Story 2010/11 Vodafone Ashes Series- Adelaide Test begins!

Pathetic batting display from England. Foster and Broad might put on a 50 run partnership here, that's my feeling. But at the end of the day, it's all over for England.

Watson was amazing. The two wickets he took possibly just finished the things for the Englishmen.

Hey there, I've made that bowling scorecard. have a look at it and download the .psd at the end of the post.

Australia win the first Test match here in Brisbane

So England are 6 for 88 here in Brisbane, and the onslaught from the Australian bowlers is certainly not over. Nathan Hauritz was delivering the ball to Stuart Broad who was new at the crease, and a huge shout came from the fielders behind the stumps. It looked rather convincing, but the umpire shook his head and said not out. Captain and keeper had a little chat and decided to go up stairs and review the decision. Hawkeye showed the ball did not pitch in line with the stumps, and therefore a green light, mean's not out. Broad was safe, but the decision was nearly in favor for the Australian's. A close call, but the right one from the umpire.
The batsman needed 3 red lights to be out, as the ball was hitting in line and going on to hit the stumps, but the ball was pitched outside the line of the stumps.

After the LBW shout from the Australian fieldsman, there was a little mini run attack from the English batsman. Foster and Broad were the two men at the crease, and they started to pick things up a little bit here. James Foster made 88 runs in the first innings and he comes out here this afternoon just like he did in the first innings, smashing boundaries and picking up the quick runs. A beautiful square cut was the start of things, the ball came out of the middle of the bat and it just sounded superb.
A cover drive was the next wonderful shot that was played by Foster, a clean hit from the bat beat the fieldsmen in the covers and went to the boundary. But this is a little too late for the English batsman as they are still a country behind.

England pick up some late runs, but it's all a little too late

However just as soon as the English batsman looked to be getting a move on with the run rate, it was a wicket that slowed everything down. Stuart Broad was the batsman that lost his wicket. Dougy Bollinger was the bowler who finally picked up his first wicket of the second innings. Simon Katich was the catcher who had to travel about 10 meters forward to take the catch of Broad who guided the ball over the inner circle of fieldsman, but the ball was well hit in the air, it gave Katich time to run in and take the easy catch. Australia edge closer to winning this test match.

Bollinger get's his first wicket, being Broad

With the wicket of Stuart Broad now gone, in comes the second highest scorer from the English first innings in Monty Panesar. Panesar made a career high 42 in his first innings, and with Foster at the crease already who made 88 in the first innings, can they make sure they can get the total that they are heading for. You wouldn't think these 2 players would be the saviours for England, but they have done it once, there is no doubting they could do it again. Let's see what these 2 players could do for England who still need atleast 250+ to win this test match, but with 7 wickets down, they are certainly in trouble.

Monty Panesar comes to the crease with a lot of work to do

But Australia are just totally dominating in this match here this afternoon not letting any batsman, doesn't matter who they are, not letting them get away and make any runs. James Foster was the new batsman to be dismissed, with Ben Hilfenhaus taking his 4th wicket of the innings. Top class bowling from Hilfenhaus perfect length and a beautiful line and no batsman been able to get a hold of him. A huge edge from the bat of Foster which went flying, and went flying quickly to a number of slips, and it was Mitch Johnson who was able to take the catch above his head. Any higher and the ball would of went to the boundary. Foster goes for 28 and was settled, but it was the brilliant bowling by Hilfenhaus that was able to pick up Foster.

Foster goes before he get's settled. England 8 down now

With the fall of the wicket of James Foster, it is now down to the main bowlers to get the work done. Australia are really confident that they can win this test match, and with Ryan Sidebottom now coming to the crease, they will be looking to wrap this match out as quickly as possible. England's last chance is for Sidebottom and Anderson to guide Panesar through, but with the way that the Australian's are bowling, it is going to be a very difficult task to make.

Ryan Sidebottom walks out, but with a huge task

Although, Ryan Sidebottom only lasted the one ball and was gone for a duck. The Australian players and crowd, which is a massive crowd in at the moment, are going nuts here in Brisbane, as they can smell a victory within the next half an hour. Sidebottom goes for a duck. Ben Hilfenhaus get his 5th wicket of the innings and he has bowled sensationally well this afternoon. Another catch to Mitchell Johnson, but this one was 10 times better then the first. This catch will certainly feature in the classic catches at the end of the innings, as Johnson jumped and took a one handed blinder in the air.
Johnson went up with his right hand which is his non prefered catching hand, and was still able to grasp it nicely, Australia in a dominating position here, only now needing the one wicket.

