You could either have damaged the miniscule cartelidge or if you're really unlucky one of the ligaments - most likely anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments.
You'll need an arthoscopy if you have :p
Please don't make him afraid.Half the ortho problems are relieved by rest and immobilisation.I'd advise him to consult an orthopedic if the problem is not relieved by 1-2 days rest.Strains are more common than tears.

Ah. Now you're just spoiling my fun.
I know this because I had a bucket handle ACL tear from playing football a few years ago...

Seeing all these photo's, the amount of wine i have drunk, the bottle of aftershock unopened, makes me want to whip out the webcam and take some drunken photo's. However it seems to arouse unhealthy suspicion from the mrs. Watch this space....

oh!that was unintentional on my part.
Anyways in case of football players such tears (ACL/PCL and also medial and lateral menisci) are quiet common.Mostly if you do not follow the dynamics of a kick properly.

The worst part was the rehab after the operation. They used a hamstring graft so I went from a perfectly good hamstring and a buggered knee to a buggered hamstring and a buggered knee!
