Who should be the number 3 batsman?

South Africa should go with Kallis at three i still don't know why they put Amla in at 3 Kallis is way better suited for 3 and knows the resposibilities of batting at 3.

Congratulations, you win today's Ian Chappell impersonation contest :D

I personally think Bell at 3 and KP at 4 in order to shield the best batsman until the lesser bowlers are on. Gambhir is doing well now but i think he'll fall to 4 soon to prolly Yuvraj or a rising youngster (not R. Sharma though). To me sachin needs to be at 3 for the ODI.

But surely if the said player is the best player in the team then they don't require shielding from the better bowlers. If they require shielding from the top bowlers, they aren't the best player in the team; therefore your argument falls apart. Best player should be at 3, KP for England, Ponting for Australia, Tendulkar for India, Kallis for SA, Sangakkara or Jayawardene for SL, etc etc.

Bradley John Hodge

Your obsessed with the Bushrangers arn't you. Anyway, i totally agree with hoops, the 2 openers in a ODI should have a certain ability to hit the ball and to see out the swing and seam, than it should be followed by the best batsmen, and number 4 should be able to take his time and have the ability to play strokes, where as the middle order are usually strikers of the ball and for Australia you have the michael bevan type player of hussey. Than of course you have the tail who just want to hit that ball out of the park, that would be a well balanced batting line up in my opinion.

For Pakistan, Shoaib Malik is a great choice for number 3. He has been really good at number 3. He averages 41 at number 3.

My next choice would be Mohammed Yousuf. He averages 55 at number 3.

When Inzamam was in the team, Pakistan wasted him by sending him at number 4. He was supposed to come at number 3, but always came in at number 4.

In a Test, you have to be technically immaculate, and there are few better than Rahul Dravid.

Chanderpual has become a very good #3 for West Indies since Lara left. He has played great cricket in the last year and a half, and is really solid when he comes in early against swing bowling and is also good against spin. His technique looks awkward and unusual but its effective for the type of game that he plays.

Kevin Pieterson is not a number 3. It has nothing to do with being the best player, it has to do with a player who can survive the new ball if needed and revive the innings, or if needed, they can go out and smash. It just so happens that Ponting, Kallis and Sanga are good at that. Tendulkar is no number 3 either, he's said it himself.
