Probably because the 'old' guy is scoring more runs. I don't consider 32 old either. David Hussey's scored runs consistently over the last few years. Ferguson's had 1 good season. Dussey's averaging 80 in the County Championship this year, and is a proven class player. I don't think you should be picking young players just for the sake of having a youngster in there. You then start to fall into the English trap of constantly working towards the future.
Hodge is 34, has a Test double hundred and is still scoring runs in Australia. Averaged over 60 last year, with a double hundred to his name. He's still a class act, irrespective of his age, and I'd back him to score more runs than Ferguson.
Collingwood's dropped 3 now, yet Trott's still not in there. Best slip fielder in CC according to Nick Knight and yet Collingwood's at slip. Ridiculous.
Meh, stats whore or not. I consider scoring runs quite important when picking a batsman to play Test cricket. Being young shouldn't bump him up the pecking order ahead of 2 guys that have been scoring big runs for years. Hardly whoring stats, just a sensible way of backing up an argument.
