look at Barmy's last (excellent) article. in the thread it was posted in there were a few comments and some discussion, but now i am not even sure where i would find that thread. the article on the front page - which is easier to find - has no comments on it. it makes it look as if the articles get ignored, which doesn;t encourage people to read them, comment on them, or even volunteer to write more.
This is part of the reason my gut solution would be to consolidate the cricket discussion section, so that you don't get the issue of a large number of empty threads.

For articles, that would have the change from trying to spark a new discussion with one, to being a contribution to furthering a discussion, or even just a way of highlighting long form posts by putting them on the front page.

Comments being separate from the front page to the forums is a technical thing - the front page uses different software and doesn't link across to the forums (hence the PlanetCricket bot posting the articles).

That said, I certainly want to make the front page highlight forum content a lot better than it does.

As others have said, a lot of people are here for the cricket games, and at the moment DBC in particular, rather than cricket itself. Not due to lack of interest, just that you can find out stuff about real cricket elsewhere. This is the main hotspot for cricket games. I reckon if you had links at the top of the page to 'top/trending threads' (or whatever you want to call it) more visitors may peep the threads outside the DBC14 section.

The discussion bit is horrible. Too many sub forums, just let it be one cricket discussion forum.

I was thinking more a single thread per country for everything to do with that country's cricket - with the idea that if the discussion is spread less, there might be a higher appearance of activity out of the posts we do get, which might help the chicken and egg problem of supposedly no one posting because no one else is posting.

Obviously we can't just make everything else a sub-forum of the DBC section - so how would you get people looking at the cricket discussion section to make it more active?

What about countries where cricket is so big you can't squeeze it all into one forum(India,Australia,Pakistan,England)

Can we have tier system Big 3 have one main forum other can go to tier 2 subforums :p

*sorry for trolling here just couldnt resist

I know I haven't been active in... 3 years I think, so please ignore my GM title for the purposes of this post, but perhaps we try to keep the forum overly organized? I think we did this back when I was blue, but is there really a need for separating international tours from normal discussion anymore? My thinking is that we probably have people clicking straight on to those sub-sub-forums instead of going into the general discussion which could take away from the general cricket topics. Basically, my thinking is that the international stuff is what brings many people into that section anyway, maybe if they see other cricket topics it will spur their interest even more.

All we'd have to do if we were to go this route is dump all of the international threads into the general cricket discussion and sticky the active tour threads.

Okay, giving this a quick test by putting the current tours into the main cricket discussion section.

Personally, I prefer it where it was.

Wouldn't it make sense to have current tours in the 'International tours and events' section anyway?

I think the plan is to do away with a sub-section for that stuff and just have it in the "discussion" forum as it is now, stickied to the top for current tours.

Less clicking and sub-forum clutter.

I likey.

definitely any thing that helps us find these discussions easier, with less clicks and rooting around sub forums has got to help.

The reason I prefer to discuss cricket on the DBC forums is because the people who post there are a different group to those who post elsewhere and I have not really bothered to spend time looking through and getting to know the other people, so I feel like I am talking to strangers when I could talk to people I know at the DBC forums.

Problem is a lot of the smaller forums are filled with the weirdest bunch of humorless nobodies, it's painful trying to get banter started in some of the other sections... I feel like the DBC forum, generally, has a higher banter value these days. Just gotta get more folk, like yourself, Blocker, Snowy and others to step outside and check out the other sections. But you're right, it's a better "catch-all" forum for a little more freedom of thought and discussion, along with humour.
