To get to SE Wales, from SW Devon we have to drive around the Bristol Channel and cross the Severn Bridge over the Severn estuary. Takes 2.5 hours roughly on a good day traffic-wise.
However, to get to North Wales is entirely different, it can take up to 8+ hours because of the windy, mountainous roads, depending on where you are going!
If we hopped on a plane we'd be there in about 10 minutes
However, if the tidal barrage were ever to be built to harness the 2nd most powerful tidal area in the world (Severn Estuary), for the record, then it would take about an hour and a half to get to the centre of Cardiff, rather than the 3(ish) it takes at the moment!
Finally, from next summer there are going to be passenger ferries (followed by car ferries) from Ilfracombe (about 20 mins from my house...) to Swansea (about 30-40 mins from Cardiff(ish) which would be a nice, cheap and quick way to get to Swansea and back to see the Ospreys play

It's more like going from Melbourne to Geelong. Europe is a lot more bunched up than Australia. Countries are less spaced out than Aussie capital cities are.
