Test XI

Hayden
Smith *
Ponting
Tendulkar
Lara
Kallis
Sangakkara +
Pollock
Warne
Murli
McGrath

Almost the same as yours Ben with Sanga being the only difference.
Mohammad Yousuf is really unlucky to be left out but with such legends in the middle order I just couldn't find a spot for him.

ODI XI

Gayle
Tendulkar
Ponting
Sarwan
Pietersen
Dhoni +*
Andrew Flintoff
Pollock
Vaas
Murli
Mcgrath

I had Gilly opening with Tendulkar but Dhonis record since he came into international cricket has been superb, if this was the all time ODI XI I would have Gilly for sure.

This is the first time I'll agree with Ben. (Might well be the last time) Good team. Perfect, in other words.

The naughties are far from over yet. However pretty damn good side Ben.

Tests

Matthew Hayden
Graeme Smith
Rahul Dravid
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
VVS Laxman
Adam Gilchrist +
Shaun Pollock
Shane Warne *
Shane Bond
Glenn Mcgrath

Ponting from 1st January 2000 to 22nd March 2009:

Code:
Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50

98 169 21 8868 257 59.91 14257 62.20 31 36

Dravid from 1st January 2000 to 22nd March 2009:

Code:
Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50

98 171 23 7885 270 53.27 18291 43.10 20 38

Ponting has quite the argument to be there ahead of Dravid.

Same amount of games, Dravid has 2 more innings, Ponting has plenty more runs, 11 more hundreds, a much better strike rate, better average, and 4 thousand less balls faced. Ponting for sure, for mine.

Dale Steyn
Glenn McGrath
Muttiah Muralitharan

Was pretty difficult to pick really. I wanted Pietersen in, but couldn't justify not including Rahul Dravid. Then as far as the bowlers are concerned I had to pick McGrath, Warne and Muralitharan, and then wanted something abit different to McGrath, so went for Dale Steyn ahead of Pollock. Akhtar would have been considered if he wasn't such a twat, Ntini has taken a hell of alot of wickets in the 2000's as well, 2nd highest wicket taker in the 2000's after Muralitharan.

ODi XI:

Matthew Hayden
Sachin Tendulkar
Ricky Ponting *
Jacques Kallis
Kevin Pietersen
MS Dhoni +
Andrew Flintoff
Shane Bond
Nathan Bracken
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath

Actually far easier to pick than the Test XI. Team pretty picks itself as far as I'm concerned. There haven't been any ODi bowlers with better records than Bond, Bracken, Muralitharan and McGrath, and then you've also got 10 overs from Kallis and Flintoff as well, so one heck of a bowling attack. Then with Hayden and Tendulkar opening up, with batting from Ponting, Kallis, Pietersen, Dhoni and Flintoff to follow it's a pretty formidable team. Extremely happy with it.

I wanted a defensive batsman in my team who will be able to bring stability to the side. Ponting is great, but my side would have looked a tad too aggressive with him in there. Note that I have chosen Ponting in my ODI side.;)

Test and One Day X1 for 2000?s

Here is my choice of Test and One day X1 FRO THE 2000’s.

Test X1

Graeme Smith
Matthew Hayden
Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Jacques Kallis
Adam Gilchrist (Wicket Keeper)
Dale Steyn
Shane Warne (Captain)
Shane Bond
Glenn McGrath

One Day X1

Sanath Jayasurya
Matthew Hayden
Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
Kevin Peterson
Jacques Kallis
MS Dhoni (Wicket Keeper & Captain)
Dale Steyn
Muttiah Muralitharan
Shane Bond
Glenn McGrath

Both Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan are deadly in any type of pitches anywhere in the world and capable to win the game single handedly with little effort from the pacers. Time and again they have proved that. On the other hand it may not be a good idea to have 2 spinners in a team unless the pitch favors spin bowling. Hence the consideration to have only one spinner in both One day and Test.

Glenn McGraw is an automatic choice for any eleven by his exceptional, consistent and match winning efforts. However the two other bowlers who have come to the limelight in the 2000’s with their destructive and incisive bowling are Shane Bond and Dale Stein who have proved on more than one occasion that they are capable of destroying any batting line up in a short time and each of them is a match winner.

I also believe in 3 prong paced attack with one specialist spinner for both One day and Test.

Jacques Kallis have proved to be the best All rounder around now on a consistent basis. His inputs to the three prong pace attack will allow the captain to have more bowling options in both forms of the game.

Adam Gilchrist is undoubtedly an all time great in terms of batting & wicket keeping.

However, one cannot ignore the radical changes in Dhoni’s performance as a Wicket Keeper, Batsman and Leadership qualities. Since he took over captaincy he has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills by bringing about incredible victories.

Under his new look and innovative captaincy it appears India is getting 100% performance from all the team members.

I believe by having him as a wicket keeper batsmen and giving him the responsibility of captaincy which is proven now it will add more value to the One day team.

So in the light of this aspect he has edged out Adam Gilchrist as Wicket keeper from the One Day X1.

Please no offence to cricket fans whose favorite players have been omitted. It is just my way of perception.

First reactions to all these sides are - No Virender Sehwag opening in Test cricket? He has a similarish average to Graeme Smith overall but Smith has cashed in against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe better than Viru giving Viru the edge against the top sides. Not a massive oversight I suppose, but I'm surprised no one went for him. Maybe the Indians haven't seen this topic yet:p

Indians won't like my next comment though. Sachin Tendulkar does NOT deserve a spot in a 2000's Test team. Take out matches against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and he is averaging 45 in India and 48 overseas this decade. That is surpisingly...mortal for a man of his reputation. Going on figures, I would have Inzamam, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Younis Khan, Dravid, Chanderpaul and Mohammad Yousuf in my team before I went for Sachin. And of course Lara, Kallis and Ponting are the easy picks. So that's 11th best middle order batsmen by my ratings this decade. And you could stretch the argument and say Laxman, Damien Martyn and certainly Pietersen have outplayed Tendulkar as well.

My Test XI:
1. Virender Sehwag
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Ricky Ponting (c)
4. Brian Lara
5. Jacques Kallis
6. Mohammad Yousuf
7. Adam Gilchrist (wk)
8. Shaun Pollock
9. Shane Warne
10. Muttiah Muralitharan
11. Glenn McGrath

Second Test XI (just cause I can):
1. Justin Langer
2. Graeme Smith (c)
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Younis Khan
5. Shiv Chanderpaul
6. Kumar Sangakkara (wk)
7. Andrew Flintoff
8. Brett Lee
9. Anil Kumble
10. Shoaib Akhtar
11. Makhaya Ntini

Think of an ODI XI later...

You dont have an attacking pace bowler in your first side. Pollock, McGrath and Kallis are bowlers who rely on line, length and movement to get wickets. They might not be able to pick wickets on batting pitches(with the exception of McGrath). But I guess having Warne and Murali play makes up for that defect. Great team btw.

McGrath can attack. But maybe Shane Bond can find a way into one of these teams.

Otherwise you guys have pretty much nailed it.
