I had bowling practice today!

Went down at about 4:20, and jogged and stretched for a bit, and started bowling at 4:30.

It started off hopelessly. Line and length messed up, and I couldn't get a good runup going. But then I took a few pointers from my coach - hold the ball in one hand while running up, and I re-jigged my runup, and started getting better results. Bowled some beautiful deliveries at the right line and length, and even though I did overpitch quite a few balls, my line was getting really good. I discovered a while back that when I'm tired I over-pitch, and it was a hot day and I had been doing quite a bit of work before coming down, so I was tired as it was. And after half an hour I took a bit of a break.
After the break I struggled with full-tosses. I could keep my line straight, but couldn't pitch it. My bowling run-up was taking a lot out of me. I've got a pretty lengthy run-up - It is 12 steps down and 7 steps to the right from the crease. I start from there, walk 7 steps, then run in and bowl. I am thinking of shortening it. I also didn't practice any variations since I was struggling to get my stock ball right.

All in all, I really need to work on my stamina...

And then came the match! I volunteered to be skipper, and opened the batting. We were a strong batting side, 3 good bats including me, but no real stand-out bowlers. 4 a side, 8 overs, I thought I'd retire after 3, give another guy a chance to bat, and come out towards the end to slog.
So we started well, I hit a four on my first ball, and some wides from the other team means we were 8 off the first over, I got 5. Next bowler bowled a few dead balls, a wide which we got a single off too (to me), and a six, before declaring the over, giving us 18 off 1 over :p We were going great, then my opening partner played a silly shot. Another good bat came in, but then he got me runout! Shortish ball outside ofstump, I tapped it past the keeper (who was the 4th player in my team, the batsman who was out was umpire), he misfielded, and we should have got the single. But he just stood there calling no leaving me halfway down the track! Runout for 6, disgusting!
We got 61 in the end after 6 overs, with 2 overs left. I still thought we could defend this, they were a weak batting side, with just the guy who batted well from my earlier match and 3 hit-amd-miss batsmen.
First two overs gave 19 runs, so I brought myself on to bowl. Do you know how it feels when you tell a fielder to stand in one place -like at the boundary-, and he doesn't listen -by standing closer- and the next ball the ball flys over their head? Well, imagine that twice in an over with two fielders :mad. And then another bad ball for four, a bunch of singles and a no-ball or two, and we can estimate say...18 runs in the over? :mad
I didn't bring myself on to bowl after that, and we picked up three wickets from one bowler, one being a runout, and all we needed was to get the last-man out to win. But they needed just 11 runs in 3 overs. I was going to bring myself on, but then I had a small kid in my time who was begging for a bowl (more like pouting), and refused to field if he didn't get to bowl. So I gave him a bowl, told him he had 2 fielders on the off, one in the leg, and the batsman couldn't hit well in the offside, so just to bowl outside offstump. He bowled a wide outside off, and got hit for a four on the legside, and a few dead balls.
So I went to the legside, and told him to just bowl stump to stump. Prompty the next ball was short and outside off, and they got two.
So then I move back to the offside as he said he'll bowl offstump this ball. Next in the legs for six, and the match is done. :mad I gave him a mouthful after that. He's a nice kid, and I've always told him that I felt he could be a good cricketer. I'm always the one who lets him bat and bowl when others wouldn't, so I felt it fair if I could tell him off for this performance. He went home unterstandly grumpy after that, and then since a couple of other guys had to go as well, we ended for the day.

This big empty sandy area next to where I live. Full of rocks, and people walk thier dogs there and such. Cars aren't allowed to park there, and there is one tree right at the end, past the six mark for the straight boundary. No one has managed to hit the ball into it though.

A match and bowling practice again!

I bowled for 15 minutes before the match started. It went okay, I just worked on getting used to a short run-up, but couldn't build proper rhythm. You know how a fast bowler has to walk, jog, then run? I tried walking then picking up speed before bowling, but couldn't pick up speed consistently or properly.