Mitchell Johnson takes a blinder to dismiss Sidebottom

Jimmy Anderson was the new batsmen to the crease however, it was more about the last wicket for Australia, which was Monty Panesar. Australia have won this test match and it was the bowling of Shane Watson who took his third wicket that finished off this test match. Michael Clarke was the catchmen, and Australia have easily won this Test match here in Brisbane. Australia lead the series 1-0 now, and what a great test match we have seen. Australia led from the start and totaled a huge score in the first innings with just under 400. Ben Hilfenhaus finished the second innings with 5 wickets, while Shane Watson who isn't known for the big bowling innings, took 3 wickets and was a master bowler. Bollinger and Johnson took a wicket each, but the main focus was on Hilfenhaus who bowled brilliantly.

169 Australia bowled England out for, so that means that Australia win this test match by 238 runs, and go into the next test match will plenty of confidence. We have seen some wonderful individual performances, with Michael Hussey making 104 in the first innings and Andrew Flintoff taking 5 wickets for England. The second innings, Michael Clarke made 102 runs not out, and Monty Panesar took 4 wicket. The last innings, No batsmen made over 35 for England with Paul Collingwood making 34 and the next best was James Foster with 28. Ben Hilfenhaus took 5 wickets while Shane Watson chipped in with 3 for himself. Overall it was a splendid First Test match here in Brisbane, one that will go in the archieves. Some wonderful catches and some glorious strokes from the batsman.
So all in all here, Australia have won the first test match here in Brisbane by 238 runs.

Great win for the Aussies. Hilfy was brilliant with the bowl. A very poor batting performance from the English team in the second innings.

Good try at that hawk eye, Roo. It is not perfect but at least you tried something new and I am sure you can improve it. This tutorial might be useful for you. :)

Top win there from Australia, hard work paid off and England were nowhere in the match.
Hilfenhaus bowled really well there.

Match Review

What a great Test match we have just witnessed here over the last 4 days here in Brisbane. Australia have come out and taken away with a win in the first of 5 test matches against the England side, and they went on to win rather comfortably. Australia went on to win the test match by 238 runs, a very good start for their confidence going into the remainder of the tests, while England played well in patches, but will need to sit down and think about the upcoming tests to try and prove their performances.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, it was a hard pitch and a wonderful afternoon in Brisbane. Australia's openers got off to a good start with Katich and Watson both finding the bat in no time. All the Australian openers made a contribution, but everything was out classed by the 104 made by the left handed Michael Hussey. Hussey played a splendid innings off his own bat and gave Australia a huge lead of 398 in the first innings. Old timer, Andrew Flintoff came out and showed everyone why he was a certain starter in this match, taking 5 wickets of his own. Australia take a lead of 398 in the first innings and sending England in to bat.

England then came out and their openers couldn't do what the Australian openers could, and that was to put a partnership on the board. Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook both went early in the innings. The whole of the England top order failed to produce any type of score and they were looking in real trouble being 5/150 at one stage.
But it was the tail end that saved the England side from being behind majorly, with James Foster making a hard earned 88 and Monty Panesar, the very unorthodox batsman, making a handy 42 down the order, to boost England's total to 318 at the end of their first innings. A very high scoring match here in the first couple of days in Brisbane, Australia have a 78 run lead on the English going into the second innings, so things are fairly tight and even here.

Australia's second innings was just like their first, pretty much all of their batsman made starts at the top of the order. Good contributions from, Katich, Watson and Ponting, while we saw Michael Clarke make a unbeaten 102 to guide his team to a 7/329 total as Ricky Ponting knew he had to declare leading by 408 runs overall. But it all came down to how the Australian's would bowl on the second last day of the contest. Would the England batsman be able to get on top as the pitch was starting to deteriorate and break. But the story was with Ben Hilfenhaus in the last innings. A wonderful display of bowling from the fast bowler, took 5 wickets and ended the match for the Aussies, winning the contest by 238 runs. England struggled all of the second innings, being bowled out for 169, a very dissapointing display compared to their first innings total. Collingwood top scored with 34.

Here is your chance to vote and win some reputation points for your favorite classic catches moments in the first Vodafone test match in Brisbane. We sore some wonderful catches throughout the match, but we could only fit the 4 catches into our reel, so we hope we have picked the best 4. And here they are. Catch A was Michael Hussey, taking a wonderful left handed dive catch off the bowling from Nathan Hauritz. Catch B was Andrew Flintoff who again took a one handed dive catch jumping half onto the crease, and that was off the bowling of Monty Panesar on the 3rd day of play. Catch C was Simon Katich who took a very high ball catch standing at slip. Very difficult catch as he had to stretch with the ball travelling so quickly. And the last but no least catch D was Mitchell Johnson who again was standing in the slip position, and the edged ball was travelling quickly. Johnson jumped in the air and took a one handed screamer. So please vote for your favorite classic catch.
