings didnt last long either, soon going out to the dangerous all-rounder, Dwayne Bravo once again. Aaron Redmond and Pakistani captain Younis Khan didnt do much good with the bat as well, scoring 12 and 15 respectively. Hamish Marshall got out cheaply for 8 after falling lbw to New Zealand quick bowler, Tim Southee not long after. BJ Waitling and Rob Nicol showed some resistance, but both fell after achieving starts, getting 31 and 20. Roelof van der Merwe and Mark Gillespie, not renowned for their batting, wasnt going to help Wellington achieve a big total either, scoring 16 and 10. Iain O`Brien quickly got run out by brilliance in the field by New Zealand team-mate, Chris Martin for just 4, leaving his partner Sreesanth not out with 1. Dwayne Bravo was the star with the ball with 3 wickets, whilst Andrew Hall and Chris Martin did well with 2 wickets. Ian Butler and Tim Southee managed one wicket each. The Knights were left with a cheap total of just 192 all out.

Chasing 192 was an easy task for the Thunderbolts, especially when they had aggressive batsmen such as Trescothick and Ryder opening the batting . Trescothick only managed 20, but Ryder smashed an astonishing 82 off 73 balls, proving what a great one-day player he is. Kane Williamson only got to 23 before getting bowled by fellow NZ team-mate Iain OBrien. Englishmen Eoin Morgan was great with the bat, scoring 43 off 94 balls not out, and despite Dwayne Bravo only getting 8 runs to his name, Andrew Hall was able to support Morgan with 11 not out, to give Wellington their second victory of the season. Iain O Brien was the only multiple wicket-taker with 2, and Mark Gillespie and Roelof van der Merwe were the only other wicket-takers with one each.

Final Result- Wellington Thunderbolts won by 6 wickets (with 112 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 2: Round 2- Hobart Heroes v Adelaide Athletic at Bellerive Oval, Hobart

Adelaide won the toss and elected to bat first on an excellent pitch. They struggled early, when the Tasmanian pace bowler Brett Geeves bowled with superb pace and line and length, to get through Gibbs, Wells and Robson for low scores, with 15, 4 and 8. No matter, this brought Tyson Henderson to the crease along with Vernon Philander. Philander didnt do great either only managing 9 runs. Henderson was going strongly and never seemed like getting out anytime soon. Daniel Smith did a good job with the bat, with the wicket-keeper batsman getting 31 runs to his name. Off-spinner Krejza managed 14 runs, another off-spinner, Suliemann Benn only managed 4 runs, not supporting Henderson. Ben Hilfenhaus and Henderson saw out the remaining overs, and were 95 not out and 13 not out at the end of the innings, leaving the Athletics at 215 / 7. Geeves was fantastic with the ball for Hobart with 3 wickets, Jerome Taylor was decent with 2 wickets whilst Doherty and Drew got 1 wicket each.

Hobart got off to a shaky start, losing Sangkarra for just 4 runs to Hilfenhaus. But Michael Di Venuto and Mohammed Yousuf batted with great concentration and courage, and managed 38 and 33 to set up the innings for Hobart. Michael Hussey achieved a healthy 48 runs to his name, before getting out 2 runs short of his half-century. George Bailey was absolutely superb with the bat, smashing 80 runs off 65 balls, along with Rhett Lockyear, who scored 6, to win the match for Hobart with 14 overs to spare. Hilfenhaus was good with the ball with 2 wickets while Henderson and Philander took 1 each.

Final Result- Hobart Hunters won by 6 wickets (with 84 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 2- Round 2 : Christchurch Crocs vs Geelong Vanishers at AAMI Stadium, Christchurch

Christchurch started well, winning the toss and electing to bowl on a relatively average pitch. Matthew Hayden and Dominic Thornley were proving to be no push-overs opening the batting, with Haydos making 42 off just 48 balls before getting bowled by Elliot, Thornely managed to scrap up a great half-century before falling for 59. Superstar Kevin Pietersen and Craig Phillipson didnt trouble the scorers too much, scoring 3 and 5. Neither did Abdul Razzaq or Tim Luderman, scoring 17 and 10 each. Will Sheridan and Grant Lambert batted very solidly with 34 not out and 19 not out to seal off Geelong`s innings to give them a competitive total of 205/6. Albie Morkel was the only multiple wicket-taker with 2, Neil Wagner, Grant Elliot, James Franklin and Jeetan Patel all took 1 each.

