That was some thrashing! 309 runs and biggest victory by runs, amazing! This is the reason I had Australia in my Top 4 before the start of the tournament. They are peaking at the right time and got the heavy losses out at the start of the tournament.

The margin of victory casts a nice safety net around NRR. This could very well help them seal their spot, as the likes of Eng, Pak, Srl and Afg would need to go all out to reverse the NRR here.

The order of the semi-finalists though would depend upon their remaining games.

Btw, why is this fellow back in Dhaka, in the middle of the World Cup? If it was so important to train under a particular mentor, might as well fly that person to India. Why leave the team and head home?

This is why you don't harp on Net Run Rate at the start of the tournament where you have 9 round robin league games. From -0.193, Australia move to +1.142 with just one game.

They (Australia) are peaking beautifully and at the very right time, just like how they are known to be doing. 2 defeats to India and South Africa, but then they have beaten Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Netherlands. Their last 2 games are against AFG and BAN. Cannot see a situation where Australia miss out on the semifinal spot. And once they make it there, they will be extremely dangerous at either Wankhede or Eden Gardens (surely Eden will help seamers and a true batting surface; same with Wankhede too).

ODI format is truly shaky right now. This WC has seen so many one-sided results, big thrashings and almost no thrillers. Its purely running this year on the nostalgia of being the premier World Cup of this sport since time immemorial. I doubt ODI World Cups will ever get played again in primetime cricket season (April - August) since IPL happens there followed by other franchise leagues.

I don't think the World Cup kept on throwing thrillers pre-T20. The ODI game was always designed in this manner. You see more thrashings due to the fact that there is a serious lack of skill for certain teams. It is the same in T20 as well, but just that the actual margins are smaller, given the lesser number of overs.

What I also do not get it the writers on Cricinfo trying to spell death knell for the World Cup- based on your exact thoughts. Lack of thrillers isnt a valid reason to cull the format. IMO, yes, it takes up a day, but individual boards need to rope in 'In-Ground Managers' who can help them design better experiences at stadiums. I guess the population is so used to T20 that they forget the value of the ODI. The slightly longer game actually gives a chance to teams to design a comeback.

As for your last point:
2027- Feb March (South Africa)
2031- Feb March (India)

If the World Cup is held in England, it will be conducted in June. If in Australia/ NZ, it will be either held in Dec-Jan /Jan-Feb

What a subtle way to say @SaiSrini simply copy pasted the article from cricinfo. Or he wrote that too.. :p
It's always nice to quote sources if you share something....

Now, I'm enjoying this WC. Not just bcz I love watching PAK lose and I'm Indian (pun intended) ;), but it's a fresh bit of pure cricket in the era of glorified mini formats and leauges. It's doing a lot of good for low tier teams to lift their games. It's a format where you need skill, application and patience. Speaking about one-sided games, financially It's bad for sure and looking at the business side, this format might go away to oblivion.

The only way it can be saved is by more balanced FTP program from ICC. You don't need 5 or 7 t20 matches series in bilaterals. 3 should be enough. Associates should play more ODI serieses. League cricket will stay so we need to find way in co existence. I love how WTC is getting played. They tried the same by introducing ODI championship and Qualifiers and it can sustain if individual cricket boards keep a check on players and their League contracts. Boards like PAK, SL, WI and BAN especially. Although IPL potentially robbed us two WTC titles but I admire how BCCI has kept players from playing other leagues. Other boards should be in that same boat. I've mentioned earlier about balance from ICC, that includes financial disbursement as well. BCCI is the main influencer now but this has to be stopped. All boards should have enough cash with a strong Audit team for accountability. We can go on really, however this type of WC is fascinating. I keep on saying 2003 format is what an ideal ODI WC format should be. But even in this WC, loved how AFG improved their game and scripted a comeback story, how AUS from the brink of elimination, coming back to such a form which we all fear and respect, how a t20 mindset robbed WI from featuring in WC and an improved, hungry NED came to big arena and honing their skill while toppling a Side like SA after two close loss against PAK and NZ. How PAK is struggling with same T20 mindset... this WC has everything. I sincerely feel we should celebrate and focus on the betterment and not finding errors and justify why we should kill the format and live with absolute bullocks of shortest format and push the real core cricket to extinction.
