Best Batsman
- Amla just beats clarke for me as his tons came in away games.
Best Youngster - No idea, I suppose only williamson, warner, mathews and pujara qualify. they all have faults but I'll just give it to Pujara for being one of the only highlights in india's poor year.
Most Improved Batsman - Marlon Samuels made the windies batting a two man show for the first time in years.
Best Innings - for me Amla's 196 in Perth Clarke had been resolute and proved nearly impossible for the south african bowlers to deal with but the sheer brutality of that knock broke australia's resolve to give south africa the series.
Failure of the year - Tendulkar has limped through a disasterous year, perhaps the seeds of which were sown in australia when he was playing like india's best batsman but failed to convert a big score. the form simply got worse from there and he's struggled to make any sort of contribution. However, Bell, his hundred at the end of the year is a distraction on what has been an awful year and in some ways his utter failure to cope with any spinning conditions under mined the efforts england were making to adapt, so he gets the nod.

Bowling Category
Best Bowler - He still has a match to go and Herath has been quietly romping throught the year.
Best Youngster - Finn's already made his mark so I'll just give it to Trent Boult.
Most Improved Bowler - Panesar looked a different bowler in india, so often a disappointment he finally began to deliver. But Roach, didn't have the staunchest opponents but took a step towards becoming the leader the west indies needs.
Best Innings - don't think much compares with the demolition job Rehman's 6/25 in abu dhabi wrecked against england. made a target of 145 looking monumentous and england fans worried about chasing anything similar all year such was the scarring it left.
Failure of the year - Narine looked unable to deliver on the hype, even against bangladesh, however, having destroyed the west indies ashwin should have been licking his lips at getting stuck into england at home, instead he became a weak link in a bowling attack that already looked seriously under strength.

Team Category
Best Team - South Africa
Most Improved Team - this is difficult, Australia are back on track, it took a very committed performance from the saffers to peg them back at the end of the year, while, england started as the no.1 and lost it to south africa but from another perspective they started the year being destroyed by spin and by the end had beaten india in a 4 match series on spinning pitches. so England. West indies desrve some credit too for the World T20 win and Bangladesh seemed to step into contention in ODIs with a good performance in the asia cup and beating the windies.
Decline of the year - India, with the "wait 'til you come to india." threat in tatters 2013 is all about rebuilding.

didn't do the others as I felt I was covering old ground.

Forgive me please short form advocates, but I'm doing my list based on Test cricket - the true and rightful king of cricket formats :p And yeah I've seen more of Australia than anyone else, so they'll be mentioned more...Stinky's also picked a few good ones that I support :thumbs

Batting Category
Best Batsman - Michael Clarke.
Best Youngster - Cheteshwar Pujara.
Most Improved Batsman - Marlon Samuels.
Best Innings - Dave Warner for his 180 vs India at Perth. Only 2 other guys in the Test made it past 50, yet Warner came out and pummelled the India pace quartet. 100 came off only 69 balls. Also liked Alastair Cook's 176 in first Test vs India when they were following on, probably best fighting innings of the year, even though India still won.
Failure of the year - Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman trio for India. Ricky Ponting's final series as well :(

Bowling Category
Best Bowler - Too hard. Either Ajmal or Herath, maybe Siddle. The SA pace trio were pretty good too.
Best Youngster - Kemar Roach. I liked what I saw from Trent Boult as well.
Most Improved Bowler - Monty! Tim Southee as well has bowled a lot better.
Best Innings - Hmm, probably Tim Southee's 7/64 vs India. Not often you see those kind of figures in India for a paceman and it was quality stuff.
Failure of the year - Imran Tahir: 0/180 off 23 overs vs Australia at Adelaide. And 0/80 off 14 in the 2nd innings too...also got a wicket off a no ball, as a spinner - triple fail! Rest of his year wasn't fantastic either.

All Rounder Category
Best All Rounder - Jacques Kallis - still the king.
Best All Round performance - Vernon Philander in that Test vs England where he made 60-odd and 30-odd with bat, and then took 5/30 to bowl out England in their 4th innings chase.

Team Category
Best Team - South Africa a smidge ahead of Australia and then England. England finished strong, but they lost 7 Tests this year. SA haven't lost a Test this year, but came very close in Australia.
Most Improved Team - SA and Eng haven't really improved, SL is treading water. Really has to be Australia or Pakistan. Maybe NZ if their pace bowling keeps improving. Need some batsmen though...
Decline of the year - India...
Rate your team (/10) with description (optional) - Australia 8/10. Think they've done well in their home series vs India and SA (better than I'd hoped - particularly vs India). Away vs WI wasn't so impressive, but they still won 2-0. We aren't doing too bad considering there aren't a lot of stars in the Aussie side anymore.

Misc
Best Tournament/Series - None really stood out. I like the Eng-Pak series from earlier in the year. Probably the Aus-SA series though, had some fast scoring and obvious quality in the batting and bowling.
Best match - The Aus-SA Test draw in Adelaide. Went down to the wire and featured a bit of everything: almost 500 runs in a day and then a 5th day of defensive batting
Most surprising/shocking incident - The Kevin Pietersen affair...what a farce.
Best Wicketkeeper - No idea! All seems pretty even to me. I've seen mistakes this year from just about all of them. Best batting keeper is still Prior, although when de Villiers gets his game together he'll probably get that crown.
Best Captain - Michael Clarke
Best moment for your team - First Test of the year, beating India by an innings at Sydney, 329 for Clarke and a 2-0 lead in the series.

Player of 2012 - Michael Clarke
Emerging Player of 2012 - Cheteshwar Pujara

Best Batsman - Michael Clarke
Best Youngster - Sunil Narine , the next Ajmal is on his way already , he already has a 5 wicket haul in tests
Most Improved Batsman - Virat Kohli
Best Innings - 300 from Amla against England
Failure of the year - Sachin Tendulkar , not much of runs . Without any runs he was bound not to get selected .

Rate your team (/10) with description (optional) - Pakistan (10/10) , Paksitan has improved a lot this year , they've proved that Pakistan can defeat any team whether they're stronger or weaker than them . Mohammad Hafeez has improved a lot , his bowling last year has been facinating as well as batting , Nasir Jamshed's batting has also improved and now he has the abillity to stay on the pitch for a long time . Saeed Ajmal's deliverys are now perfected and he can bowl doosra which is a very big threat for the batsmen especially the left handers . Junaid Khan is quite an interesting youngester and is very fun to watch as he picks 2-3 wickets in almost every match . Shoaib Malik's all round performance was absolutley brilliant . Kamran Akmal batted well in the t20 world cup but was one of the failure in odi's. Umar Akmal , another massive hitter of the bowl was marvelous , this was the best year in his life . Misbah Ul Haq lead Pakistan to victory a lot of times as he made fifties , the best thing I like in him is that he gives youngsters a chance to bat and he bats at the lower order but still he stays on pitch .
