KARACHI: The Final of the 2018 Pakistan Super League was played at the National Stadium in Karachi between the hometeam Karachi Kings and the defending champions, the Quetta Gladiators. The match was the first high-calibre sporting event held in the city in almost a decade. A match of historic values, drama, hype and a game of cricket to live up to it.
The Final was won by the Quetta Gladiators by a 34-run margin, securing a successful defense of their title from the year previous. They defeated the underdogs, Karachi Kings at their homeground in a thrilling game of cricket that had its fair share of ups and downs.
Quetta Gladiators' Rilee Rossouw scored a 42-ball 79 that earned him the Man of the Match award in the Final, whereas Kevin Pietersen of the same team was adjudged the Man of the Tournament. Mohammad Amir of the Karachi Kings was the leading wicket-taker with 27 scalps to his name, and Islamabad United's Misbah-Ul-Haq was the leading run-scorer for scoring 452 runs in just 12 matches.

MATCHES OF THE TOURNAMENT |
-Peshawar Zalmi reached a fantastic total in the end, courtesy of their batting clicking on all accounts. All of them delivered they way they were supposed to. Tamim Iqbal and Kamran Akmal gave them a good start, and then Mohammad Hafeez and Dwayne Smith played the crucial part in the middle overs, which was then capped off by Haris Sohail and Khushdil Shah. Taking them to 170.
Islamabad United tried their best to chase that total, but in the end, they could only tie the game. Alex Hales and Misbah-Ul-Haq played beautifully, scoring 76* and 57, respectively, and Sam Billings had a huge impact in the end, but they could only tie. The match moved onto the super over.
Since Islamabad United batted second in the match, they got to bat first in the super over, and they finished with 12 runs. 12 runs isn't much, but it isn't less either. This was going to be anyone's game. But, some excellent from Andre Russell and a match-changing catch from the substitute fielder, Steven Finn that dismissed Dwayne Bravo, led Islamabad to a narrow 4-run win.
-Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah hosted its first match of the season between Islamabad United and the Quetta Gladiators, and it was a run galore. Batting first, Islamabad United finished with 199/6 in their 20.0 overs. Alex Hales was the highlight for United, scoring 94 off just 54 balls before top-edging a ball, and getting caught 6 runs short of the first hundred this season. Misbah-Ul-Haq played a very sensible innings in the middle overs, scoring 36 off 29 balls. United's innings was beautifully finished off by Faheem Ashraf's 11-ball 24.
But the response to that total could not have been anymore upfront. Quetta Gladiators' newly formed opening pair of Jason Roy and Saad Ali added 54 runs off just 27 balls, which was followed by Kevin Pietersen playing his best innings, yet. Scoring 75 off 49 balls, in an innings that included 8 fours and 2 sixes. The skipper stepped up and played a great innings, as well. Scoring a fierce 44 off just 26 balls. The lower-order collapsed badly, but in the end, Rahat Ali won them the game by hitting a boundary off the last ball when four runs were required.
-Two of the strongest teams on-paper, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans went head-to-head in Match 11 of the season. Played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah, this was by far, the most thrilling match of the season. In the end, Karachi Kings scored a narrow 1-run win. Karachi Kings batted first, and with contributions coming from most of their players, they saw themselves to a modest total of 167/6 in 20.0 overs. Ravi Bopara's 44-ball 48 top-scored for Karachi Kings, whereas for the Multan Sultans, Mohammad Irfan was the highlight with his figures of 1/16.
In response to that 168-run target, Multan Sultans were bowled out for 166. In the climactic sequence, two runs were required off two balls with the last pair standing. Mohammad Amir, who had already picked 3 wickets in the innings, bowled a fabulous delivery to bag the wicket, and give his team a 1-run win. He ended the innings with a 4-fer to his name. Kieron Pollard, who had scored 57 off just 35 balls was extremely dejected to fall short. And even though Mohammad Irfan and Imran Tahir, the last pair for Multan Sultans revolted in the end, it just wasn't enough.
HIGHLIGHT REEL |
-In a collapse of epic proportions, Karachi Kings lost their last six wickets for thirteen runs. The last three of which fell to Mustafizur Rahman in three successive balls. This was only the second hat trick in the history of the tournament, and the first of the season. With a wicket to his name already in the match, Mustafizur Rahman's hat-trick helped him register the first 4-wicket haul of the season.
-During a match between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, Hasan Ali produced one of the finest spells of fast bowling this tournament has ever seen. Registering the first 5-wicket haul of the season, and ripping through the middle-order of the opposition, like ripping their heart out of their chest, a performance which highly influenced his team's first win of the season.
-Fakhar Zaman launched a riot against Islamabad United, leading his team to a mammoth total and recording the first hundred of the season. He smashed a 59-ball 109, and stayed unbeaten until the end. The first instance of a batsman carrying his bat through the end in this league. He and his opening partner, Anton Devcich laid the foundation of victory with an onslaught of all sorts on the Islamabad United bowlers, racking up a 176-run opening stand between them. The most in the league's history.
-First match back after being benched for several games, Rilee Rossouw laid an onslaught to score his first hundred of the league and rack up a comfortable win whilst chasing a fairly intimidating total of 170 against a bowling line that consisted of Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy.
-This couldn't have come in at a better place for the Quetta Gladiators. John Hastings gave a championship securing performance in the final of the league against the Karachi Kings in their homeground of Karachi. Assuring a successful title defense for his team.

