Mitchell Johnson has set his sights on one day opening the batting for Australia in Twenty20 or ODI cricket as his all-round talents continue to impress. Johnson scored his first Test hundred in Cape Town this year and was a valuable striker at the Champions Trophy, where his thumping 73 from 47 balls saved Australia's blushes against a second-string West Indies.

"I know it is a big call but I wouldn't mind opening the batting in one-day or Twenty20 cricket," Johnson told the Daily Telegraph. "I would quite enjoy it. It would be hard as we have so many great players in the side but if there was ever an opportunity I would definitely put my hand up to bat higher. I think batting No.8 in Tests is okay for the moment."

Johnson has never batted higher than No. 8 in a one-day international but he said that during the Champions Trophy, he was often preparing to be a potential pinch-hitter. It seems only a matter of time before he will be get a chance to move up the order and take advantage of the one-day fielding restrictions.

"There were times in the one-day series when I padded up early for Powerplays," he said. "It was scary as I had never done it before. It is something I reckon I would enjoy."

Johnson is embarking on the limited-overs tour of India with a thirst for wickets, having thrived there during the 2007-08 series, when he topped the wicket tally with 14 at 18.57. He is keen to return to his fast, fearsome style after an up-and-down few months.

"I look at the wickets I got in the past and I was unpredictable," Johnson said. "I was trying to be too perfect with my line and length in England but guys like Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting say just bowl fast.

"The prime example is Shaun Tait. He is unpredictable and fast. He will occasionally bowl wide balls but will get wickets. I guess you learn your role. I went through that stage where I was thinking about swinging the ball so much that I stopped swinging it. If I swing the ball it is a bonus."

What are your thought on this?

I know he has no chance to open the batting in ODIs, but I like to see him open in T20s a couple of times to see what happens

Does he do it for his state team???
If he doesn't, maybe he should do that first before doing it at the INT level.

While I'd like to see Johnson bat higher then eight, I don't see him opening the batting for Australia in the foreseeable future. He has a lot of talent with the bat and while he could "maybe" get Australia of to quick starts once in awhile, he'd be much better suited coming in at six, seven with the batting powerplay still in hand.

Australia could use him as an opener in 20/20 cricket though, he's being wasted really coming in at eight.

I doubt he'll be playing for his state team any time soon, international cricket will be standing in the way, perhaps if WA make it to the final of the Big Bash this year, he could play in that or the Champions League.

I reckon it'd be good to see, he's good against the new ball in the 80th over, why not against the new new ball? Maybe in a dead-rubber or if Shaun Marsh/Shane Watson get injured.

Yeah, but I'm still completely dumbfounded as to why Phillip Hughes isn't opening the batting in ODIs. Maybe he can do it in T20s, or come in 3-4 after a good partnership.

First though, he has to do it for the Bulls.

As much as I'd like to see him open the batting, I doubt it's going to happen. However, he should be batted higher than 8 where I feel he is being wasted. He would be an incredible weapon to unleash in the batting powerplay.

Graeme Swann opens the batting for his County side occasionally yet he doesn't bat in the top 5 in the order does he whether it be T20 or ODi. (?) I wouldn't trust Mitch in the top half of our batting lineup - it'd be too much of a risk. But I don't want him batting so far down the order as well, same with James Hopes when we play him.

Same here, they seem to cover him as a test player but he does well in State.
Johnson Open? I'm not too sure...

He's gotta be kidding. Although it would great to see the Australian scorecard read 0/1 after the 1st over in every game :sarcasm

Because he's that bad? He's probably one of the best bowling all-rounders going around at the moment, his dream is hardly that far fetched, well not as much as you think it is.

He must have been listening to me :p I called this ages ago, although you would think hes missed the boat with Paine going so well as opener and Watson a shoe in for one spot while Marsh is back in the ODI side. Warner and Hughes are killing it in T20s and then you got Haddin to return.

You mean the warriors????

Ok. Talking about all-rounders & battting, I think Irfan Pathan is a better batsman than Johnson. And he's proved it with his knocks from playing at the Opening slot to No.11 :)
