Even if he was tactically great or an excellent motivator of men, Cummins makes little sense as the captain since his own place in the side should never be secure. He’s competing against an ATG pacer, a world class pacer who used to be number one in this format and a potential second spinner in Indian conditions. The fact that they’ve not selected a second frontline spinner or even a spin bowling all-rounder is because they knew it would raise further questions of Cummins’ place in the XI.
