Bayer Leverkusen had accepted Stuttgart's ?4.9 million bid for Andriy Voronin

Andriy Voronin will not be joining VfB Stuttgart after the player failed to reach an agreement with the club regarding his contract, the official website has revealed.

It is believed that Voronin wanted a higher basic salary that what was being offered to him, but Stuttgart were not able to increase it to the amount required by the player.

The official website of VfB Stuttgart made the following statement:

"VfB Stuttgart has pulled out of the contract negotiations with Andriy Voronin, and will not be signing the player."

Stuttgart's bid of ?4.9 million for the Ukraine star had been accepted by his current club Bayer Leverkusen earlier.

Stuttgart will now be looking to offer Inter Milan's Marco Materazzi a much more lucrative deal. Infact it is believed that Stuttgart manager Claudio Ranieri was willing to lose Voronin, in order to get Materazzi to the Gottlieb-Daimler stadium.

Training

Claudio Ranieri was disappointed with his team's defence in last weekend's game against Dortmund, in which, despite taking the lead twice, Stuttgart allowed Dortmund to come back in both occassions, and in the end had to settle for just a point. The match ended 3-3.

After a day's rest, Ranieri, his staff and his players were back on the training ground. The workload of the defenders have been increased to heavy, while that of the rest is maintained at medium. A greater emphasis was also put on tackling, setting the off-side trap, and greater understanding and co-ordination between defenders and the goalkeepers as well.

Ranieri later on called up Hinkel and Hildebrand and said:"You two are my leaders, and need to take more responsibilty in handling the defence. We cant afford to concede goals this easily. You all will have to work as a unit and a team, and give it a 110%. I know it is going to be difficult, but I have full faith in my players and especially the two of you."

Andreas Brehme who was also present translated most of that into German to ensure that the players understood what the manager was saying.

Ranieri then spent some time with his two Italian coaches, Bardin and Rossi. It was then that Rossi suggested looking for a backup goalkeeper to Hildebrand, as Alexander Stolz might not be ready just yet. Ranieri said that he was already doing so, but his first priority was to get Materazzi here.

Ranieri speaks to a press reporter

During the week, Ranieri was also approached by one of the local sports channels for a short interview, which the Italian accepted.

1abe314ranieri130p.jpg

Reporter: "Mr. Ranieri, how disappointed were you with the Dortmund result?"

CR: "It was disappointing, because we got into a winning position, but then threw it away. But there is no point in living in the past. We've been training hard, and are trying our level best to improve."

Reporter: "What are your comments on the failed transfer of Andriy Voronin?"

CR: "I was looking forward to having him here, but unfortunately we were not able to offer him what he wanted. I am not supposed to disclose any particular details of the matter."

Reporter: "Does it have anything to do with Marco Materazzi's transfer and the need to offer him a better contract?"

CR: "I dont think so. We were always going to offer separate contracts to the two players, and as of now we will be offering Marco the same thing that we had planned before the Andriy incident. However we might be able to be a lot more flexible now with Marco's contract."

Reporter: "Do you think Marco Materazzi is the solution to your team's defensive problems?"

CR: "His presence will help a great deal, and that is why we are so keen on getting him. But in the end we have to work as a team, and Marco will have to team up with the other players, and deliver as a unit for the club to do well."

Reporter: "Also are you planning to buy any more players?"

CR: "We are interested in a few players, but right now the main concern is to get Marco here."

Reporter: "Thank you, Mr. Ranieri."

CR: "Thank you."

Another Transfer

Stuttgart have sold Tobias Rathgeb to Chemnitz for ?140,000. The 23 year old midfielder had played for the Stuttgart youth and reserves team, but was yet to make a first team appearance. The transfer was approved by Claudio Ranieri's assistant manager, Andreas Brehme.

Materazzi snubs Stuttgart

a_MarcoMatterazzi_vt.jpg

Materazzi is staying in Italy

Inter Milan's Marco Materazzi has refused to join German side VfB Stuttgart, stating that it would be a step in the wrong direction for him, the defender has revealed today in a press conference.