Anyways, then was the match. Same 4 a side, 9 overs this time, I wasn't skipper. We bowled first. I persuaded the skipper to let me open as I desperately want to get runs under my belt as I know I can bat well on this pitch, so I was introduced in the 4th over and bowled the 8th over.
Now in my honest opinion, I didn't bowl so badly in those two overs. I even picked up a wicket - bowled with a yorker. I really feel I bowled just 4 bad balls - A fulltoss which went for six in my first over, a full-toss no-ball which also went for six, and 2 bad ones which went for four each. Add to that some good balls which ended up going for four, and a bunch of ones and twos, and I'm too scared to calculate my bowling figures. They say luck abandons you in poor form. Most other days I would have got away with some of the stuff I bowled, just not today.

Anyways, we were chasing 93. So we started okay, 6 after 3 balls, I had just a single, but then I somehow played out three dot balls. I just couldn't hit the ball right. The skipper was out next over, and we were pretty much out of it with 11 in 10 balls when I got strike again. I got a fullish delivery in my legs, going down the legside, so I went forward to clip it away. For some reason it always got real windy when I got to bat or bowl. All deliveries drifting down leg, for batting and bowling. Made it tough for both. Like I said, luck abandons you. Anyways, I went to clip it, missed, and expected a wide. Next thing I know, I'm bowled. Turns out the ball died down while passing me and hit a rock, pivoting back onto the stumps...just my luck.
So we lost by about 20 odd runs. The last two fought well, but we lost. I think I'm just gonna give up now. I'll be skipper next match, and just bowl one over and bat last! I'll just wait it out till I get some form.

Anyways, there was good news as I returned to bowling practice after the match. I took the short runup again, but this time I started straight away with jogging to the stumps or with taking a few steps then jogging. I started finidng very nice rhythm, and bowled quite well hitting the line and lenth consistently. I think I did pretty well there, and now I'm finding my rhythm, so all I need to do is maintain it. My runup is now 7 feet dow, and 4 feet diagnally. The same I used to use when I used to go for coaching.
I won't be going down tommorrow, and will probably go down one day of Tuesday - Thursday and definately Saturday. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this rhythm going and maybe start work on my variatons some time soon!

Oh shut it. :p I used to be the first choice bowler there before I stopped, and opposing teams still keep every player on the boundary for when I bat and don't keep one player close up like they do for others. Just a patch of bad form, thats all...

More cricket today!

I volunteered to be skipper in a 5 - a -side, 10 over match.
My side was a huge batting-based side. 4 good batsmen. 2 who have been lethal in past matches, 1 who is really good and can bowl, and one who is a decent bat but horrible fielder and bowler, and was returning after a while. The other side was strong in bowling, but had a bunch of hit-and-miss batsmen, so I felt we were in with a shout.

I won the toss and we batted. The returner and one dangerous bat (The only lefty there) opened, I slotted myself in for last. The other two players were going to open the bowling. I was hoping to only bowl and bat when needed.

We lost the returner in the first over, 5/1. And we lost the other bat in the next over due to a farcial runout. It was an easy run, the other guy was halfway down the pitch when the lefty called 'NO!'. The lefty still would have made it had he taken off then, but he just stood there as the other guy reached his end, and turned around, and almost made it back in time but didn't. Terrible. He made up for it though - the next 3 balls to him went for six each! These two blazed on for a while, taking us to 55 after 4.3 overs, till the lefty got out, meaning I had to bat with the other good bat (Mentioned earlier as my opening partner in one of the matches), for 5 overs as the last pair! I had said we needed 90, and I was intent on getting it.
My innings was horrible. No fours, and a few singles. I left a lot of balls, stole runs from wides and byes, and generally held us back while the other guy hit a few sixes and fours. But it was what the team needed. We reached 90 in 9 overs, I must have made like 3 of those. He played excellently. I was on strike in the final over, and it trying to get a big hit, I got 3 dot balls! Turned the strike on the fourth one by walking down the track and using my bat and pad to push the ball away (something I should do more TBH), and we had 91 with two balls left. Next ball he slams away to the deep and we run one. Or I thought we did. I reached the other end, he reached halfway, only to say "Get back!". I'm like 'What?' as he starts running back, saying he wanted to keep strike! Dumb idiot, was an easy runout for them as we both were now on the same end! Our team didn't let him lived that down for a while! Anyways, 92 to defend, I figured we could do it. Even if my innings was horrible, I got some time in the middle, and we didn't coilapse for 60 all out, so it was a good enough job in my opinion.

