South Africa

Is this guy a good wicketkeeper?

No he is inferior to all of van wyk, davy jacobs, daryn smit, heino kuhn and boucher.

Just for comparison sake their list a careers:

Kuhn averages 27.90 with a strike rate of 78
Boucher averages 28.79 with a strike rate of 84.72
Jacobs averages 28.25 with a strike rate of 81.07
Daryn Smit averages 23.96 with a strike rate of 85
Morne van wyk averages 41.29
Tsolekile averages 20.14

No strikerate is listed for van wyk or tsolekile at cricinfo.

If thami is included is clearly only to meet targets, nothing about merit.

Overall very happy with the squad. My only concern is colin ingram as the number 7. Not really a natural strokemaker for me. Would rather have take miller or rilee rossouw(not his natural position but he can do it imho) . Maybe rusty for robbie peterson but I suppose to had to pick one to make the politico's happy.

Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, capt)

Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins)

Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors)

AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans)

JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans)

Colin Ingram (Chevrolet Warriors)

Jacques Kallis (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans)

Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors)

Robbie Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Imran Tahir (Nashua Dolphins)

Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne van Wyk (Chevrolet Knights)

SA world cup squad

I just saw that also on cricinfo. I am surprised there is no place for Boucher as wicketkeeper and that David Miller isn't playing, although he made a good impression in recent months. I don't understand why Albie Morkel has been included and Faf du Plessis is included. Albie Morkel has shown his skills in the IPL already.

I had a feeling that South Africa purposefully weren't playing Tahir against India in the ODI series. On the spinning pitches in the subcontinent he might offer a surprise.

What would you say the best 11 is from that? Ingram has been awesome up the order so one option is moving everyone down so Kallis 4, AB 5, etc.

everyone down so Kallis 4

nah, he tends to get bogged down pretty easy at times so it's a good idea to keep him at 3. I think Ingram and du Plessis will have to fight for the no.6 spot side in the team, every other spot is pretty much taken.

1. Graeme Smith*
2. Hashim Amla
3. Jacques Kallis
4. AB de Villiers+
5. JP Duminy
6. Colin Ingram/Faf du Plessis
7. Johan Botha
8. Wayne Parnell
9. Dale Steyn
10. Morne Morkel
11. Imran Tahir

Robin Peterson might get a go at 7 as the bowling all-rounder if Tahir fails in that case everyone starting from botha moves down one.

SA world cup squad

SA need to cut that out & i can feel your frustration man.

Guys like McLaren, Van Der Wath, Van Der Merve i think should be in ahead of Parnell & Tsotsobe (who on flat indian should get smashed, IND bats have given him wickets in the current series) & Peterson

never knew about this 7 colored player thingy, makes sense now. I too was wondering how robin peterson got a place in the team (at first i thought it was alviro, later i found out it was robin, if they really needed a colored player, alviro would have been a much better choice)

anyway, my best 11 would be

smith
amla
kallis
de villiers
ingram
duminy
Plesis
Tsotobe
Steyn
Tahir
Morkel

can substitute tsotobe with the likes of parnell/botha depending on the pitch ofcourse, since both parnell and botha can chip in with some runs

7 batsmen is good enough, wish they had another all rounder like albie who would have made the batting line up stronger

Albie morkel can only blame himself. Sure he performed for the super kings but has been dreadfull for the proteas for 18 months, he averages 14 with the bat in asia. Also did nothing for the titans in the pro 40 to try and force his way back into the reckoning.

Concerning the targets. According this mornings papers it was reduced to 6 after a long discussion between the board and andrew hudson(govenor of selectors). Not sure what hudders said but he got them to accept 6 and to agree that since tahir is now SA citezen he is coloured and not white as before.:D

With only 6 required morne van wyk got in, if it was 7 thami would have gone.

My starting 11 from the squad will be this:

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB
5.JP
6.Faf
7.Ingram/Van Wyk
8.Botha
9.Steyn
10.M.Morkel
11..Tahir/Parnell/Tsotsobe

Tahir should play in most pitches that we would face but if we get a seamer then lopsy should play. This side is much better balanced with kallis back and you also have jp and faf who can make up a few overs.

My only major worry is really number 7, neither ingram or van wyk is really suited to that role. That's why I would have stuck with miller even thought he has struggled a bit.

Boucher keeps well. I think what RSA wanted was a keeper who can bat as well. Of late, Mark Boucher has not been able to contribute much to his team's cause. Including Boucher in the team would mean sacrificing a position. His time is up and he knows it too. Possibly will play a few games post the World Cup and bid adieu.

On the other, as has surprised many of us, Albie's exclusion, surprises me too. RSA will feel his absence in the Cup.

isn't van wyk a keeper too?? they could use him as the keeper (and probably as the no 7 batsman too) and let de villiers field since he is an outstanding fielder.

^Yes Devilliers is too good a batsman to have his attention diverted to anything other than batting.