"I do not think playing in Germany will help my career. With Inter, I will get to play in the Champions League and have a good chance of winning the Serie A. So even though financially I would have gained by joining Stuttgart, it would be a step in the wrong direction," said Materazzi.

This is a big blow for VfB Stuttgart and Claudio Ranieri who have failed to sign both Materazzi and Voronin. Infact it is believed Stuttgart withdrew from negotiations involving Voronin, so that they could offer Materazzi a better contract.

Manager Claudio Ranieri is extremely disappointed with the recent turn of events, but believes his team is strong enough to do well this season.

"I can understand Marco's concerns, and do not blame him for that. It is difficult to attract players from Italy and Spain, because the leagues there are the best. But I was hoping that Marco would prefer being a leader in this team, rather than one of the many stars at Inter."

"For us it is important to forget this episode and concentrate on the season. We already have a good team, and only have to work harder in order to achieve the success we thrive for. Also with Marco not coming here, it gives a chance to one of the current defenders to step up and rise to the occassion," said Ranieri.

Earlier Inter Milan had accepted Stuttgart's ?2.3 million bid for Materazzi had given them permission to talk to the player.

Preview: FC K?ln vs VfB Stuttgart

soccernetnewsks0.jpg

FC K?ln host VfB Stuttgart at the RheinEnergiestadion in K?ln in this gameweek four Bundesliga encounter. Both teams are in the lower half of the table after disappointing starts to their respective seasons. Claudio Ranieri's Stuttgart side have one win, one loss and one drawn game that sees them at eleventh position in the league, with a negative goal difference of 2. Uwe Rapolder's K?ln have yet to register a win, having drawn two and lost one game, and have a negative goal difference of 1. But K?ln did pick up a crucial away point against Bayern M?nchen last week, while Stuttgart were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Dortmund.

Ranieri expressed his disappointment at that result and blamed his team's defence for letting go a lead twice. The former Valencia manager has also failed to acquire the services of Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi, who refused to join Stuttgart, stating it as a move in the wrong direction. Another person who wont be joining Ranieri at the Gottlieb-Daimler stadium is Bayer Leverkusen striker Andriy Voronin. Leverkusen had agreed on a fee of ?4.9 million for the Ukraine international with Stuttgart, but the player rejected the contract offered to him. Stuttgart were unable to improve their contract offer and withdrew from the negotiations, a step that made Voronin's agent call the club "confused and lost".

Gronkjaer has made a strong comeback under Ranieri

Stuttgart's star performers in the season so far have been Jesper Gronkjaer and Mario Carevic. The former has fallen into the good books of new manager Claudio Ranieri, and has been in top form scoring the winner against Mainz, and bagging two in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Dortmund. Carevic too has played a crucial role so far, scoring both in the DFB Pokal 1st round game against Wattenscheid and in that Dortmund game just under two weeks back.

Podolski-tin.jpg

Podolski holds the key for the home side

FC K?ln on the other hand will be depending a lot on their star striker Lukas Podolski. The 20 year old has already attracted interest from some of the bigger clubs in Germany and abroad, and also been called up by Jurgen Klinsmann to the German national side. He also scored in the 1-1 draw against Bayern.

Both teams are in dire need of a victory, which sets up a cracker of a game at the RheinEnergiestadion.

Transfers

With the transfer window now shut, this is the summary of the players in and out of the club in the July-August window. (since Claudio Ranieri took over)

transfersut8.jpg

Would have wanted to see atleast one more signing, that of Marco Materazzi, for whom we even had to sacrifice Andriy Voronin. In the end, just one player coming in, Jens Harter, who wont even be direct signing for the first team, and will play with the reserves till he is found fit for the first team. However the coaching staff here at Stuttgart have high expectations of the 25 year old defender, and believe that he will be in the first team very soon.

It is also a bit sad to see the likes of Horst Heldt and Zvonimir Soldo leave the club. But it was a step that Ranieri had to take to get the club to progress. Both Heldt and Soldo were past their best and were also having very high wages.

youll be a little better in the hip pocket but your 6:1 ratio of signings may hurt futher into the season if injuries come into play

I was so close to spending a total of ?7.2 million on Materazzi and Voronin. Both deals broke down very close to the end of the transfer window.