Bowling, we kicked off great. Two wickets in the first over, including a runout by the horrible fielder! This was the batsman who could bowl. The next two overs were kind expensive, the lefty and the guy who batted with me, and they were 27 after 3 with two pretty decent bats in the middle. I gave the ball back to the batsman who can bowl, and he got me the wicket (which I missed, incidently, as I was giving a few guys direction to the bus stop as well as which bus to take as they asked me!), but we had this pretty much won with them at like 30 - 32 with the last pair in after 4 overs. So I brought myself on!
Bowling seam up medium pace, wide of the crease as my follow through tends to block the umpired when I bowl stump to stump as I run into the stumps. As a result I was bowling in-drifting offcutters, which I do bowl well and usually resort to when my offbreaks aren't working. First ball was a low full-toss clubbed for four. Luck does abandon you when you are in bad form, all the other guys bowled loads of fulltosses and got away with it, but I didn't! The lefty bowled three in the over and got 2 singles and a dot ball, the good bowler got a wicket with a full toss, and the other guy escaped with some twos but not me!
Next ball was driven down the ground for two. But my third ball did the trick! Full pitching in line and drifting in, the guy played all over it as it clipped the edge of the traffic cone we use as a stump! Woohoo!

So 1/6 and a kinda match-saving 3 of like 15-20 balls. Decent enough :p

Since this got over quick, we played another 5 over a side match. 2 guys left, so it was 4 vs. 4. The returning guy got the job as skipper, although he sucks. He threatened to leave otherwise. There a lot of guys like there, I prefer not to have them in my team, but what to do...

So anyways, I bowled the first and last over. My first over was brilliant. Bowling to the guy I dismissed earlier, I had him dropped at long-off by a guy who stood in despite me telling him to go back. The ball went over his head and he just got his finger tips to it. How many times must this happen for them to listen?!? Anyways, that dropped catch, and nearly bowled two times - one by a ball pitching yorker length but somehow bounced over the stumps, and one that cut back in and beat is cut shot and missed the traffic cone by a coat of varnish. 9 runs off it, 2 wides as well, but good for a five over game.
I got a wicket in the last over, bowled :). Two fours off it though (both bad balls, I was really tiring, but one went over a fielders head once again. I swear I'm gonna kill one of them these days...), and some singles and I ended with 2 overs for 20 and a wicket. Not bad.
Chasing 52 to win, I was slotted in last, and the other 2 fell quick, as I walked in with 32 to win in 3. The guy bowled horribly however, and our skipper was terrible as keeper. So bad, he got switched with another guy 3 balls in the over. He bowled a lot of wides and no-balls, and we got some runs, meaning it became 18 needed off 8! I clubbed a four, we needed 13 off the last over with me on strike. A lot of my shots hit the middle, but the bat was kinda crap and they had no power behind them. Some could have gone for four but stopped short due to this. Anyways, first ball, and I was out. Outside off, pulled, top-edged, bowler caught it. Didn't have the strength to go on (Did I mention my fitness really needs work?). The other guy was the last man, I was the so-called 'dead runner'. 13 to win in 5, wide ball. 12 in 5. And then he holed out, meaning we lost. Meh, I got some form back with the bat and ball, so I was fairly happy. So not a bad day over-all.

No bowling practice though. The two matches exhausted me! And it was getting dark anyways.

Next time I'll be playing will be on Saturday, hopefully with some bowling practice too!

Thanks, and good luck Cricketman. Would be nice to have a real NT player on PC for once :D
