On a bowler's paradise, Niuean openers batted aggressively against a formidable new ball attack to amass an impressive powerplay total. As a result of which, Vanuatu were put on the back foot early on, but a cataclysmic 8th-over resulted in Niue losing 3 wickets for chump change, essentially. When it felt like Niue had squandered their start, out walked Jayson Okesene, who smashed Vanuatu's bowlers all around Old Trafford to blaze his way to 44 from just 20 deliveries. Incredible from Vanuatu! They've pulled off one of the most spectacular run-chases you will ever see! Perhaps, the greatest moment in Vanuatu cricket history!

After being reduced to 8/2 in the third over, courtesy of a rampaging Talaititama Holo, Vanuatu made a superb comeback on the back of an 84-run stand between Clement Lal and Apolinaire Saksak. Their partnership resuscitated Vanuatu's innings and brought them back from the dead. Although match-saving, their partnership did not put Vanuatu on a winning track as it was far too conservative given the task ahead of them. Clement Lal scored 48 runs off just as many deliveries before being dismissed, and Apolinaire Saksak scored even slower compared to his counterpart.

With 62 runs required off the last 24 deliveries, Apolinaire Saksak and Luuk Kalotang picked up the pace considerably, and whacked Daniel Emani and Dalton Nemani for 37 runs off the next 12 deliveries. But with the required equation still pretty steep, Vanuatu couldn't afford to take their pedal of the gas, which meant Niue could cash in on Vanuatu's desperation. Which they did in the penultimate over when Luuk Kalotang missed a straighter delivery and was caught plumb for an lbw dismissal. Despite the loss of wicket, Vanuatu managed 12 runs off the over. They now needed 13 runs off the final 6 deliveries.

Daniel Emani, entrusted to bowl the final over despite going for 17 in his first, conceded a four and a six on the second and third deliveries of the 20th. Coupled with the batters scurrying for a double on the first ball, the game was already lost. Tim Donald had smoked Daniel Emani for the most valuable cameo you are ever likely to see, as a single on the fourth delivery sealed for Vanuatu, the Gold Medal in cricket at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