-The Dubai International Stadium is lit by a special system of floodlights named "Ring of Fire". Unlike other stadiums in the world, this stadium has the lights fixed around the circumference of its round roof, thereby minimizing the shadows of objects in the ground and having no light towers. It has 350 numbers of floodlights attached in series.
-Originally called the Lahore Stadium, it was renamed in 1974 in honour of the former Libyan President Colonel Muammar Gaddafi following a speech he gave at the 2nd Organisation of the Islamic Conference meeting in Lahore in favour of Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons. The stadium houses the headquarters of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
-Karachi, Pakistan's largest and most populous city, presents an interesting and colourful combination of the old and new. The National Stadium in Karachi is Pakistan's highest capacity cricket ground. The stadium plays host to several important domestic matches, usually the final of the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy. It is home to the most decorated club in Pakistan's domestic history, and is a home to spectators that are passionate - and noisy - making it a great place to play and watch.
-Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah is Pakistan's home away from home. Over the years, it has hosted several classic showdowns between Pakistan and India. It is one of the most historic venues in the history of cricket. It holds the record for the most number of ODIs hosted in a venue. It was originally constructed in the early 1980s and has been much improved over the years.

--In a collapse of epic proportions, Karachi Kings lost their last six wickets for thirteen runs. The last three of which fell to Mustafizur Rahman in three successive balls. This was only the second hat trick in the history of the tournament, and the first of the season. And since Mustafizur Rahman had already picked a wicket earlier, it became the first 4-wicket haul of the season.
--Playing against the Quetta Gladiators, Islamabad United opted to bat first after having won the toss. Their opener, Alex Hales laid the foundation to a massive 199-run total. It was one of the most outrageous beginnings to an innings the league has ever seen. He hit 9 fours and 3 sixes, only to be dismissed 4 runs short of a hundred. He top-edged the ball and was caught quite comfortable, and even more unfortunate for him was the fact that his team lost despite his best efforts.
--During a match between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, Hasan Ali produced one of the finest spells of fast bowling this tournament has ever seen. Registering the first 5-wicket haul of the season, and ripping the middle-order out of the opposition, like their heart out of their chest, being extremely important in his team's first win of the season.
--Mohammad Amir dismissed most of the Multan Sultans' marquee batsmen, picking a 4-wicket haul and helping his team win a thrilling encounter. With 2 runs needed off 2 balls and the last pair at the crease, he produced a magical deliver which brought him his 4th wicket and saw his team over the line. He played a crucial part in his team's narrow 1-run win over their opposition.
--Fakhar Zaman launched a riot against the Islamabad United bowlers whilst chasing a huge 171-run target. Hitting 6 fours and 5 sixes in his unbeaten 41-ball 84, he made a mockery of the total they were given to chase. Smashing all the bowlers around the park, securing an easy win in the end for his team.
--Although in defeat, Mustafizur Rahman bowled an unprecedented spell of bowling to register a 5-wicket haul that bowled Peshawar Zalmi out for only 146.
--Dwayne Bravo's 4-wicket haul was exactly what his team needed to defend a total of only 146.
--Pakistan Super League III saw its second hat trick in the space of seven matches. This one was registered by Shadab Khan, who dismissed Babar Azam, Mohammad Taha and Imad Wasim, pulling the rug under Karachi Kings' leg whilst they were chasing a 169-run target.
--Rumman Raees was amongst the 4-wicket haul claimers this season, as well. A season that saw itself turn into a bowler's paradise, was greeted with a wonderful display of bowling from Pakistan's Roman Reigns as he claimed a 4-fer in a target defence.
--Fakhar Zaman fired on all cylinders, leading his team to a mammoth total and recording the first hundred of the season.
--In a losing effort, Dwayne Bravo picked up the most expensive 4-wicket haul of the league's history.
--First match back after being benched for several games, Rilee Rossouw laid an onslaught to score his first hundred of the league and rack up a comfortable win whilst chasing a fairly intimidating total of 170.
--Shahid Afridi dismissed the last four wickets of the Lahore Qalandars batting line in the same over as they suffered from a collapse of epic proportions.
--Rumman Raees had a huge impact on the last match of the season, he picked a 4-wicket haul, helping his team win and secure a spot in the first play-off against the Quetta Gladiators at Dubai.
--Karachi Kings made a bone-headed decision to bowl first on a flat wicket at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, and they payed the price for it. Their opponents reached 174, but the Karachi Kings were salvaged by Mohammad Amir and his second 4-wicket haul of the season, which restricted them there. It could've been a lot worse had Mohammad Amir not bowled the spell he bowled.
--Against the Karachi Kings in Karachi, John Hastings picked a match-winning 5-wicket haul in the final of the season. Assuring the title for his team.
