Team Reviews
So these teams are going to be quite tricky to review. The ideal Test team contains 13 roles (7 batters, 1 keeper and 5 bowlers), and obviously that has to involve Panesars covering some of the roles. If you don't have Panesars of sufficient quality there are going to be roles...
This is definitely not worthy of its own thread, but Marlon Samuels' early career is genuinely baffling.
His first first-class century came in his 13th Test match, which was also his 29th first-class match, passing his previous best of 84 against Zimbabwe A in 2001. At that point in his career...
:nzf: :bat: Martin Donnelly (7 caps)
Martin Donnelly seldom played for New Zealand, because he was around in the era when the only way for a New Zealander to earn money playing cricket was for them to leave their home country behind and travel halfway round the world. He also didn't get to...
At what point do we start to talk about Ben Stokes the player?
He's obviously a massively important figure in this England team as its captain, but I can't really find a way to argue that he makes England's best six batters anymore, or that he particularly contributes with the ball anymore. I...
Same - shows what I know.
Well played Pakistan - batting first on the Day Six pitch was a huge advantage, but they pressed that advantge home and were very much the better team
I still posit that Ramiz Raja takes that prize for his tenure as an administrator (and also for his Babar puff piece/Kamran hit piece penned for release at stumps on day 1)
:eng: :ar: Stanley Jackson (20 caps)
Stanley Jackson was a dominant all-rounder at his best: in Test cricket his batting stood out as he finished with five centuries and an average of 48.79; in county cricket his bowling was the bigger factor as he took 774 first-class wickets at 20.37. The...
That would certainly be bold.
I do agree with the notion that it's hard to drop any of the top five - Pope is obviously the weakest of them, but still holds his place. I think that two pace + two spin + Rootalitharan ought to cover the bowling needs even if Stokes can't bowl though
That's a really interesting point.
I'd be surprised if Stokes was going to play a full bowling role, and realistically you want two seamers because of England's plan B of essentially modern day bodyline, so I think Atkinson and Carse are both as good as in
But there's a chance this Test...
It's all so deliciously tinpot isn't it
It'd be like if a team had their greatest pace bowler of all time and binned him off for a lad who averages 80 with the ball in domestic cricket and has zero stamina but is quite tall