I hate that Italian Cheat!
Well you wont have to be see him here. Ranieri has now set his target on another slightly more low profile but as talented Italian defender. Any transfer now can only take place during the January transfer window.

FC K?ln vs VfB Stuttgart
Bundesliga Matchday 4
RheinEnergiestadion

The Match:
After holding Bayern to a 1-1 draw at home, FC K?ln host VfB Stuttgart at the RheinEnergiestadion, in a must win game for both teams. Both teams are present in the bottom half of the table, and the home side especially has yet to register a win the Bundesliga. The visitors have also suffered a setback when they failed to sign either Andriy Voronin or Marco Materazzi, which has left manager Claudio Ranieri in a fix.

This is how the two teams lined up:

Subs:

Claudio Ranieri has gone for a 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Tomasson and Cacau upfront. Carevic is present at the top of the diamond, with the two wingers, Thomas Hitzlsperger on the left and Jesper Gronkjaer on the right. The highly impressive Fernando Meira continues to play in the defensive midfield position. Heiko Gerber makes a direct comeback into the starting lineup after having being sidelined for three weeks due to injury. He starts in the left back position, pushing Ludovic Magnin inside alongside Boris Zivkovic, with captain Andreas Hinkel at right back. Timo Hildebrand will hope to allow fewer goals in in this game, but needs more support from his defence for the same.

The Result:

goalsii5.jpg

Claudio Ranieri's team were lucky to have come back from K?ln with a win. The home side were the better team, but will be kicking themselves for not converting attempts into goals.

Stuttgart took the lead thanks to a spectacular strike from Jon Dahl Tomasson. The ball curled in beautifully and found its way into the K?ln goal. Tomasson celebrated his first official goal for the club as he ran along the touchline, doing a high-five with manager Claudio Ranieri in the process.

But Tomasson's Danish team-mate Peter Madsen equalised soon after for the home side, when he received a fantastic pass from Lukas Podolski, and his shot was deflected into goal by Ludovic Magnin.

But Fernando Meira's header, early in the second half, proved to be the winner. Meira won the aerial challenge against Alpay and headed the ball in from Jesper Gronkjaer's cross. Meira danced his way along with his team-mates to the visiting Stuttgart fans, with both arms raised.

And Meira infact was the best player of the game. He won possession at crucial times and did his bit to prevent K?ln from scoring more goals. His goal obviously turned out to be the winning one of the game. Others who did well include Jesper Gronkjaer, who is having a fantastic start to the new season, and Jon Dahl Tomasson, whose opening goal was a treat to watch. Even the K?ln manager clapped his hands in appreciation. Timo Hildebrand did well to stop K?ln from scoring more goals, although they did waste most of their chances. Ranieri's side were second best today, but were brave enough to take their chances. The defence performed a bit better today, but still not convincing so as to allow the home side a greater number of chances.

Fernando Meira was named man of the match, and he deserved it.

That was an awesome win. But as MWaugh said, the injuries, if any, could create havoc in Ranieri's side as they have lost 6 and got just 1 in.

I fully agree to that, and am also slightly worried about that situation. Lets just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Missed chances prove costly for K?ln

TH

Fernando Meira heads in the winning goal

Fernando Meira's header early in the second half was enough to hand the visitors three points. Earlier in the first half Peter Madsen equalised for K?ln, after his international team-mate Jon Dahl Tomasson had given Stuttgart the lead with a fabulous strike.

K?ln and Stuttgart faced each other in the Bundesliga, with both teams in desperate need of a win. K?ln wanted to build on last week's draw with Bayern at the AllianzArena.

At it was the home side that had the first chance but Youssef Mokhtari's long distance shot went over the bar.

Then in the tenth minute of play, former AC Milan striker, Jon Dahl Tomasson put the vistors in front with a fantastic goal. The Danish international cut infield with the ball, and blasted a banana shot from outside the area finding the top right corner of the K?ln goal. Tomasson celebrated his first official goal for Stuttgart by running along the touchline with hands stretched across, and doing a high-five with manager Claudio Ranieri in the end.

