India Team Discussion

Harshal Patel was a one-IPL wonder kid, just like Asnodkar and Manpreet Gony.

In my opinion, we should have locked in Kartik Tyagi( who was traveling with the team last BGT), Umran Malik(dunno what happened there) and Kamlesh Nagarkoti(who seems to be perennially injured)

Where are all these reports of Virat the captain coming in from? For starters, his form is worse than Ajinkya Rahane's when the guy was dumped. Going back to Kohli will be a step in the backward direction. If they are to hand it over to a new person, let the new person establish his authority on the team and assert his personality. Kohli will simply mess up things. No wonder, media frenzy is surrounding Umesh Yadav as we speak- as some columns are calling for his return to the side.

India has a good 6 months before the next Test series. Considering the demi-God status that RS and VK enjoy, it might be difficult to drop them. However, the fact that a new WTC cycle will have begun by then, should be enough for Agarkar & Co. to employ the services of a new captain. The most probable options I see are as follows:

1. Jasprit Bumrah- difficult to ignore considering how he has led and the fact that the team seemed to gel more under him recently. The only concern being whether Bumrah can continue playing 3 formats+ IPL at the same. If the captain is going to require frequent breaks and isn't likely to bowl as much, this might be an impeding factor.

2. Shubman Gill- the Prince in waiting hasn't shown any maturity at all here. It will be difficult to entrust him with the Test captaincy. Gill could be tried out in the shorter formats before being handed over the responsibility of managing the team in the 5-day format.

3. KL Rahul- Lacks captaincy credentials and is often lost. The other thing being that KLR doesnt have a guaranteed spot in the line-up. Gautam and KL have worked together previously at LSG- but something tells me that KLR's consistency might be the bone of contention here.

4. Left-field Options: Rishab, Ruturaj, Shreyas, Pujara. While the other 2 arent a part of the team, they have domestic leadership credentials. They are supposedly in good knick and might come in as direct replacements for Rohit and Virat, if dropped. Pant doesnt come across as captaincy material and he disappointed me in his limited Daredevils outings as well. Jurel's rising stocks could see Pant getting sidelined here as well.

In the beginning of the thread I did advocate against going back to Kohli, but if they need a stop-gap filler, Pujara is the man they could target for a year and groom a leader under him. the batting is in doldrums and Pujara might just be the man to save the line-up
