Shane Warne has not ruled out a dramatic return to international cricket for the next Ashes series if Australia's problems with trying to fill his spin position continue. Warne retired from internationals following the final Test against England in Sydney last January, and earlier this year ended his first-class career by withdrawing from his Hampshire deal.

However, he has been one of the outstanding performers in the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals, who currently top the league table, taking 14 wickets at 18.78. At the same time Australia are struggling to find a consistent, frontline Test spinner, although Stuart MacGill's recovery from wrist surgery has been a promising sign.

If he decided to come back, I reckon it'd be great!

Although Warne couldn't be replaced to the same degree. Australia really have to move on now and give MacGill a go since he's been waiting for his chance for all these years. Casson may improve as well so I feel they need to move forward now. Warne surely should see this and give the youngsters a go now since he has had a superb career and retired.

It does show character to want to come back after the career he has had and the age he is now but its the younger generation turns to step up now.

I would admit it would be good to see him play again but really it would be the right thing for Australian cricket if they were to move on to the next in line, which is MacGill and then younger lads. I'm sure Warne would make a positive impact to the spinners in a coaching capacity but if he is considering to return, he should give the younger generation their turn.

I think it would be more of a benefit for Casson, ect to see Warney in action and learn his thought process rather then them playing themselves.

Well he has seen him action. I'm sure he would have watched Warne though out the decade and inspired him to do the same thing and that would also be the same for every other young spinner in Australia. Plus I think coaching him and passing on advice would help his education and improve him as a bowler.

It's really just a one-off thing not a full blown come back.

Yes but if MacGill was injured. Would it be a more postive move to go to a Casson or a younger spinner regardless of how he performs than going back to the past?

As awesome as it would be, I hope it doesn't happen. The Aussies would just be taking a step back, they need to move on.

I'm 50/50 about it. Australia never wants to lose the ashes again. And if it means bring back Warney in then fine! We could bring in a youngster but he might be belted around the park resulting in a Ashes loss.

Anything to beat the poms....

Who is our next best spinner apart from MacGill? Cason?

I would think so, as he got the contract.

McGill isn't a youngster either, doesn't make a difference vs Warne tbh.

It is time to move on.
Warne could possibly have played against India this summer, would have been interesting.

if Macgill and Warne are both in the squad then no team will ever be able to beat australia in tests....

I disagree. We should move on AFTER the big tours of India, South Africa and England in the next 12-15 months. This is a hugely important period for Australian cricket, if we beat off those 3 challenges we are undisputed #1 probably for the next 2-3 years. So if Shane wanted to play in ANY of those series I'd love it and even if he doesn't - I'd be asking him anyway.

As for MacGill, he will be OK if Warne doesn't return, but I really hope he retires after the England tour next year. He is old, unfit, a terrible batsman and fielder. Then start with Casson/Cullen/someone else when Pakistan visits us in Nov '09 and he will have a couple of years to learn before any 'big' series come around again.
