England Team Discussion

Stokes would be a step backwards. Do you think they'd take a left field decision and put Jamie Smith in charge after Buttler?

I'd be shocked - the only names I've heard mentioned at all are Brook, Stokes and Vince. And even though he'd be my choice I don't think for a second that Vince is being considered.

But we know what Vince gives to England, it’s the square root of diddly squat
But he looks so damn good while (not) doing it. Plus as we all know, BBL runs count double.

But can Stokes manage himself and thew workload? I don't see him playing all formats and leading in each. He isn't getting any younger. England's best case scenario would be to focus on one format and go after it- In my opinion, if he is to lead the ODI and T20 sides, he might have to step aside from the Test setup and let Pope take over there.

Alternatively, this CT fiasco is a good ground for breeding the next generation in. Start with a fresh slate- can even go for unknowns/ country stars and try to take them to India/ Sri Lanka next year and subsequently the CWC 2027. This move would leave Stokes free to take charge of the Test team and try and win the WTC.

He can just rest for bilaterals like Rohit

True! He could. Still have doubts though. I'd rather look at someone like Sam Curran to lead instead of Stokes.
Curran has seemed like the obvious pick for a while but he can't even get into the squad. I'd personally give him a run in the Stokes role (a five or six) and occasional bowler. That being said, his ODI numbers are worse than Liam Livingstone, who basically fills the Moeen Ali gap as a frustrating number 7 and useful bowler.