Christchurch didnt start off as good as they would`ve liked, with Peter Fulton and Brendon McCullum going back to the pavilion early scoring 7 and 1. Shiv Chanderpaul didnt do much good either, scoring only 11, and at this point it looked like Geelong might pull off a fantastic win, but it was not to be when Corey Anderson and Misbah ul-Haq stepped into the crease, and both performed well scoring half-centuries each. Grant Elliot made a good 39, and 12 and 21 by Albie Morkel and James Franklin not out gave Christchurch a win to their name. Abdul Razzaq was great with the ball with 3 wickets, whilst Charles Langeveldt got 2 wickets and Grant Lambert got 1.

Final Result- Christchurch Crocs won by 4 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)

TTPL Div 2- Round 2: Central Stags vs Darwin Daredevils at Tragear Park, Alice Springs

The Darwin Daredevils won the toss and elected to bowl on an excellent pitch here at Alice Springs. They managed to get Tatenda Taibu for just 22 early, but his opening partner Chris Gayle showed impressive fight scoring 40 odd at more than a run a ball to give the Stags a decent start. Travis Birt and Marcus North after that was simply unstoppable, scoring 70 and 67 each, from then the Stags always looked like posting a huge total. Angelo Matthews only made 6 but no matter, James Smith and Daniel Christian solidly batted and made 33 and 27 not out to give the Stags a total of 281, the highest total of the TTPL so far. Fidel Edwards was superb with 3 wickets, while Shoaib Akhtar and Luke Butterworth got one wicket each.

Despite a solid 53 to start off the innings by Simon Katich, the Daredevils never looked like posting 281 to win the match. Joe Denly went back to the pavilion early for just 2, and Glen Batticiotto soon after, for just 27. Yuvraj Singh and Graham Manou were great with the bat, with 68 and 42 each. Other than that the batting was quite ordinary with Henriques only making 12 and Butterworth making a duck. Shane Warne only made 2, whilst Shoaib Akhtar and Fidel Edwards made 6 and 7. Cullen Bailey was left not out on 14, while the Stags enjoyed their second win of the season. Sohail Tanvir was superb with the ball with 4 wickets, Angelo Matthews got 2 wickets while Daniel Christian, Jon Holland and Brett Dorey got one wicket each.

Final Result- Central Stags won by 33 runs.

TTPL Div 2- Round 2 : Perth Powerhitters vs Napier Crushers at W.A.C.A Ground, Perth

Napier won the toss and elected to bat first on an excellent pitch here at the WACA. They started well with Indian destructive batsman Virender Sehwag scoring 60 runs at more than a run a ball before getting out caught. James Marshall made a start but didnt go on with it scoring 23. Rahul Dravid and Neil Broom were gold for the Crushers, scoring 33 and 61, Broom`s innings was a particular highlight, being the highest scorer for the innings. Sourav Ganguly made a quick-fire 27 off 33 balls before getting out to Cranmer. Matthew Bell was superb with 59 not out off 55 balls whilst Luke Woodcock supported him with 22 not out off 24 balls, to give Napier a grand total of 294 off their 50 overs. Mitchell Starc took 2 wickets while being very expensive, whilst Nuwan Kulasekara and Allan Wise and Michael Cranmer got one wicket each.

Perth were never going to let the Napier Crushers win easily, and quickly showed their intent when their openers Badrinath and Shaun Marsh scoring 79 and 77, giving the Crushers something to worry about. Rahane only made 18 but New South Welsh-man Usman Khawaja managed a superb 62 off 57 balls, adding to his already growing reputation. But other than that, nobody made any more big scores, wi.th Tim Paine only making 19 and Michael Cranmer scoring 16 not out and Mitchell Starc 6 not out. They achieved a total of 283, which was a great effort chasing a total. Luke Woodcock managed 2 wickets while Michael Mason,Darryl Tuffey and Mohammed Asif got one wicket each.

Final Result- Napier Crushers won by 11 runs

A close encounter with Watson leading the way with the bowl after a pretty poor sisplay with the bowl. Siddle's crucial wickets in the middle stages got us in a strong position. Important wicket of Bopara as he has been a gun for Panthers this season. Hodge has forgotten his loyalties :facepalm

Warner repayed my faith in him with an exciting start. Jayawardene has been a huge FAIL this season. Need to bring someone else for him in the next games. Watson lead the way with the bat. Cool innings from Afridi and Hartley to take us home. A tough encounter but glad to have won it.
