Joking.

Oh no you dee-uhh

Does the word Indian actually refer to a specific ethnicity? I thought it was as general a term as American.

Nah. Indian only means Indian (the ones from india, not the fake Native-American Indians :p)

You can be more specific and say what region you are from because each is so diverse but ethnicity wise Indian should suffice.

You've confused me even more. So the word Indian is not linked to a specific ethnicity and yet it is one?

So a Tamil guy , A Punjabi, a Tibetan/Chinese looking Indian (I had a guy at my work who looked Tibetan but spoke Hindi and said he was indian) are all the same ethnicity? I don't think so

What he's saying is they use Indian for you white people, because terms such as Punjabi, Gujarati, Marahati, Sindhi, Tamil, Telegu, and the such have little meaning for you.

They aren't the same ethnicity if you really want to get technical about it, but statistically they are referred to as one (For example, it doesn't say number of Gujaratis living in the United States, it says number of Indians).

If I have to tell somebody like you(means an foreigner), I would say I'm an Indian and that's all. I wouldn't tell you that I'm delhite or whatever until you'd ask me.(if you have enough knowledge about indian culture)

Those all people aren't same ethinicity.

To put it in Yank terms, it's like you saying to someone from India, 'I'm American.' But if you were in America and met someone in NY, you would say you are a Texan. And so on..

A Tamil guy, A Punjabi and a Tibetan/Chinese looking Indian walk into a bar......................

If he is Caucasian he'd probably call himself Irish/Polish/German whatever. No one really says they're Texan or a Michigander Orr something unless they are super hardcore... They just say they are from Texas.

Confusing...at least that is how it works here.

Yea, no one really takes their state identity seriously save for a few specific areas (Texas being one)

Cricketman is spot on, they would say white american, indian american, african american etc. from Texas/others

Which is why I think you guys should say - gujrati-indian, punjabi - indian etc

The thing is there isn't much difference between each 'category' except language and sometimes religion.

The only thing that is officially used as defining ones background is religion...caste... Although banned by law it is used as something like affirmative action is in the states where it is easier to get into tough schools and jobs if you are lower in the pyramid.