Stuttgart's celebrations were short lived as just six minutes later, another Danish player, Peter Madsen put the home side back in the game, when he picked up Lukas Podolski's wonderful ball, and went for goal, and despite Ludovic Magnin's sliding attempt to the stop the ball, he only managed to deflect it into the goal.

Podolski could have then given K?ln the lead, but despite doing very well to take the ball into the penalty area, his final shot only found the side netting.

Thomas Hitzlsperger then got the first yellow card of the game for holding back K?ln's Carsten Cullmann. The referee also showed Christian Kaln the yellow card shortly after, for bringing down Jesper Gronkjaer.

Mario Carevic had a fantastic chance to score, when he rose above Martin Andresen and directed Thomas Hitzlsperger's cross towards the goal. But K?ln keeper Stefan Wessels produced a fantastic save and tipped it above and outside for a corner.

The scores were still level at half-time, with the home side having a better game so far. No changes were made during half-time.

Play was then restarted, and just three minutes later Fernando Meira struck with a fine header to give Stuttgart the surprise lead. Stuttgart had won a free kick in the K?ln half, and Andreas Hinkel passed the ball to Gronkjaer who ran along the right flank and delivered a nice ball in. Fernando Meira won the aerial challenge against Alpay and headed the ball into the goal. The Portuguese defender then danced his way, along with his team-mates, to the Stuttgart fans with his arms raised.

Stuttgart's defence was once again breached by Peter Madsen, whose final shot required a brilliant save from Timo Hildebrand to keep it out. Hildebrand was furious with his defenders.

Silvio Mei?ner and Christian Tiffert were then brought on for Jesper Gronkjaer and Cacau as Ranieri decided to go on the defensive. Mei?ner took over Fernando Meira's defensive midfield position, while the latter moved back, and formed a five man defence now.

Gonzalo Castro was the third receipent of a yellow card, when he held back Thomas Hitzlsperger. K?ln made their first substitution of the match as Javier Ara?jo was replaced by Sebastian Schindzielorz. Shortly after the homeside had a shot again when Martin Andresen tried to curl one from long range, but never really bothered Hildebrand.

Lukas Podolski then was looking dangerous with a fine run, but was brought down by Fernando Meira just outside the penalty area. Meira wasnt the last man however, and hence was only given a yellow card for the challenge. Podolski took the resulting free kick himself and blasted it high and wide, as another change went begging for the home side.

The home side then made a double chance as Gonzalo Castro and Martin Andresen made way for striker Albert Streit and midfielder Tobias Nickening.

Thomas Hitzlsperger could have then put the game beyond K?ln, when he picked up Ludovic Magnin's pass and took the play inside, only to shoot off-target in the end.

Then just four minutes from full time Youssef Mokhtari found Peter Madsen inside the penalty area, but the latter's shot was too weak and easily saved by Timo Hildebrand.

Christian Genter came in for Thomas Hitzlsperger in the final minute of normal time, as Ranieri went on the ultra defensive.

The referee blew the whistle at full time, as the game turned to be one of missed chances for the home side. The visiting Stuttgart fans celebrated as the players shook hands and exchanged their team shirts. Claudio Ranieri especially looked releaved to have gone back to winning ways.

After the match the 53 year old Italian had this to say: "Well I am glad to have won this game. It was a difficult game, and K?ln were playing really well. But I thought we made the most of our chances, which won us the game in the end."

K?ln manager Uwe Rapolder also blamed his team's poor conversion rate for the defeat.

"Both teams had chances, but they converted and we didnt. Infact I thought we had the better attempts, and actually controlled most of the game. But in the end its a costly defeat for us and we have to now work harder in order to get the points," said Rapolder.

Fernando Meira did well both in midfield and in defence, and also scored the winning goal. It was only right then to name him the man of the match.

"It was a tough game for us, but we managed to get the win, which is a good sign. It is difficult to win games in which you havent been the better team, but we have done it, so I'm happy," said Fernando Meira.
