In June's issue of The Wisden Cricketer, a letter suggested the following:

  • English cricket season begins on exactly the same date each year - 23rd April - St George's Day.
  • The season begins with the first round of matches in the Twenty20 Cup.
I think this is quite a good idea. After a while, everyone will know the English season starts on St George's Day. It would beat how it is currently, 4 freezing days at Lord's watching the county champions against the MCC.

What does everyone else think?

I don't really see the point in changing it.

20-20 works better at the end of the season I reckon - that's how it's done in most domestic structures.

The only thing I can really take out of that suggested change is that it would start of St George's day, which would be kinda cool.

Your weather sucks though!

Our Twenty20 cup this year starts on Monday and we are not even half way through the season.

Other sports have grand kick offs - football has the Community Shield at Wembley, rugby has the Twickenham double. Cricket has one man and his dog huddled under a blanket. We need a showbiz opening.

No-one's going to go and watch Twenty20 in the freezing cold, with low scoring bowler dominated games early season. Twenty20's a summer game that flourishes when the families can go along on a warmish summer evening and watch some high scoring cricket. Leave it as it is I say.
