Just wondering if any one else has been out without facing a ball. it's happened to me twice now. Also what is this called?

Silver Duck - Get out 1st ball of match.
Diamond Duck - Get out without facing a ball (Usually a run-out).
Golden Duck - Get out 1st ball.
Duck - Get out for 0 after facing 1 or more balls.

As a No.11, I have plenty of experiece with ducks. Just ask...

I have always been told a wicket on the first ball of the innings is a platinum duck. It surely can't be a silver duck, as silver is a lesser substance to gold.

It might be a cultural thing, or a family thing. I remember I was number 3 in a 20 over game and the opener was out the first ball of the innings and the scorer referred to it as a 'platinum duck'. I carried my bat for the 19.5 overs, but only made 8.

When I was growing up, it was:

Golden Duck - Out first ball. Doesn't matter what situation that match is.
Platinum Duck - Out first ball of the innings
Diamond Duck -Run out without facing.

I got a diamond duck opening the batting for Gauteng Juniors in my one and only province game. :( My partner hit it straight to short cover on the 5th ball of the first over, called yes, then no, then yes, then no. I was halfway down the pitch and ended up just calling him through. I put in a dive and was out by inches I reckon. Still have never forgiven him to this day.

Mind you, it didn't really matter. I only lived in Gauteng for like a month.

In regards to the other form of ducks, the worst ever duck I got was playing club cricket in Australia. I went out to the middle all cocky after I scored 70 odd the previous week. First ball, the guy runs up and fizzes down a throat high bouncer that zipped off the pitch more than expected, and i got a glove on it to gully.

First ball of the match. Couldn't believe it.

Jeez cricket can be cruel.

I always thought:
Diamond - First ball of a game
Golden - First ball you face
Sapphire - Out without facing
Duck - Out without scoring.

Fortunately, I haven't ever gotten a Diamond, but have fallen foul of each of the others, including 2 'sapphires'.

Lee: 19.5 overs and 8 runs?! Jeez...

Diamond duck is out without facing. Duck is out without scoring. Golden duck is out first ball without scoring. I don't know what getting out first ball of the innings, but I can confirm a Diamond is when you don't face a ball.

In a club final match where me and my brother opened together, he faced the first ball, drove it to the covers, we ran a single and I called for an easy double, but he tripped and could not start while I was watching the ball and ran to the same end as him. I was ran out. Pretty pissed but we won the match. So was forgotten.

In the sport of cricket, a duck refers to a batsman's dismissal for a score of zero. The name is believed to come from the shape of the number "0" being similar to that of a duck's egg, an alternative version of the term given by the Concise Oxford Dictionary.[1]

Players who are dismissed by the first ball they face are said to have been dismissed for a golden duck.[2] Players who are dismissed without facing a ball (usually run out) are said to be out for a diamond duck.[3][4] This is not to be confused with a platinum duck or royal duck, which refers colloquially to a batsman who is out on the first ball of a match. Silver duck[5] refers to a batsman who gets out on the second ball he faces without scoring a run.

To be dismissed for nought in both innings of the same two-innings match is to be dismissed for a pair,[6] because the two noughts together are thought to resemble a pair of spectacles; the longer form is occasionally used.[7] To be dismissed first ball in both innings (i.e., two golden ducks) is to suffer the indignity of making a king pair.[2]

Problem Solverered?
