Personally, I think that Schmeichel is the best keeper of all time. I'm a bit biased because he's the player I've seen more than most other legendary keepers.

Having said that I've watched a lot of classic football matches, especially international tournaments and I think that Maradona is the greatest of all time, and either Zidane or Pele is second.

Also, Di Stefano is supposed to be the greatest player of his era by a long stretch although I've never actually seen any of his games.

I think players like Van Basten, Baggio, Redondo etc also deserve a mention.

Schmeichel or Banksy are the best keepers of all time - why isn't one of them in goal?

Well since i started watching football in Euro 96. Scheichel is definately the best keepr i've seem in my lifetime.

But based on what ive read, heard & seen on video clips of past great keeprs like Banks, Yashin, Zoff & Sepp Maier especially. Cant put him over those guys.

The thing is, it's difficult to judge a keeper based on video clips because they're always going to be of them making saves. You can't really make an assessment of them.

True. But i guess if past players & journalist etc who saw them play instead of us & rate them highly. I dont mind aceepted their point of view & selecting them over modern day greats that i may have seen.

Can't agree with that - Schmeichel is the best one on one keeper I've ever seen. He was also strong with penalties, and gave his defence such confidence as well. He also pulled off a carbon copy of Banksy's save vs Pele in a CL match. He also popped up with a goal or two!

that's a decent effort.

But i think it's a frivolous discussion unless you know what you are picking the team for.

against other star studded sides i'd play two holding mid-fielders (probably Rikjaard alongside Lothar Matthaus) similar to the current german formation, with the front man being an out and out goal scorer (like the original ronaldo)

i'd probably switch maradonna with platini, and probably replace platini. from that team

Fair assesment sir.

You also get Lev Yashin related bonus points.

Ha thanks.

I always wonder if Just Fontaine would feature more in these XIs if he had a longer international career.

Probably, superb goal-scoring record.

I reckon we could start picking the Best all-time football XIs for some of the major teams like Brazil, England, Italy, Holland, Argentina, Germany, France, Spain & see how they match-up.

-----------------ROBSON-------SCHOLES--------EDWARDS------------------

----------------------------------HAYNES----------------------------------

----------------------B CHARLTON-----------GREAVES-----------------------

Banks great save against Pele in 1970 should forever hold down his status as England's best keeper & arguably the greatest ever (no disrespect to Lev Yashin).

In defense Moore & Wright should be certainties in the center of the defense, wasn't totally sure about the full-backs but i decided to go for Cohen & Samson based on what i read.

Robson aka ``captain marvel`` seems to have been one of the most accomplished all-round mid-fielders to represent England wins a place easily along with the much glorified Duncan Edwards.

Legends Matthews, Finney & Charlton don't need explaining & well Hurst leading the line doesn't necessarily mean he is the best striker to come out of England but scoring a hat-trick in our only WC triumph should give him first preference over the rest IMO.

Honorable mentions to Sam Hardy, Neil Franklin, Jack Charlton, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Des Walker, Roger Byrne, Phil Neal, Bob Crompton, Stuart Pearce, Ray Wilson, Paul Gascoigne, Glen Hoddle, Steven Gerrard, Paul Ince, Nobby Stiles, Colin Bell, Allan Ball, Cliff Bastin, Ray Wilkins, David Beckham, John Barnes Dixie Dean, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Steve Bloomer, Tom Lawton.

I wouldn't class Torres as Spain's current best striker, let alone all time.

Good effort with those teams. I would attempt it but I don't have enough knowledge of football pre the Maradona era.
