Tottenham were punished for a host of missed chances as Manchester City clung on to start the week with a win.

Tottenham's Darren Bent missed two one-on-ones with City keeper Shay Given and a Roman Pavlyuchenko shot hit the post before City took the lead. Jonathan Woodgate conceded a penalty for a foul on Rafael Van der Vaart and tireless Robinho smashed in the spot-kick.

The game had got off to a fractious start before settling down with both teams spurning good chances. Bent was Tottenham's main culprit with the English striker showing his trademark pace and predatory instinct but lacking in his execution.

He was clean through after latching on to Luka Modric's lofted ball after 14 minutes only to see keeper Given save with his leg. Tottenham keeper Gomes gave his side a scare at the other end when his goal-kick struck Diego Ribas before rebounding back into his grateful arms.

Wright-Phillips side-footed agonisingly wide and Diego saw a header saved low down by a scrambling Gomes as the home side threatened despite Tottenham's domination. The visitors have frequently been accused of failing to apply an end product to their play and they showed why as the half wore on.

Bent angled a drive wide, was twice let down by his poor touch in threatening positions and saw another effort saved by Given as they strained to break the deadlock. Pavlyuchenko's snapshot beat Given but hit the post before Tottenham paid the price for their profligacy.

A cross-field ball caught out center-back Woodgate, who conceded a penalty for a foul on Van der Vaart, and Robinho dispatched the spot-kick in off the crossbar. City had the woodwork to thank again when Spurs defender Vedran Corluka's header came back off the crossbar, while Pavlyuchenko reacted angrily to not being given for a perceived push by Richard Dunne.

The home side could even have extended their lead on the stroke of half-time if Diego had been more clinical with a poked shot hit straight at Gomes. Tottenham continued to pass and probe after the break and Pavlyuchenko dragged a shot across goal and wide just after the hour mark as City battled to hold on to their lead.

The home crowd were giving their side plenty of encouragement while Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp threw on striker Jermain Defoe. Defoe has many a times come on to engineer late goals for his side but could not do it again as City got their win and bagged all three points.

Great victory over Spurs even if it was by just the one goal. Spurs can be quite a tricky side to beat on a good day.

Two good teams there, but Man City deserved the victory for definite, judging by the team lineups. Didn't seem to go all that way with Tottenham losing the match, rather than Man City winning it. A godo win though.

Great presentation and writing, Shan.

A goal on the stroke of half-time from Stephen Ireland was enough to give Manchester City all three points at the Reebok.

The Republic of Ireland international leapt the highest to direct Elano's corner past keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and give the Citizens a deserved lead. Jaaskelainen denied Man City on several occasions, making fantastic saves from Robinho, Elano and ?30m-man Diego.

Bolton's Johan Elmander went close with a shot saved low by Shay Given. The home side's other efforts were nothing more than half-chances. Matthew Taylor, who looked a little sluggish at times, could have given Gary Megson's men an early lead, but headed over from six yards.

Jay DeMerit tried his luck with a 20-yarder which went two yards wide, while Elmander also made Given palm over with a testing delivery. Man City, on the other hand, grew in strength as the match wore on. They have this uncanny knack of slowly turning the screw against teams they play, while at the same time not appearing too threatening.

Bolton edged the midfield battle in the first half but always looked liable to concede whenever Frank Rijkaard's side came within 25 yards of their goal. And Man City certainly had their shooting boots on at the Reebok.

If it was not for the brilliance of goalkeeper Jaaskelainen then the scoreline would have very embarrassing for the Trotters. The Finn made two splendid saves from Brazilian striker Robinho, showing strong hands to punch away a free-kick and two fierce strikes, while he also saved three stinging efforts from Elano.

But despite Jaaskelainen's heroics, Man City's juggernaut managed to breach the final line of defence as the interval approached. Elano's swinging corner from the left was met and converted by the head of Stephen Ireland, who found a part of the goal Jaaskelainen could not reach.

Although the Bolton ace was beaten, he was not down, and produced the finest moment of the feisty affair when he tipped over a stunning 25-yard shot from Diego. By this time the man-of-the-match award was all but his. And from Bolton's final corner he tried to put the icing on the cake by becoming a goalscoring hero, but alas, there was no fairytale ending for the Finn.

Three second-half goals saw Man Utd take their place in the sixth round of the FA Cup with victory over city rivals Man City.

Striker Wayne Rooney put the home side in front two minutes after the interval before the Argentine striker Carlos Tevez tapped the ball into the net. Elano pulled a goal back for the host on 53 minutes when he fired past a flapping Edwin Van Der Sar. But Rooney netted his second on 83 minutes after keeper Joe Hart parried his first shot inside the box.

Although the Red Devils were made to sweat after Elano's goal, Man City were outplayed by their Premier League and city rivals for most of the game. The Citizens had Hart to thank for maintaining parity at half time as he produced to deny Man Utd an opener.

The best of the lot was a superb reaction save to deny Cristiano Ronaldo on 15 minutes after excellent work from the industrious Michael Carrick. City's best chance in the first 45 minutes fell to Pablo Zabaleta, whose clever chip was tipped over the bar by Van der Sar.

United's injury problems were further increased when Evra limped off with an injury 10 minutes before the break, with substitute Wes Brown slotting in at left-back. But the Red Devils took the lead in the first minute after the restart when Rooney rose unmarked to head Ryan Giggs' corner past Hart.

The Englishman turned provider three minutes later when he squared the ball for Carlos Tevez, and Tevez just had to tap-in past the City keeper Joe Hart on far side. Elano cut Man Utd's celebrations short on 53 minutes when he fired past Van der Sar, who failed to deal with Robinho's free-kick.

But the setback did not hinder Man Utd for long and they continued to push forward, with Rooney looking particularly menacing. The 22-year-old added his second seven minutes from time after fine work from Giggs on the break.
